(313) New Records
Thought I would just preview a couple of records that may be (indirectly) of interest to 313-ers. Speedy J: A Shocking Hobby (Novamute) Just got this today. I am not overly familiar with Speedy's previous work but he seems to be one of those folks newly enamoured with 'The Breakbeat''. This album has a mix of experimental and dancefloor tracks and is, I suspect, a grower. I think I preferred Luke Slater's Wireless, an album that I felt was underrated, and even misconstrued, within 'techno' circles. DJ Q: TwentyFour7even (Filter) This is a quality 'tech-house' album that features the single Optimum Thinking. DJ Q has won respect from the likes of Carl Craig and Derrick Carter and that's understandable. One of the tracks is actually a dedication to Carter. There's a classic Detroit influence on a handful of tracks, Way Back Then and The End Of The Beginning. I would say that this is a worthwhile record but not outstanding in the way that Laurent's is. But then, to be fair, Laurent has been at it a whole lot longer. In other news: I'm told that Planet E's catalogue is now getting distribution through Siren in Australia and that the People Make The World Go 'Round single should be out about now. So, um, that's fabulous. Also there's a Giorgio Moroder 'tribute' coming out with remixes. On the good side Felix The Housekat, Roger Sanchez and Danny Tenaglia contribute, on the bad there's Paul Oakenfold and a bunch of wack German trance producers (ie. no one good like DJ Hell or Ian Pooley). The track list is at least novel; I wish I had a copy, someone read it out to me on the phone. I just think it's a shame (obviously) that there aren't any 313 cats on there. C
(313) Detroit Hip-Hop
Remember we were discussing Slum Village a few months back? Carl Craig brought Slum Village in to remix People Make The World Go 'Round - hopefully that will see light of day soon on Planet E. Slum Village are a great new hip-hop outfit from Detroit. Think Native Tongues style hip-hop for the 2K. One of the members is JayDee who also forms part of The Ummah, A Tribe Called Quest's production arm, along with Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. (I am not exactly sure of the status of this triumvirate since Tribe's demise?) Slum Village's album, Fantastic Vol 2, has been widely bootlegged in the underground but has never seen the light of day due to some bad decision-making at Interscope. Anyway, news is that the group have now left the label and the album will now come out in the US via on Baraka/Goodvibe/Atomic Pop in May. The album features input from Q-Tip, D'Angelo, Pete Rock, Busta Rhymes and Kurupt. Also I just got a promo copy of another hip-hop CD from a West Coast outfit called The People Under The Stairs. The title is The Next Step and it's out via Om Records. It's kinda on the ol' skool, 'conscious' hip-hop tip, very funky and upbeat. But to bring it back to 313, there are three tracks with input from one DJ Assault. Would this be the same DJ Assault?
Re: (313) KMS and Kevin Saunderson
>And BTW, what´s Kevin been up to lately ? Any projects ? Releases ? He has been working on a new Inner City album. This comes from an article I wrote late Decemeber: A new Inner City album is nearly complete. "The Inner City album is shaping up fine. I'm close to 10 tracks. I'm trying to get it all finished before I get to Australia, but I think I'm going to come back and finish a track or two... It's probably a little different - actually, it's not 'probably', it's a lot different than people would anticipate. It's gone away from dance music in a certain capacity. You know, we've changed our styles." Saunderson reveals that the Y2K incarnation of Inner City sounds more downtempo, experimental and accommodates both live instruments and electronics. The finished set should come out next year via PIAS (Play It Again Sam). Peace Cyclone

Yeah, I know this thread's finished, but I've got new info / questions - My mate, who stayed longer than me said that 'No Way Back' was either Carl's last track, or even the first track of the guy after him. - Does anyone know the name of that wicked house track that he played, which had a really uplifting vocal which went "I feel alright, the world is good!" (or something similar)? - In response to the query about the Richie Hawtin Mary Anne Hobbs mix. Richie did an hour mix on her show (she's a late night BBC Radio jock) in December last year. It was all quite downtempo stuff. - Was someone talking about a new Mills 12" the other day or did I dream it? Peace, Nick __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

yes, that piece does look *very* familiar. to post it on a site without credit is breaking copyright. and the webmaster even admits this by his/her "Will the author of this article please drop me a note?" line at the top of the piece on the website. it's a great article, but that's a lame lame lame and disrespectful (to the writer and the magazine) way to spread it around. andrew duke e&a rinon wrote: > -Original Message- > From: stephen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: 313@hyperreal.org <313@hyperreal.org> > Date: Monday, 28 February 2000 18:45 > Subject: Re: (313) house music (the real story) > > >Found this obscure article on Trax on a search engine (sherlock), very > >entertaining, does a nice job going over the origins of chicago house. > >http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/1392/Trax.html > > > > this is coppied(word4word) from a Magic feet thing, that was done(i think) by > Cal(essence) who is on this list > > e,r -- Cognition/Andrew Duke's In The Mix mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://techno.ca/cognition 1096 Queen St #123 Halifax NS Canada B3H 2R9

(313) RE: Live on the Decks 3 w/ Ritchie Hawtin
I just got back from Chicago late last night and was all excited to fill everyone in on this party, but it looks like Steve beat me to it (see below). I'll just go ahead and fill in the blanks. I, too, got there around midnight and found the huge mass of several hundred kids standing out in the cold wind, freezing their asses off. For the hour I stood there, the line didn't move. My friends and I tried to position ourselves at different spots in the masses, but no matter where we stood, the line wasn't moving. Then, eventually, people got sick of standing in the cold and just bum rushed the tent. It was a site. Like 400 kids just going for it, riot style. It was fucked up that things had to happen like that, but the disorganization of the promoters was SO frustrating and uncalled for. There's no excuse for leaving close to a thousand people outside in the cold in t-shirts. The promoters knew they had 6000 kids coming. Why hadn't they made the necessary arrangements? So the riot took place and rightly so. Within 3 minutes though, the police started appearing and all hell broke loose. Kids got beat down and the police just went psycho with thier nightsticks, flashlights and dogs. It was terrifying to see people getting trampled and assaulted. I had my camera and tried to get a few pictures, but in all the chaos, I was only able to get a few good shots of the people swarming the tent. So the swarm of police officers eventually forced everyone out of the tent through force and threat. I wanted to get inside, but I didn't want to get beat down with a nightstick Rodney King-style like some of the other unfortunate kids. About an hour later, this huge line of like 2,000 people formed on the side of the building, leading towards a rear exit the size of my bedroom door: the largest bottleneck in the world. Upon seeing this, I was furious. All I wanted to do was get inside and see Ritchie. I had wasted two hours waiting in line and now it seemed as though I was going to have to spend at least another two to three hours in another line. Luckily, just as we got in line, somebody opened up a side door -- and exit -- and about 100 of us just went for it, sprinting through this doorway before the security could stop us. I felt very very fortunate. The party was pretty cool, very big. Unlike Steve, I spent the entire evening in the laser tag room. The best way for me to describe this room is to make a comparison to the concluding finale in "The Empire Strikes Back" where Luke and Darth Vader fight in this strange black and red room with cylanders shooting up out of the ground and elevated platforms framing the main floor. People were crammed in the small room. There was a haze from all the persperation. I remember standing on a distant platform, looking down at the crowd and Ritchie and not being able to see clearly through all the moisture in the air. Sweat was just dripping off my head even when I wasn't dancing. There was so much moisture in the air that none of my pictures turned out clearly. My flash couldn't cut through the air and would bounce back, making the pictures look all hazy. In sum, this room was fucking amazing. Not only because of the textural context but also because of all the people just out of their minds in the heat. Even if you weren't tripping or rolling or smoked out, you felt disorientated from the temperature. Acquaviva was good, but Ritchie was so amazing that I seldom left the room for the whole 5 hours he spun. I could sit here and explain exactly how amazing he is, but I feel like I don't have the time. The bottom line: you couldn't even tell when he would bring in a new track. Completely seamless. It seemed as though he used his machines more than his records. Or his records only functioned to bridge his spontaneous creations. Due to the heavy 909 use, it was a very percussive set with tons and tons of explosive bass kicks and dense layers of symetric percussion loops. He would slow things down and send the crowd into a frenzied state by going into a "Spastik"-like percussive build-up topped off with the hammering entry of the 909 kicks. Things concluded with him going through his montage of the three versions of "Orange" with the Nitzer Ebb vocals. After this, he put the records away and spend a good 15 minutes just working his 909. In the end, everyone was screaming, hollering and giving him a standing applause. One last note: About Chicago, this was my first party there. Though the whole riot and the disorganization made me extremely frustrated and thinking that I'm just too old for these kiddy raves anymore, my attitude changed inside. It was great to see 6,000 kids partying. I literally felt like the oldest one there, besides the DJs. This made me realize that there are a lot of kids into this music in Chicago and the surrounding area. Thier future looks bright. After the party I spent some time talking to some of the kids, and they

It sure did inspire that track ... I believe one pressing on Retroactive even had the subtitle "Susie Bannion Mix" (the lead character). The end of the track has a sample of the recurring eerie chord as well. -d -- Dan Sicko [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.reverbmag.com http://www.techno-rebels.com

Is it still available??? >"Peu Etre Pais", from the Liaisons Dangereuses LP on Roadrunner (1981?). Long out of print. yes its both on the 12" roadrunner rr125537 (holland) and the lp teldec import service tis 66.22433 as (france) same pic cover the lp is white background the 12" is black e,r

(313) anyone checked out Transmat lately?
I was on the site the other night and saw a video for John Beltran's Indio project, "Armenian Eyes" and another one for Hakan Lidbo...which was the strangest of the 2... had some home video footage from some "Ladies Aid Society" meeting in Detroit... it was suppose to be the video for Hakan's "first stop" but it was this smooth jazz type thing with home video footage...anyone at transmat care to enlighten us? I did like Kenny Larkin's dj mix on there...and the beltran video is cool...everyone has to check that out...the beginning is funny...what was that from? or is that kenny hammin' it up? minto

I believe triangle of love is actually a techno cover of New order's Bizzarre love triangle. And yes it's damn fine. Funny this would come up today because I had it in my head when I left home this morning. Can't wait to get back and submit to it's insidious charms. peace, _joe

RE: (313)Rock to the Beat / Triangle of Love
I've always wondered if the vocal "Rock to the Beat" is a sample or not. I've always thought it sounds like Kim Gordon (!) I'll also throw in some praise for Triangle of Love, that vocal is so raw its beautiful. Someone mentioned New Order and that's what I thought the first time I heard Triangle. So I doubt this is just a coincidence, how much influence did New Order have in the D? Technique remains as one of my favourite albums of all time. Is this a "go read Techno Rebels" question?
