Currently I have a Linksys wireless access point hooked up to my cable modem. I have my PC and a B&W G3 (not mine <g>) connected via cat5 and an old intel laptop (trying to find a nice flavor of linux for that old beast) that I currently (try to) connect via a Linksys PCMCIA card.
While I'm working on my PM8500, I have it wired to the router via ethernet cable, but someday soon I'd like to put this downstairs and would like to use wireless access to connect to the network. So, I already have the router/hub (linksys) and a PCMCIA card (another linksys but "for the pc") for 802.11b ... and my question is, is there an inexpensive way to get the 8500 equipped with wireless? Can I use my linksys 802.11b pc-card in some kind of adaptor in one of the PCI slots? If so, what kind of adapters are compatible? Can I save money by buying a PC version of a mac-compatible card and flashing it? Do I need to go with "airport" branded devices only? I mean, if PCI is a standard and 802.11b is a standard protocol...you see where my newbie confusion comes from? I am currently running OS8.6 on my 8500. If this would be way easier with an OS upgrade, I'm willing, but it will be a while before I can afford all the goodies that would make OSX a possibility, so I am looking for OS8/9x solutions only.
