Webb: Take a look at the textplot function that lives inside Greg Warnes "gregmisc" package. Note however, that textplot makes a call to graph.new() when called, so it will not superimpose text upon an existing graph, but will place text (and some tables) into empty graphic devices (solved by your use of mfrow).
