Stan,
I tried some experiments and confirm your results (truncation to 28
characters when you ATTACH a db4 file in R:BASE).  You ought to report it to
RDCC.  I also found the following work-around:  In Excel, for each column
containing a cell wider than 28 characters, make the column heading as wide
as the widest cell.  Be sure to maximize all column widths.  Then do the
"save as db4" procedure and ATTACH in R:BASE.  You will find that the column
headings will get truncated to 10 characters, but your data will be intact.
