You are completely right. As I said, you can browse at 56k with a new modem
keeping your original logic board (given that you have pulled out your slow
modem card from the logic board, SORRY JOHN, I FORGOT TO SAY THIS).

It is just that the last versions of Opera, Explorer or Netscape won't run
very fast in a 5200 (even if you are not connected!)
You can always use old versions of Netscape or text-based browsers, but you
won't get far with them. If you are about to buy a new modem, perhaps it is
not a bad idea to plug it to a better logic board.
