SU's relationship did not have any profit motive although the rupee-ruble
exchange (despite the rupee's overvaluation) was not the best for India.
However, buying capital equipment with tea was a deal that India could not
afford to give up. So who was gaining at whose expense remains somewhat murky
in this relationship. Cold War dynamics had more to do with this and newly
independent India did want to pursue some independence, which it did by allying
itself with the SU and EE, although India also played the US card once in a
while.
