Apropos of this, something I do at the beginning of every application now
is:

SET DEBUG OFF
SET MESSAGES OFF
SET ERROR MESSAGES OFF

DEBUG SET DEBUG ON
DEBUG SET MESSAGES ON
DEBUG SET ERROR MESSAGES ON

This way, when I run my application with DEBUG ON I get to see all the
messages.  When the user runs it with DEBUG OFF, they don't see messages.
