Yes there is, regardless of what one thinks a lot is. I once worked for
the DUI office here in Pittsburgh (population including surrounding
counties a little over a million) and the year end fiscal report would
blow your mind. It's a multimillion dollar business, and I mean
BUSINE$$! The recent lowering of the acceptable BAC, has just added more
money to the coffers.

But I digress, I'm really looking forward to this weekend and I'm sure
I'll see many of the attendees on this list at some point.

Title says it all really.

I've said on this list before I seem to spend all my time listening to clips of new
12"s at record shop sites. Often with little
reward as there doesn't seem that much good new stuff out to justify doing
that, instead of what I should be, which is:

1. Listening to the good records I did actually buy but am too busy listening
to clips of more stuff to have actually played.

2. Listening to mixes I'd enjoy - and which when I actually do I generally get
more exposure to good records I haven't heard and
should set about buying (albeit 2nd hand and a bit harder to track down) than I
do from shops.

So the only time I seem to do 2 above is when I'm on holiday. After a month in
Cuba last year I found a load of stuff I want to
know about off those Deep Space Radio shows from a bit back. I came on here
and said I'd cut and post clips. But surprise,
surprise as soon as I'm back in the UK working, going out and listening to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] shop's mailouts I've no time. Now I've come back
from a month in Brazil with more stuff I've heard on my mp3 player and want to
know what it is and buy!

My only hope in the most pressing of these cases, 2 tracks from a mix of C2 stuff by
Pacou called "Pacou_-_CarlCraigWorks", is that
rather than me having to get round to posting clips someone else knows this mix
(I can't remember if I got it off here or somewhere
else) and can tell me what the tracks at about 53 and 58 mins are. They sandwich
one of the well known 69 tracks from R&S (though I
can't remember which one now) which is on around 55 mins. Anyone got a
tracklist for this mix? I was frightened when I listened to
it as I went in thinking "oh yeah I'll know everything on this since I'm a C2
man but it'll be nice to lay in this hammock listening
to one classic after another" only to find quite a few I didn't know. The two
I'm after are hot.

Re: (313) Fake Los Hermanos record?

2004-07-28 Thread Ben Britz
This doesnt really matter. trademarks emerge through use, not
registration. if you use the name as the artist and people
recognize the name as the artist, then thats the trademark,
registered or not
Moreover, theres a decent argument that people would assume an
artist called los hermanos is part of the record label (ala UR) -
sort of a variation on the "aunt jemima" theory of trademarks
(holds that even though aunt jemima is a trademark for pancake
batter, someone else cant use the name to sell syrup)

at least thats what i think i remember from class last semester ;)

well, i would think a lot people shopping for that record or buying
it are lured in by the name, which they associate with the work of
rolando and gerald. thats the basis of trademark infringment

Re: AW: (313) miss kitten ?

2004-07-22 Thread Ben Britz

Miss Kitten is definitely worth seeing in my book. I dont care for
her production stuff or that 80s/electroclash junk, but she is a
very talented dj. Her sets are mostly euro-techno, with little bits
of electro and more eclectic stuff thrown in to spice it up. More
technasia than larry tee. I'm seeing her friday in DC and am quite
excited about it actually.

the claude young party was ok. Musically it was great, claude played
a really good and very long set with rudiman doing keyboards over
top (i could have done without that, personally). The venue
disappointed
though - horribly weak sound, weird layout, a bathroom line around
the block - at least the outdoor patio was cool. The crowd wasnt so
great either - NO ONE DANCED - just people 10 deep crowded around
claude staring at him. i felt like i was at some sort of seminar
rather than a nightclub. who stole the fun?

tried to go to the may, pullen, k, krivit afterparty, but arrived
to find
they had a no camera policy and wouldnt even let you check them. as
a trip back to the hotel would have set us back ages and stuck us in
a rather long line we hopped over to the tronic party at the works
instead. christian smith blew the place apart, but frankly i spent
most of the night by the bar getting drunk, so my impressions are a
bit skewed.

Festival:
only made it sunday, but had a blast. I saw:
mike huckaby - old school, old school, old school. old school
detroit techno, old school euro techno, old school chicago house.
hey went back, way back, back in the day.
joris voorn - pretty boy plays techno. not my favorite, but ok
orlando voorn - rocked it. best, most charismatic hard techno set
i've heard in ages - at least since technasia at tronic about a
year ago.
ron trent- did his usual deep afro thing to a packed tent of
people escaping the rain
francois k - wow. all i can think to say is that it was a once in a
lifetime set. if you've heard his sonar set, you have an idea of
the style, but this was just genius.

Stuff I missed but heard about:
heard nothing but raves about TP, Mike Grant, and Ken Ishii (at
tronic 1). the mike dearborn party was universally described as a
crackden.

Festival 1, Afterparties 0 this year, imho

yeah, i grew up in jackson (ok, brooklyn to be precise) and toledo
and whenever i'm dealing with people from outside the area i
usually just say detroit or the detroit area. it's just a handy,

2004-05-06 Thread Ben Britz
nothing wrong with the original, but the remix blew. i usually have
a very high cheese tolerance, especially by 313 standards, but that
was a step too far for me - especially as the entire set was cheesy,
not just that record (as opposed to the pullen set i mentioned,
which was fantastic, one bad record or not). not like it ruined my
life or anything, it just kinda sucked, thats all.
thats my subjective opinion and i'm sticking to it :)

RE: (313) Jeff Mills comp on Azuli

2004-05-04 Thread Ben Britz
I really like the DT one, though it took me a bit to warm up to it.
He must have spent an immense amount of time on it because he
re-edits nearly every track and writes a paragrah or two in the
liner notes on each of them.
Also have the Francois K and DLC discs and they are amazing as well.
Gonna pick up Vega's asap and then Mills.

RE: (313) Laurent Garnier

2004-04-27 Thread Ben Britz
i could have guessed he wouldnt be a favorite around these parts,
but generally speaking, people who dont like carl cox need to pick
their heads up from their laptops and remember what clubs are about.
he rocks it. sorry to be harsh, but i just dont get people who
criticize him. then again, to each his own i guess

as for garnier, i find that the "eclectic" bit of his sets doesnt
change much, but the techno portions (which are what i enjoy) are
generally pretty cutting edge and absorbing, even if he does have
some old favorites - what DJ doesnt? I saw garnier thursday at
centro-fly and thoroughly enjoyed myself. he certainly doesnt come
around often enough for me to get bored

then again, i'm a student, so what do i know...
