Dia is very cool.  You might want to look into GraphViz
(http://www.graphviz.org, and link to AT&T site)  It's
amazingly simple to use, and quite powerful.

Please, no!  Powerpoint is one of the few formats which
cannot be easily read on a non Windows or Mac system.  Any
raster graphics format, or PDF.  Or all of the above.
