Mike, I think it depends on the method you use
to connect. If you use DAO, you're likely to get
very negative results. ADO and RDO are better
than DAO. What I do is even faster. I use the
Windows API. My DLL is 380K whereas ADO
is somewhere around 10 MB. You've got to figure
there's bound to be some serious overhead there.

So when I deploy, I only have the 380K file, not
the 10MB worth of fat in ADO. Another advantage.

I have found the connections to be very fast and
very reliable. I've been very pleased with the
results I've gotten.

The old 5.1 ODBC driver wasn't a good choice
since it wouldn't allow multiple instances of itself
but it would let you at 4.5++ databases, 5.1, 5.5
etc...

The 6.0 ODBC driver was great. It would allow
CREATE TABLE statements and such and would
do just about anything a person would want to do.
It's fast and stable but there may be some features
of modern day R:BASE that it won't support.

The 6.1 driver was read only and just before
Microrim/Abacus went under, they had fixed that
problem. The driver was available for only a few
hours before the web site went down for the last
time. RBTI then released a 6.1a ODBC driver
with the R/W fix.

The 6.5 driver is perfectly good but it won't allow
CREATE TABLE statements. It is R/W and will
do most of what a person might want to do.

I own several copies of Oterro and I found it to add
complications such as sys_row_ver and it's a little
more picky about the CFG file etc... Oterro will
allow you to do CREATE TABLE statements and
pretty much whatever a person might want to do.

The latest copies of Oterro would also support all
of the newer enhancements to triggers and stored
procedures etc... Your more current ODBC
drivers will also allow you more flexibility in terms
of using the MS ODBC manager. Older ODBC
versions require you to make registry entries in
order to use them.
