gnuplot doesn't really look nice and the flash / js / css solutions do not really fit my requirement of creating charts on the server side. I found Eastwood (http://www.jfree.org/eastwood/) which emulates Google Charts but you may run it on your own server. This is quite a good solution, but I do not really like the idear of having to run a servlet container.
