Countdown to 1999 National NAIDOC Art Award

Entries close 17 May

Time is running out for submitting entries to the 1999 National NAIDOC Art
Award but it appears that there will be a record number of entries, the
ATSIC Chairman, Gatjil Djerrkura, said today.

"Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists are invited to submit their
works for the 1999 National NAIDOC Art Award," Mr Djerrkura said.

"The winning artwork will feature in the poster promoting the 1999 NAIDOC
Week. It will play a prominent part in encouraging better understanding of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture."

This year, the national NAIDOC Week will run from Sunday 4 July to Sunday 11
July. The national focus for NAIDOC Week activities will be Alice Springs,
including the National NAIDOC Ball and the National NAIDOC Awards presented
to Indigenous achievers. Some communities may set aside another week for
their own, local events.

Throughout the country, Indigenous Australians come together annually to
celebrate their survival and the continuation of their culture. All
Australians are invited to join in the NAIDOC celebrations.

"The NAIDOC theme for 1999 is 'Respect' - respect for elders, respect for
culture, respect for land, respect for the rights of indigenous
Australians," Mr Djerrkura said.

"This is highly appropriate, as this year's celebrations correspond with the
International Year of the Older Person and the end of the International
Decade of the World's Indigenous People."

The National NAIDOC Art Award provides a showcase for Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander artists - whether from the remote regions of northern and
central Australia or from rural and urban centres.

Artists must incorporate this year's theme into the work. The Award has a
prize of $5,000 and the winning entry becomes the National NAIDOC poster.

Entries for the Art Award must be accompanied by a signed, completed entry
form available from the Office of Public Affairs, Canberra (phone 02 6289
3020).

Entries for the art competition close on 17 May 1999.
