Dan,

On the surface, it might seem better to wait, but I don't agree. 802.11g
looks promising, but I get the same internet speeds (around 2 Mb/sec -
Cablemodem) as direct connection to the cablemodem, so 11 Mb/sec is fast
enough. Also, people will be dumping the 802.11b stuff for the g stuff, and
used b stuff will be cheaper. In my case, I already had b stuff, and actually
like that they are all the same. The other aspect is that I don't believe OS9
drivers are likely to be written for g stuff. Now, if I was planning on going
all OSX, then I'd probably get all g stuff. Oh, and universal drivers don't
work with PC Cards and PCI adapters in OS9. If they did, I would have kept
the Orinoco Silver card and the Hyperlink PCI adapter that I had.

Proxim bought up Skyline a while back. I see the kit (Card and adapter) at
Frys Electronics, routinely for $179. As far as I know, there are only 3 or
four that work. Skyline, MacWireless (who coincidentally originally wrote the
drivers for the Skyline), MacSense (I think) and I've heard that Cisco does
too. This applies to OS9. With OSX, that may be different. If you want a
better price, and feel comfortable with eBay, then do that, or join the Mac
Swap list.

IMO, the longer you delay making a decision wrt wireless, the better.

There are two major factors at work:

1) Mac vs PC cards, which is (mostly) technically just the lack of
drivers for Mac OS 9 and X. This is being addressed: There are
developers working on "universal" drivers; it's mostly just a matter
of time. eg: IOXperts.

2) The wireless market is changing fast. 802.11a, .11b, .11g, and
the newer revisions of 11g (it isn't a finalized standard yet),
interoperability issues, distance/speed issues, etc.

Item (2) is the critical one. Several companies soon to release
better chip sets. As they begin to ship in volume, the price of
interface cards (pci and pcmcia) will drop...

FWIW,
- Dan. >>
