For me, it would be enough if the binaries for the previous versions did not disappear from the mirrors, and big changes in SAGE came with big changes in the version number. I could then tell my students to: "use any version of SAGE starting with 4.1, but use SAGE>=4.2 at your own risk" right at the begining of the course.
