It's not so much that isolators cause intermod.  They generate 
harmonics.  For this reason, an isolator is always followed by a 
bandpass or low pass filter in commercial applications where good 
engineering practice is followed.

It says: "Weak harmonics of the input signal frequency to an isolator 
can be found at the output of the device. This phenomena is thought to 
be the result of minor impurities in the ferrite material."
