For that you'll need to look at the documentation that comes with the 
device, but most modern switches and (afaik) hubs do have autosensing 
uplink ports. If they're not, you'll need a crossover cable to string 
between the floors.

  On my Linksys Etherfast 5-port switch right here on my desk, I use a 
regular cable...the uplink port is autosensing.

(Now if you want to go really crazy, use these in the walls:
