Update.packages() updates the versions of the packages, not of > R: why did you think otherwise?
I understand now that my mistake was to force the installer of the binaries under win xp to use always the same directory to install the different versions of the programme, that is d:\programmi\R, without any reference to the version itself. This causes kind of of a sedimentation of obsolete stuff. Thanks for the answer.
