Just want to let everyone know that my family and I (including our new
daughter Eleanor, born 8/29/2001) are alive and well. We don't yet know of
anyone we know having been killed, but we do know people who live and work
in the World Trade Center area and it's likely that will change.
At the time of the first crash I was still uptown in Harlem (where we live).
At the time of the second crash I was on the subway heading downtown and
when I emerged I heard that the Pentagon had been hit as well. I spent
several hours in an office in midtown which had a clear view of the north
tower, and a number of people saw it fall. The office I was in belongs to a
large accounting firm (they are an R:Base customer) and they had clients of
their own in the World Trade Center.
Our neighborhood is relatively unaffected, being upwind of the scene, but
our old neighborhood in Brooklyn is covered in ash from the burning
buildings. It's difficult to consider the constituent elements of that ash.
In addition to what is said to be thousands of civilians (and it's hard to
imagine how it can be fewer than ten thousand) we have lost several hundred
firefighters and many policemen. We lost many of the top commanders of the
fire department, apparently 10 minutes after the Mayor and Police and Fire
Commisioners had left their location.
Thank you to all the folks from overseas who have expressed their support.
The radio is reporting a severe shortage of blood in the city, and anyone
who is in the US and can give blood that will reach the city could help by
doing so.
