When I say that I have run out of free memory, you can believe me.

It has become common practice for me to run MacOSPurge after quitting almost
every program to make sure I'm not wasting any memory. Insofar as the
number of open programs and files, I run with a typical system folder,
nothing wild, and perhaps a dozen open apps, give-or-take.

Have you used any memory- and processor-intensive programs, such as Maya or
Lightwave? EIA? With LOTS and LOTS of polygons? Particles and fog
effects? If so, you understand that my original assertion is correct: you
can't have too much memory, especially if you used multiple apps that crave
memory like 3-D does. If they recommend a min of 256 megs, they're more
comfortable with twice that. Serious gamers are cognizant of this as well.

For a more typical user (the 99.44% that you mentioned?) that normally face
the likes of Word, IE, and a game of solitare, sure; 128 megs will suffice.
