South By Southwest Film Conference and Festival is shaping up to be one
of the best film festivals in the country. In fact, it is one of the top
nine film festivals in the world according to Film Threat Magazine. To
live up to that high praise, March 12-20 at theaters all over central
Austin, SXSW will present some of the best new independent films from the
United States and around the world. Narrative features include the U.S.
premiere of Desert Blue, a new film by Morgan J. Freeman (attending)
starring Brendon Sexton III (attending), Christina Ricci (attending) and
Casey Affleck (attending); The Book of Stars, directed by Michael Miner
(attending), starring Mary Stuart Masterson (attending); EDtv directed by
Ron Howard (attending), starring Matthew McConaughey (attending), Jenna
Elfman, Woody Harrelson and Jon Bon Jovi (attending); world premiere
Abilene directed by Joe Camp III, starring Ernest Borgnine (attending)
and Kim Hunter; and A Slipping Down Life, directed by Toni Kalem
(attending) from the story by Anne Tyler, starring Lili Taylor and Guy
Pearce. There will also be a Nick Broomfield Retrospective and a special
tribute to Jack Hill hosted by Quentin Tarantino.
The documentaries being presented this year include Wadd: The Life and
Times of John C. Holmes directed by Cass Paley (attending), Hill Stomp
Hollar directed by Bradley Beesley (attending), The Accident directed by
Joseph Lovett (attending), The Living Museum directed by Jessica Yu and
American Chain Gang directed by Xackery Irving (attending).
This year's confirmed panelists at the conference include Nick Broomfield
(Kurt & Courtney), Paul Steckler (Vote For Me), Rana Joy Glickman (God
Said "Ha"), Robert Rodriguez (The Faculty), Guillermo del Toro (Chronos),
Harry Knowles (Ain't It Cool News), Emanuel Levy (Variety), Caroline
Kaplan (Bravo/IFC), Lisa Heller (POV), Morgan J. Freeman (Desert Blue),
Richard Linklater (The Newton Boys) and Tony Safford (Twentieth Century
Fox) on panels such as Documenting Real Life, Making Your Script
Shootable, Digital Filmmaking and New Money Sources. In addition to
panels, the SXSW Film Conference will host "Conversations With", which
will spotlight a discussion with noted directors, screenwriters or
actors; workshops on everything from lighting to new camera equipment,
mini-meetings and one-on-one mentoring sessions. The three day trade show
offers not only film related booths but also a large new media section.
Film Festival Passes will be $45 (includes tax and service charge) and
will be available at Waterloo Records while they last and at
participating theatres on Friday, March 12. Conference registrations are
$245.
