Acrobat 6 has now a complete JavaScript object to control the printing parameters. I have not seen any restrictions on Reader for the page handling options. You also have the shrinkToFit argument in the print command, which has been introduced with Acrobat 5, and which gives you control too.

Have a closer look at these two places (print() Doc Object, as well as printParams Object).

As much as I complain about Adobe's factory defaults, in this case they are definitely right to set the shrinking option, because that is what the unexpecting user will expect <g> ... that what the user sees on screen will get printed.

There is also the comment about architectural drawings... It might be USAn practice, but it is definitely bad practice to rely on a drawing only for critical measurements. A drawing must always be dimensioned ... and only the indicated dimensions are valid numbers; everything measured from the paper is "for information only"...

Hope, this can help.

We need to do this, too, and we've been trying to find a way to do it for
several years. Our Web-based ASP application (www.ReplyMailOnLine.com)
generates PDF documents that contain U.S. Postal Service bar codes and other
graphics that MUST be printed at 100% scale. Many versions of Adobe Acrobat
and Adobe Acrobat Reader/Adobe Reader are set for "Fit to page" by default,
and this causes tons of problems for us.

I know that we could do some things with JavaScript that would address this,
but the JavaScript-based solutions would not work with Reader, which is what
most of our customers use.

I've had several discussions with Adobe's technical people about this, and
I've also suggested that Adobe stop enabling "Fit to page" by default in
future product releases.

The last time I talked about this with a technical person at Adobe, I was
told, "It's always better to print a document at the largest size that will
fit on the page." I then explained to him why it is NOT always better. :)

Is there any way within PDF to specify that a PDF should not be printed
with shrink to fit or any scaling? This is required for architectural
drawings in PDF, as measurements taken from scaled printed output could
be disastrous(!).

I don't think that this is possible without a plug-in being required on
the end user's computer. Job tickets, for example, cannot force this
(can they by requiring a certain paper size?), and of course job tickets
would not apply when printed to a standard printer as far as I know.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
