There were conflicting reports about the aid worker's nationality. The British Foreign Office identified the woman as a British citizen named Gayle Williams. The Afghan Interior Ministry said she was South African. The South African Department of Foreign Affairs said it was trying to confirm the report. The country does not have a presence in Afghanistan and was working through its mission in Islamabad, Pakistan. The woman worked for SERVE (Serving Emergency Relief and Vocational Enterprise), an inter-denominational Christian charity that helps the disabled, Interior Ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary. She was shot in the western part of the city, Bashary said. SERVE says it employs 23 expatriates and 450 Afghans in the country. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the death, saying on its Web site that it killed the "foreign woman" for preaching Christianity in the country. The Taliban added that its members had been following the woman for some time. In August, aid groups in Afghanistan said in a report that attacks on aid workers have forced them to scale back relief work. That same month, a Japanese aid worker was found dead after assailants abducted him in east-central Afghanistan. In a separate incident, gunmen fired on a vehicle belonging to the New York-based International Rescue Committee. Four aid workers died in that attack. The NATO-led coalition said Monday it had killed more than 20 insurgents during two days of fighting in Wardak province. Soldiers with the International Security Assistance Force conducted an air assault in the province's Jalrez district, located west of Kabul. The soldiers were attacked with small-arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades and rockets, the NATO-led force said in a statement. No NATO troops were slain in the fighting, the statement said.
