RE: (313) Movement has competition...
To be fair, there are 'some' small local events that do better than what you see on that flyer however they are extremely few and very far between. For the most part though, Frank hit it dead on. At least here in the New England area, local events seem to have musicaly gotten stuck in 2000 and never managed to break free. Promoters tend to book the "known quantities" to be sure that they bring in some numbers. Most people here only know (and show up to hear) the acts that they've already been exposed to. This is one of the main reasons why I'm glad that there are a couple of us doing regular college shows in the area. Promoters generally won't bring "unknown" acts to this area. So, if you can't bring Mohammad to the mountain bring the mountain to Mohammad... -ant- -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Matt Kane's Brain Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2008 4:20 PM To: Guilherme Menegon Arantes Cc: Klaas-Jan Jongsma; Carlos De Brito; Frank Glazer; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) Movement has competition... RE: (313) US Mail Order
Ouch! I've never shopped in their physical store. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2008 9:39 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) US Mail Order LOL - I just was in that shop this weekend with a 313 lurker after not going there in well over a year (at least) that store is in such a miserable condition granted they've gone mostly online but they've always had problems with the brick & mortar First off - they've always filed the records by artists FIRST name so you'll find your Derrick May, for example, in the "D" section - not the "M" now how often do you recall the first name of an artist but always remember the last name? For me it's about 98% because I'm afflicted with record store amnesia. You know, you go into a shop and forget not only the names of the records you are looking for but your name as well. For some reason the owner thought he had to reinvent the wheel but he made it square. Second, the shop was always (actually still is) packed to the gills with multiples of the same mediocre records. The bins are so full it's hard to flip through them. And it looks like they might have tons of different records but they don't. They have anywhere between five and ten of the same records. I kept coming across the same titles again and again this weekend. Third - they rarely if ever seem to be able to get anything you special order At one point they were incredibly disorganized. Never knew what they had in stock. It would show up in their online database but then it wouldn't be where it was supposed to be in the shop. You'd have to dig and dig and dig and dig and dig and dig and dig... I've spent nearly an hour looking for one fuxking record on multiple occasions. The staff would help but then give up as well. Their deep house and house sections - I can't tell what the hell kind of criteria they are using to differentiate between the two. I found MAW in the house section and really cheesy "tech-house" in the deep house section along with other MAW selections. It makes no sense. On top of all this they used to have DJs playing some of the most obnoxious trance music so freaking loud you could barely hear what you were listening to in the headphones at the listening stations - of which they only have one now Now this last time we were in there I was looking for some things they said they had online. I couldn't find them so I went to the shop owner who was in the middle of either tearing apart the walls of the store or rebuilding it (seriously). He looked the items up and said they had them but they were downstairs (in the employee only basement area). He asked me if I wanted the items because he'd have to go look for them and that it was easier if I just placed the order online! Fer fxck sake - I'm in the gd store! How much easier can I make it for them? Put the damn thing out on the shelf and you won't have to pull the records for me. Seems like they're selling primarily overpriced streetwear clothing now in the store. Oh, he also said he wanted to concentrate their stock primarily on new releases. So I guess he's going to continually be discounting records. That's the only positive side of things. Give me a big fat discount for putting up with all his crazy b.s. so, if you come to Mpls don't count on finding much in store at Vital Vinyl (the name is a joke - most of it is NOT vital) shopping for techno/house/etc. records in Minneapolis has become a pain since the last good shop closed to make way for a high-rise condo MEK "Anton Banks \(www.antonbanks.com\)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote on 01/22/2008 07:33:06 PM: > I'm glad this topic was started. RE: (313) US Mail Order
I'm glad this topic was started. Paying $20 per record after taxes, shipping, and the miserable exchange rate is a bit much. It's pretty sad state of affairs when this much effort can only drum up a list of two US stores (Gramaphone and Forced) though. For what it's worth, check out www.vitalculture.com (formerly Vitalvinyl) out of Minneapolis, MN. *Some* Detroit stuff comes through there but it's probably far less than what people on this distribution would want. Hope this helps...

(313) Track posted- Feedback please?
Hey All, I've been messing around with this over the past 2 weeks. Please give it a listen and let me know what you think. Perhaps the structure isn't the best (you be the judge) but I'm at least hoping that I've gotten a little better with the final EQ/levels. Any feedback (good or bad) is greatly appreciated. I'll probably be the only one who enjoyed this but here it is anyway... I came across the video to "People Are Still Having S3x" by LaTour on Youtube. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZP05N_bZ60Y I hadn't heard this in ages. Interestingly, the word "AIDS" was replaced with "Safe". -ant-

There's a new record coming out on Clone. Egyptian Lover, Alden Tyrell, Dexter and Jamie Jupiter recording under the name "Clone Machine". Anyone else get this? I think it's pretty good.

RE: (313) Cisco's Demise
That's too bad. I remember trying to find the place (and getting lots of help from the locals) the first time I was in Japan. They had a pretty nice selection. I even ended up trading mix tapes with one of the guys that worked there (Morita Takeda Taniguchi). I still listen to that mix from time to time. I also remember having lots of "fun" trying to pack/stuff several pieces of vinyl in my luggage for the trip back home. I may be back in that area soon and had been looking forward to visiting the place again. There goes that idea... That really is a shame. I liked that store. Hopefully, this isn't an indicator of the Japanese techno scene. -ant- -Original Message- From: Simon Swain [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, November 26, 2007 4:55 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Cisco's Demise Word on the street from Tokyo: "I know... it"s not good.. well, Cisco in Osaka is closing down, but they are combining all the stores in Tokyo into 1 store. I have been trying to get him to post info about his show on 313 for quite some time now but it is just not in his nature... so I am doing it for him. 'Technovisions' with O.L. (313) Another radio show you may like!
A good friend of mine has been doing a radio show at another station here in Connecticut for several years now. Some of you old school 313ers may remember him as a regular guest on the "Hillbilly House" show here in CT some years ago. I have been trying to get him to post info about his show on 313 for quite some time now but it is just not in his nature... so I am doing it for him. 'Technovisions' with O.L. From The Basement Alternating Wednesday nights. (Next show is tomorrow night, June 13) 7:30 to 10:30 eastern US time (GMT-5:00) Streaming audio is available at www.wrtcfm.com For what it's worth, I highly recommend his show. Orrin has been playing Detroit stuff since day one. I count OL as one of the people who got me interested in radio and shaped my tastes in music. Please give him a listen, you won't be dissapointed! -ant-

RE: (313) DJs in restaurants
I see it both ways. I absolutely agree that it gets kind of weak playing in places that are only looking to boost their chic factor. You only get to play music that is easily digestible so you might as well be a jukebox or sirius. On the other hand though, I played at a museum a while back. It was pretty good except for the handful of people asking for stuff which obviously didn't fit in with what I was playing. I've looked at playing in places like that as a challenge to get a handfull of people to dance even though that's not necessarily why they went there. Besides, certain settings can put you in a position where you are the first person to play "techno" to a given audience. I guess it depend on the situation but it might not be a bad thing. my 2 cents... -ant- -Original Message- From: diana potts [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 11, 2007 9:37 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) DJs in restaurants I agree with Tom. (313) Time:Space2
I spent the day listening to Time:Space vol 2 on Transmat. What a great compilation start to finish. It's one of those CDs that (for me anyway) fits the mood no matter what the mood is. Also brings back fond memories to my first time at the festival.
