RE: (313) Here we go....(12" CD)

2003-05-02 Thread Odeluga, Ken
Look, you're all missing the point on this!

(Errr, what is it?!)

The central thing is (it seems to me) a 12" CD won't fit in the standard CD
player (non-standard ones in the entire world surely number in the hundreds
at the moment) + you can already get a substantive amount of tracks on a 4"
(or whatever the diameter, I haven't checked in a while ;) CD and with
constant improvements in technology, this can only increase. Therefore a 12"
CD is a redundant idea.

The phonemes 'GIMM' and 'MICK' come to mind ...

Re: (313) Here we go....

2003-05-01 Thread Phonopsia
I don't think this is a bad idea at all. Why not? The risk is minimal
compared to vinyl, it's a little extra money to help keep the label alive,
and there are some people (like Joe) for whom it is a better solution.

I agree the marketing of it is a bit silly, but so what? Most marketing is
silly. I just think it's sort of funny that they were once called CD 5's (or
Maxi-singles) in order to differentiate a CD single with multiple remixes
from the little 2" or 3"CD singles (however big they were). "CD 12" is an
improvement over the gynecological name of old, and "CD 5" never really made
much sense since full-lengths were also 5"s. For that matter, the term 12"
as opposed to album doesn't make a lot of sense, so one more silly term
among many really doesn't bother me. In fact, I'd like to think of it as an
homage to the history of f*cked up recording format names. ;)

I think this is a good idea too:

Record labels offer a catalogue of mp3s. You can buy a batch of mp3 tracks
which would be offered on their web site for sale. The label would then
compile all requested mp3s on one cd which would make it easy to transfer to
Final Scratch, DJ software (for non-vinyl guys and gals), or any other
computer jukebox. (kind of like Beastie Boys offered a few years back on cd)

I'd be interested in paying $50 for 20 songs from my favourite labels
instead of $10 - $15 for 3 or 4 tracks on vinyl 12" (and there may only be 1
track I really care for on the 12").

I wish someone would release this stuff on CD... I dont have room in my
studio area for record players and most of its available only on vinyl...

this leaves me with soulseek (stealing the music basically) as my only
option. I'd happily buy even CD-Rs that are just remastered for CD and
throw down as mp3s. 2 records for 15 or 20 bux would seem fair to me.

But actually this reminds me of a record put out by Nate Young of Wolf
Eyes under the name Etan Gnuoy (i think). It's a shiny record cut down to
cd size and packaged in a cd jewel case. Very confusing. not really 313
material, but a nice example of vinyl as art.

That's kind of stupid outside of the real dedicated house head (who doesn't

Start by trimming off the excess bits of vinyl around the label. This bit is
mostly useless and contains wavy lines and fuzzy noise.
Next you need to boost your laser power of the cd player to read the new cd

Now your you can place the vinyl in the cd player and its ready to play no

of course not! perish the thought that other labels might release a
single
originally on vinyl to CD.
note to wave: make sure there's some previously unreleased bonus b-sides
for a value added bonus!

Now vinyl for promo/Dj's or so called

How many cd players do you know of that play 12" cd's ;)

My point exactly.

They're trying to make music only burned on Vinyl more easily accessible
to the masses via CD Singles. Nothing more ...

So this big deal is about a CD single? Haven't those been around for years

I don't get it... Is this a 12" size CD? Or just the contents of a 12"

Is it just me or does this not make any sense?

Well, I've no crystal ball or anything, but I reckon it may be a bad
business plan to invent a new CD format without a player for it.*
but, hey what do I know? I still got a betamax and plugging my phone into
this commodore 64 doesn't seem to get me on ebay either..

oh, and I can't make no broken beats with this MMT8 either.

I need to listen to Contemporhythms again, but on first listen I found it a
little bit weak. It gets a lot better towards the end, but I didn't think it
was near the standard of the 2 These Days and Times CDs
Having said that, I'll probably love it this time next week.
