I doubt I'd ever use it wide-open on portraits.

In fact, just about the only time I use any lens wide-open is when I absolutely have to have the shutter speed, or am just tinkering to see how shallow a DOF I can get. Generally, I shoot my F50/1.7 at f/2.8 or higher. I tend to like a lot of sharpness in my portraits for catch lights and fine hair detail, and just smooth out any skin imperfections in post.

The shots at the flickriver link Darren sent seemed to have pretty nice, smooth bokeh at f/5 -- which is likely where I'd tend to use it most often.

And now, I'm once again filled with envy and resentment.

Its an amazing lens. My copy is pretty beat up, but I wouldn't part
with it for anything. In fact I want to fix it up. I think even my
"awful" takumar 70-210 is a better lens for portraits. in fact I think
its kind of a sleeper.

It does not. This lens has a slight flare at the end to accommodate

Does it have the built-in retractable hood?

If I weren't up to my eyeballs in trying to get something resembling a

Strikes me as a potentially excellent portrait lens. [Grumble.]

I've got a few items that need to find new homes. Actual shipping will
need to be added to the prices below. I'll be happy to ship WORLDWIDE
to pdml members.

Firstly,
I've got a nice working LX body (the later version that goes to 3200
ASA). It's main apology is a dimple dent to the right of the film
advance lever (top side, towards the rear). Doesn't seem to have
affected anything, just a cosmetic boo-boo (and one that isn't seen
from the subject's side)... $195

Next,
I have a minty looking Super Takumar 35mm f/2 (yep, 2.0), It comes
with original caps, and new looking case. It also comes with the
matching Takumar metal hood which comes in it's own new looking case.
This lens has the thorium element and I haven't given it UV treatment
yet, so may require color temp. correction in post. Cosmetically this
kit looks new, except that the previous owner decided to scratch out
the word Takumar on the hood and front ring. (I KNOW!).....$189

Next,
Hard to find, SMC K 35mm f2.0 with original caps & hard case (third
party) ... $339

$89

Pentax-A 35-105mm macro (the famous stack of
primes)...............$149
