If you look at Kepler (http://kepler-project.org), which extends the excellent Ptolemy platform, you'll see that we added a fast search option to the left pane which makes finding actors much more efficient. It is based on multiple ontological classifications of the actors, so there can be many ways to locate a given actor (e.g., searching for 'display gives back both the 'Display' actor and more interestingly the XYPlot actor, among others.

Perhaps instead of a list you could provide a table that showed various
attributes of the items and allowed sorting by clicking column headers
to make it easier to find a particular item.
