Many, many thanks to Hal for helping with that. He
came across an article about the 5200 and how it does not support a
modem more than 9600 baud.
WHOA Nellie !
That's not true at all. A 5200 is perfectly capable of using
a V.9* modem. I've got a 5215 sitting right here and I've connected
all sorts of modems to it--rockwell, bestdata, globalvillage, And it
browses ok for a dialup.
The problem with these computers is that they came with an
internal modem. I believe most of those were 14.4 (check out
everymac). But in any case, until you rip that baby out you can't
do anything because it preempts the modem port and does some other
stuff that is not good for your communications.
Then get a modem and figure out what kind of modem it is and
what initialization strings it uses. Most people (like me) can
hardly remember initialization strings and how they used to work (and
not work). Plug in a modem, Go into your modem control panel and get
as close as you can to the style of modem you have. Get some simple
communications software (eg ZTerm), put it in TTY mode and type in:
"AT" and hit return. If it goes to the next line you're OK. Then
you have to choose the intialization string that works for your modem.
I haven't been following this thread, but the basic
troubleshooting for this is to find out if the modem works (sometimes
they stop working even though the light keep lighting). Then you
have to go through all of the old TCPIP stuff with the old system
software and so forth (which you don't have to do with OS9). This
is all really involved. You might look up this stuff on the
"internet starter kit" page. That was the best book ever written
about this stuff and Adam Engst has a lot of it on line.
