My 20 year-old son saw THE FAMILY THAT PREYS over the weekend (I
refuse to pay first run money for a Tyler Perry movie) with two of his
college friends. They saw it at a white theater predominantly filled
with black people (his college town is light on black folks) and he
reports they had a raucous good time, talking back to the screen and
clapping at film's end. He proclaims it Tyler Perry's best movie (a
very low bar).

some of his releases, but still a good haul, that I think made him

in the audience. I think Perry has the formula down pat and is slowly
but surely expanding his scope to include other races. Just watch:
he'll bring in an Asian or a Latino in a significant role within the
next two years.

charaters, but there's always a moment when his protagonists and
antagonists just fall into cardboard cutouts representing the extreme
poles of behaviour.
