Interesting, the brucellosis issue. Brucellosis was a major issue in the
NT a few years back, and resulted in herds of cattle belonging to various
indigenous cattle station owning groups in the Territory being destroyed.
Initially , at least, these people found it very difficult to replace the
herds and the question became linked to the "failure" of indigenous people
to "properly" manage cattle properties etc. I gather that brucellosis is
pretty well endemic in the cattle industry in most parts of the world.
There were certainly suggestions that the issue was prosecuted much more
stringently when Aboriginal stations were involved. Whether this is true of
not I do not know.

Cattle of course, do a huge amount of damage to land in arid regions
particularly, and no doubt bison would do the same, (probably no more and
no less in reality than the big cattle that are grown in the NT and feed
the American hamburger market!) but gee they are wonderful looking animals.

I agree with Trudy that Australia isn't the answer for them, but perhaps we
could think about trying to provide some support for the people that they
really belong to - the indigenous people of North America.

Cheers

Rod
