Al I have seen similar odd behavior due to the anti-virus programs. Have the folder put in the exclusions as well as dbf, cdx, and fpt extensions. That helps some, not always. There have been times the only way to "fix" the odd behavior was to remove that particular anti-virus. We proved it was the anti-virus with a sysinternals tool.
