[sc-issues] [Issue 33851] Behavior with cut/copy/pas te/fill cells and autofilter
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=33851 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Aug 18 22:13:58 -0700 2006 --- As Eike (er) points out, to be "like Excel" is not a sufficient specification of the requirement. When people say "like Excel" this might be a considered view covering all scenarios, but in other cases the person only sees a small part of the behaviour and does not know about other things done by Excel. So "like Excel" is only a guide but it is not sufficient for definition of a requirement. I think it is useful first to consider how a filtered spreadsheet is used. It is different from other uses of a spreadsheet. The filter is a visual tool, that changes a view of the values, while the underlying cell contents including formulas are not changed. The filtered spreadsheet mainly has significance for the user looking at the values. Typical uses of a filter would be: - view rows where a cell in some columns meets some criteria - clean up data - change certain values (like re-code of data) - fill cells with data according to some criteria - extract (copy) values from rows that meet some criteria Notice that the user in these cases is only concerned with values. In my experience any other uses, would be better done a different way (not using filters). Also consider how other features are implemented when there is ambiguity about the user intention. Copy/paste is a good example. Does the user intend to copy the formula or the value? There are plenty of users that have no idea about this, and the feature defaults to paste the formulas. Should formulas be replicated as relative reference or absolute? What is the intention of the user? My point here is that ambiguity about features is common and does not prevent implementaation, it is only necessary that a decision is made. I would never recommend a user (either Excel or OOo) to adopt scenario 2,3 or 5, as I do not consider those to be safe or good practice, however I accept others may feel differently. So I will comment only on 1 & 4. If anyone explains their reasons for using 2,3 or 5 I will try and suggest a different method. Scenario 1 copy/paste - in my experience this is useful only for pasting values. I cannot imagine why anyone would like to paste formulas copied from a filtered range, or how the users intention could be described. The decision in Excel to paste values seems a reasonable solution, and would at least be an improvement over the current behaviour. I would be interested if anyone can explain the reasons for pasting formulas from a filtered copy. Scenario 4 fill - for me this is the feature that I have used frequently in Excel and it is my "most wanted" for OOo. I think this feature alone would be large improvement. The requirement in this case seems clearly specified. Regarding the Excel implementation, I would not search for logic there. My recollection is the same bug existed in early Excel filters and was fixed about 13 years ago, possibly some compromise was necessary. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. What is wanted is more shortcut assignment options. 1. Use of Alt Key combinations as well as Control, Control Shift. Two keystrokes shortcuts like ~n to type ñ as in Word, might also be wanted by some users. 2. Direct assignment of text — one or more characters 3. A simplified dialogue like that attached to make the customising process easier. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=33851 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Aug 18 21:39:40 -0700 2006 --- 6. Delete cells Delete only non-filtered rows. - Excel 2003 does that. We discussed it with er and it looks Excel implementation is logical if we want for example to delete, but why cut is different? Same good is copy, but paste is might be parital solution in Excel and fill series does not usable at all. (I also found a bug with cut because you can't undo it when you set back filtering to show everything:) This applies to Excel 2k3 and it is corrected in Excel 2k7) I think Excel support these thing at minimal level. Of course Calc does not so we need more improvement, it is sure. To conclude, my first idea was - do it like Excel. After a testing peroid with Excel 2k3 and 2k7 beta I see the picture different. Of course we have to do some things like Excel. These are: * Copy (Currently it is ok in Calc) * Delete (Must be fixed ASAP in Calc) * Fill cells (Must be fixed ASAP in Calc) But others might be better than excel * Cut (Must be fixed in Calc and Excel) - It should work like Delete * Paste (Excel is paste only values, is it enough to us or should is be better like formula copy/"translation"? We have to discuss it.) * Fill series (NA in Excel) Do we need it at all? Of course it can beat MS in filtering theme :o) Also what about to implement a button (generally a switch) that show and hide the filtered data. It might make the life easier, does't it? In my opinion we should slice this issue to parts and implement it one by one. I think the delete should be the first (along with cut) - PATCH is provided by ooo-build's guys but we have to test/review it. Then paste and fill at the end fill series... I used the "Edit index entry" dialog for this purpose. Usually when the user clicks "next" button in the dialog, the cursor jumps to the text where the index entry is inserted. That allows the user to check out the text and then decide what to do with the index entry. But often the cursor stops jumping to the next index entry. When this happens, I see that Writer highlights one of the following: (a)a cell of a table (b) An entire "nested table" (table that is inserted in another table) After that, the index entry dialog shows the next entries, but the Writer stops following the text. The screen keeps showing the highlighted part. As a result, I can't see where the index entry is. The GUI does not even show the current page number. It becomes very difficult to judge what to do. The only way out is to close the dialog, skip some lines and start all over again. A slightly older version of this defective file is with mru. [sw-issues] [Issue 4579] Special Character Shortcuts
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=4579 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Aug 18 16:12:56 -0700 2006 --- I have described an alternative method to implement this in issue: http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=67500 Instead of using a key combination, a simple work-around would be to use automatic word-replacements, e.g. a' => to some special character (e.g. ä) A' => another special character (e.g. Ä) a+ => some other special character ... Hovever, for this to work, the automatic replacement should be alble to perform replacements inside words, too (not just whole words). Therefore, - either create a second replacement list, that specifies strings that are always replaced, even if it is not a word (e.g. Gra'ser => Gräser, in German grass) - or implement the more advanced feature of issue 67500 (i.e. wildcards in replacement lists) This type of implementation will not depend on any keystroke combinations (like alt+shift+something), and would easy allow implementing many special characters simultaneously, withoud the need for very dumb and hard to remember key combinations. (When choosing key combinations just for a few special characters, it is easy to assign meaningfull ones. However, if you try to extend the list of those special chars, you get really fast into trouble. My solution creates more logical pseudo-shortcuts.) If you find my solution good, please vote for that issue, too. Some of the developers showed somehow less optimism for that one. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Also, if in the same doc, same sheet, the copy & paste from one melted cell to another one is done as "paste special" with "paste all" turned off and "format" turned off as well, this still fails. Conclusion: The behaviour is seriously broken. In all cases, the copy should succeed, if done from one melted cell into another, it should just copy contents, not format as it appears to work when using another subsheet of the same or another spreadsheet document. Just for information: I have been told, in Microsoft Excel it works in any case as well. Furthermore, copying with "paste special" under the described circumstances must work in any case. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. Using line numbers from the OS's settings is nonsense, because they've been introduced from a completely different background: I scroll only some lines to still have the context (instead of scrolling a full page at once) when reading a longer text. However, in OO-Writer preview, when scrolling several pages at once - where is the point? [sc-issues] [Issue 33851] Behavior with cut/copy/pas te/fill cells and autofilter
To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=33851 User er changed the following: What|Old value |New value Summary|Paste/delete/modify cells |Behavior with cut/copy/pas |and autofilter like MS Exc|te/fill cells and autofilt |el|er --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Aug 18 14:18:39 -0700 2006 --- Let's recapitulate some scenarios to show that yet it isn't even agreed upon how the behavior should be: 1. Copy cells This sounds easy: just copy the cells that are not filtered out. - BUT: what to do on paste (on a non-filtered range) if the cells contain formulas with relative references? How to adjust? - Excel 2003 in this case doesn't paste the formulas, but only the values. 2. Cut cells Sounds the same as #1, just cut the cells that are not filtered out. Though the paste case may be easier, probably the references should be adjusted the same way as usual in a cut/paste scenario. - BUT: Excel 2003 in this case cuts _all_ cells, including filtered. 3. Paste cells Again sounds easy: just paste on the non-filtered rows. - BUT: what should happen with the gaps? Should the cells to be copied be skipped, or should they go in the next non-filtered row? - AGAIN: how to adjust relative references then? - Excel 2003 in this case pastes also to filtered rows if the cells were copied from a non-filtered range. It only does not paste to filtered rows if the cells were copied from the same filtered range _and_ rows. It does paste to filtered rows if the source rows were different. 4. Fill cells Sounds easy: fill only non-filtered rows. - Excel 2003 does that. 5. Fill Series Fill continuous in the non-filtered rows? Or fill with gaps, leaving out the values that would go into the filtered rows? Or do nothing? - Excel 2003 disables Fill Series on filtered ranges. You see, especially from #2 and #3 the argument "do it like Excel" is at least half-moot. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. In fact, the documentation agrees with me! The only place where the Bezier curve is adequately described states that, after the initial click and drag to start the curve, it is continued by further clicking and dragging in the direction you want to go. However, this is not actually the case. You actually need to click and drag *back* towards where you have come from before continuing in the direction you want to go. This is anything but intuitive and greatly disrupts the natural progression of drawing a smooth curve thereby making the feature very difficult to use. It seems that the program is losing users because of this unfriendly method. I think that once this feature is implemented correctly, people will find the tool to be much more friendly and understandable. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. I have also searched the web and tried various things... Let me try to summarize the issue better: Issue Description: The scroll bar (verticle) pop-up does not display font-correct information. Notes: - Wingdings, and other pre-installed fonts, appear to show up correctly. - I sent you the two fonts (Jaipur [devanagari] and e-Latin [transliteration]) that I have used to write this book on Nepali grammar, with the addition of an excerpt (the beginning) that if you scrub with the scroll bar after installing the two fonts, you will also see that the fonts do not display properly. Here is what I have tried so far...: - Under Tools->Options->Language Settings->Languages I have set to : *enable Asian languages support *enable complex text layout *locale is default, as is currency (tho tried to alter this, but still does not work). *Western is set to English *Asian does not have Hindi, or other languages that use devanagari script (e.g. Marathi, Sindhi, Nepali, etc.), to choose from. Only Chinese language variants appear here...so this Asian tag is a bit wierd.. * CTL DOES have a Hindi, Marathi, etc to choose from. But, it does not have the desired effect either (scrollbars still show wierd looking blocks instead of characters. === - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. If the single line widget contains no default text it prints just fine. However, if you load default text into them there are two problems: 1) It prints in the 3D style 2) Right justified text chops off to the right and to the bottom and doesn't fit into the widget correctly. Not to mention OOo Draw, where left-click initially selects (if not already selected), then after a short delay changes to DnD, which is signaled by a change in cursor shape. DnD in Writer requires a selection first, then a separate drag. IMO it is poor design for DnD to be destructive (i.e. replace data in the destination), or certainly not as the default. DnD in Writer always inserts. I'm not suggesting which is the best way, only pointing out that there are several places where OOo already implements DnD, and somewhat inconsistently. Adding further inconsistency at this point would detract from the added functionality. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. To comment on the following update, log in, then open the issue: http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=68773 --- Additional comments from [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Aug 18 07:33:24 -0700 2006 --- My company produces a product called "WinLims". In accordance with our style guide the text "Win" should be rendered in one font and colour, and "Lims" in a different font and colour. When writing the instruction manuals it is convenient to ignore the style guide, and apply the formatting to every instance of the text using Find & Replace once the manual is completed. Character styles have been created for the two parts of the text. We would like to "Find All" to select every occurrance of "WinLims", then "Find All" with "Current Selection Only" checked to highlight all the relevant instances of "Win". We would then like to apply the character style, or alternatively set the font and colour using the Formatting toolbar. The process is then repeated for "Lims". If the word "WinLims" appears in the Table of Contents or the Index then we are unable to change the formatting of all of the other occurrances because these indexes are protected. Manually deselecting the entries doesn't re-enable the formatting tools. Un-protecting the indexes allows us to make the changes but requires us to manually un-protect each of them first, then make our changes, then re-apply protection, however this quickly gets annoying as there are several indexes in this document. If you forget to un-protect one of the indexes before performing the search operations then the act of accessing the Edit Index/Table dialogue to do so results in all of the selected text being de-selected and the search has to be repeated. - Please do not reply to this automatically generated notification from Issue Tracker. If the target text also appears in a table of contents or index which has the "Protected against manual changes" checkbox enabled then all of the common text modification tools are disabled. Deselecting the target text within the index (by CTRL-Clicking on the selected entries) does not re-enable the tools. It would be useful if there was a means to omit such protected content from being selected, perhaps with an additional checkbox in the search dialogue. Alternatively the modification tools could still be available, but simply make no changes to the protected text.
