     It's unfortunate that it's an 8500 and so difficult to mess around 
in but it sounds like the voodoo I had with my 8500 except mine would not 
reboot either - turned out to be just bad connections - processor not 
happily seated and a bad cache.
     I eventually got it sorted by bareboning the hardware - one stick of 
ram and no cache no pci cards no cd and holding the cuda for thirty 
seconds or more and zapping the pram before the chimes end (does 
something to the vram - Jeff Walther can elucidate) - then adding it back 
bit by bit until I hit a problem. Handy to have the original processor 
for a second opinion.
     Mine still has a problem that I haven't tackled yet - it thinks 
there's a tv as well as a monitor connected to it - tried dragging them 
together in the control panel but nothing. Mind you the AV panel is 
missing.....I must get one of those.
