[AsburyPark] New businesses

2007-10-11 Thread MarioAPNJ
Sounds good. Anyone have additional details?
Dean and DeLuca? Faccio's? Balducci's born again?
Nino's or Sal's Deli models also great models.

"Four new businesses are coming to Asbury Park: a new clothing store
(dresses), a construction supply company, an audio/visual design and
instillation
business, and an Italian market. Stay tuned!"

From:

  Greetings from Asbury Park:
They keep telling me that summer's over but I just can't let go yet. For
some reason, Mother Nature also doesn't want it to end. OK, I submit. It's
raining and 64. This was just the best summer. Wait till next year!
The city is hosting its annual fall citywide cleanup this Saturday from 9 AM
to 1 PM. Meet at the City Hall Council Chambers. Call Lori Ross at
732.502.5727 or Rosetta Johnson at 732.502.4584 for details.
On Saturday, the Asbury Park Citizens on Patrol will hold a Flea Market from
9 AM to 4 PM in Sunset Park. This is a fundraiser for the organization and
proceeds will assist the volunteer group to buy equipment and supplies. This
is a great group of men and women who provide a very valuable service to the
city. Call Asbury Park Detective Connie Breech at 732.502.5777 or Lawson June
at 732.988.3269 for info. Rain date is Oct. 20th.
Although only five years old, this weekend marks another of Asbury Park's
fun and important traditions: The 5th Annual Asbury Park Mayor's Ball; "The
Children Are Our Future." This fundraiser supports Mayor Kevin Sanders'
initiative for education, arts and recreation for the youth of Asbury Park.
The gala
takes place on Saturday evening at the Berkeley Hotel. This is a time to
dress up, raise some money, have fun but most importantly, provide
opportunities
for a very talented and wonderful group of young city residents. These
children are our future and the future looks very bright! Stay tuned!
Our new mounted police patrol was introduced at First Saturday last weekend
and was a major hit. The city earned major press and radio coverage. The
horses are named Bold Ruler and Guinness and are quite the sight trotting down
the street. They wear special studded horseshoes so they don't slip on the
payment. Both horses were donated and live at a private farm in Wall Township
at
no cost to the city. A very special thanks to the Newark Police Department
who trained the horses and officers. Wilbur!
Speaking of major coverage, I hope you all caught Bruce Springsteen's
interview on "60 Minutes" last Sunday. There was major footage of the E Street
Band's rehearsals and the concerts that took place in Convention Hall. I've
spent
a great deal of time listening to the new CD (not an album - I'm making
progress) and personally think this is some of Bruce's best work. "I got a
coin
in my palm, I can make it disappear." - Magic!
We all know Asbury Park is a magnet for artists and two authors are on the
radar this month. Stephen Crane who lived in the city on Fourth Avenue is the
subject of a fascinating documentary, Greetings from Stephen Crane: The
Asbury Tales, being filmed and produced by Susan Pellegrini. I met Susan a
couple
of weeks ago and she is one talented filmmaker. Patti and I witnessed Susan
in action, as her camera captured the final day celebration at the Wonder
Bar. "The Red Gala" a launch party to introduce Susan and the project will be
held Oct. 20th. To get more details about the launch party call Michael Heath
at 732.299.6930 or Amanda Gavarny at 848.219.5727. This event is sponsored by
Perfect Vodka and Madison Marquette. And, a special ceremony marking the
anniversary of Jack Kerouac's death will take place at Americas' Cup on Sun,
Oct. 21. Kerouac and his first wife, Edie, spent some time in the early 40's
living at her grandmother's house on Sixth Avenue. After the marriage ended,
Jack headed out and "On The Road" has fascinated and influenced every reader.
Stay tuned!
Hillary Duff and the crew of Whitewater Films' "Greta" have left he city for
a couple of weeks but will return later in the month. The film was written
by Michael Gilvary who grew up in Fair Haven and also stars Evan Ross, Diana
Ross' son and Ellen Burstyn. The Paramount Theatre would be the logical venue
for the premiere. Anyone know what we did with the red carpet? Very cool!
Four new businesses are coming to Asbury Park: a new clothing store
(dresses), a construction supply company, an audio/visual design and
instillation
business, and an Italian market. Stay tuned!
Thanks for all the great birthday wishes. Patti treated me to a very
romantic dinner at Moonstruck on Friday evening. We haven't been there in
quite a
while but it was just as special as our first visit. Howard and Luke are the
best. I also got to spend some time with daughter, Linnea and son-in-law
Alonso
and my in-laws, Gig and Bob Ayling. We celebrated my birthday for three
days straight. Good thin

[AsburyPark] Re: Stoner: "It's Make-Believe Ballroom Time"

2007-10-11 Thread 2fine4u
The pleasure is all mine! This think-tank of a group, is a real
world, eye-opener! I leave myself, wide open, because I genuinely
believe and dream a world, where everyone lives in a town, called
"Perfect"!

I just finished reading about what kids really do now, and I see them
evolving into "wide loads", if you know what I mean! As much as I
love the grandkids, I can't wait for them to leave, so that I can run
this "disk-cleaner", that wipes face-book and those other "wierd"
sites and their "cookies", OFF of my hard drive and if I hear "Soulja
Boy", ONE more time, I'll RETCH! Hinge: JUST SAY NO! You cracked me
up, because I know most of the young people who starred in "CLERKS"
and "MALL-RATS"! Before the movies, I always thought they should have
been on Second City, or SNL! Man, do the screen-play, no, write the
book, first! I wasn't a perfect parent, none of us are, you know.

I learned as I went along and when I saw myself becoming my mother, I
did just the opposite! It worked! I never wanted to be a "MU-MU"
wearing mom! My Grandma wore them and I hated the look! Me? I wear
the "I can wear you outdoors", pajamas! They look like pantsuits,
except the waist is elasticized! A modern version of the what?
"MU-MU"! I look like I'm on my way to "yoga", class! Oh man, teen
drinking, has been going on since Roman Times, I guess!

One afternoon, after being released from school, just after lunch,
instead of going home, I went to my friends, who were a set of
fraternal twins, home and into the basement we went, to play records
and what else? DRINK! Drinking for us, (16), was Creme de Cocoa,
Anisette or Creme de Menthe! Cordials! It's what "nice" girls drank
in polite company. Drinking was part of my French Culture. At 2
weeks old, at my christening, I was given a sip of "pink" Champagne!
I gave the same to my kids, at theirs! Just to wet their lips! It is
a tradition and wine served at meals were no big deal!

Here in NJ, I would NEVER do these things! Now, I could land in jail!
I'm talking about the mid-60's, when all this occurred. My children
never had to "sneak" alcohol and when they reached "legal" age, here,
in NJ, didn't even bother with it. We lived on a hill, that had
"hair-pin" turns, so no drinking and driving either! I had heard of
too many cars, not making those curves, killing several people, up
there. You only have to tell me once!

If we DO get the surveillance cameras, ALL crime will go down, so I
wonder just how relevant it is to the authorities? Job security, you
know! I saw the Mounties on patrol on Channel 4! Yes, AP made the
nightly news and the 2 "Dobbins", were walking up Cookman Ave. Now,
really! What's the purpose? Oh God, I feel the taser, already!
Okay, enough! With her eye-brows raised, she said, "COMMENTS"?

pc since most programs including special ones are windows based. I
don't like either. don't use explorer or outlook express anymore. use
firefox and thunderbird, but some applications still require explorer.
someday soon it will all be open platforms (Linux) and less buggy.
That goes for mac too.

What was there before drew many more people, Kid's World and The Pier
were a bigger magnet than Pier Village. You also didn't see the code
enforcement officer's ex felon defunct Police Officer working as a
manager where a liquor lisence was in the old days. I also hear this
official's wife is also working there as well.

Pier Village was built while it's owner Joe Barry, was in Federal Pen
for bribing an elected official. Now out making millions.

Pier Village is an embarrassment to Long Branchers. Unfortunately,
like wounded knee it may take close to a century to find out just how
unconstitutional it all really was.

To The Lakota Nation To pOletown and to those in Long Branch who
suffered. ci' ami

Rafferty's should be a great success.

[AsburyPark] Coaster Article About Regionalizing Asbury Park Fire Services With Others

2007-10-11 Thread rook782
Chief Keddy, Reidy and Bruno favor the move.

This is great news. We should all get behind this effort.

Consolidating fire services is absolutely necessary for this city to do
in order to right itself from the budget deficits.

Of course, I love my Mac a thousand times more than my PCs. I only

How many of you are "still" using a pc vs. a mac.

Took me a long time til one night I was at the apple store with my

Now I just need an "mac" computer case to carry it to work and I can

Actually when I was a kid in Long Branch I was our block's pogo stick champion!  The sad thing is now kids never go out to play---Every night we played dodge ball, hit the bat, hide and seek, jingle jump or had handmade go karts with no brakes we would ride to the bottom of the hill.  That was such great fun!  After walking to St Michaels Church on Sunday we would go to Takanassee Lake and with a stick, string, cork and a safety pin look for worms so we could spend the day fishing!   Other days we would stick our little thumbs out and secretly  hitchike to the Long Branch Boardwalk to play pinball.  Sometimes we would explore the grounds of monmouth College or ride our bikes to Elberon Train Station for candy. I have such great memories of those days! No matter where we were the one important
thing was Never Be Late For Dinner or you were in big trouble!

[AsburyPark] Bullets strike house, garage in Asbury Park

2007-10-11 Thread Hinge
Ok folks, read below carefully, and then think back to posts describing the
technology of
surveillence cameras installed in Newark and East Orange.
These cameras have microphones on them that are directional, and can move the
camera
to focus on the area where the gunshots originated.
This time, nobody was hit.
The police have no description.
The don't know where the shots were fired from.
8 spent shell casings. That could've been 8 dead people.
Meanwhile, we have to wait for paperwork and bureacracy to go thru the motions.
And people outside of Asbury will start condemming us once again.

Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 10/11/07

BY MICHELLE SAHN

 Post Comment
ASBURY PARK — Police are trying to determine if someone fired a gun randomly or
if that
person was deliberately aiming at two boys when bullets struck a house and a
garage on
Church Street early this morning.

No one was injured in the incident.

Around 1 a.m., at least one bullet struck a house on the 600 block of Church
Street and
four more struck a garage on the same property, said Capt. David Kelso.

He said police are trying to determine if the shooting was random or if two
boys who were
in the area at the time were the targets of the shooter.

Kelso said police believe the shooter was on the street - not in a vehicle -
but police have
no description of that person.

Police recovered eight spent shell casings, he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Sgt. Randall Hill or
Detective April Bird
at (732) 775-4025. Information can also be left anonymously on the department's
tip line
at 1-800-799-8280.

Well it does bring people into other parts of town. Right down
Broadway, thus the effort to get Broadway up and running. Kind of like
if AP/Neptune cleaned up Asbury ave and Springwood - 2 gateways to the
shore. 33 is now nearing completion and now its a matter of time for
some of those properties to get cleaned up some more.

Then the entire stretch of 35 from the circle to the belmar bridge.

Go to Florida. Drive rt 1 from Ft. Lauderdale to S. Beach and keep on
going. Drive through ft. meyers. orlando. Granted you can't see the
ocean any more - but at least what you can see is clean. I rather see a
couple nice strips or "neighborhod centers" with big green patches then
4 miles of half-ass buildings with broken cars, barbed wire fences and
crap all over.

Chelsea ave in long branch had to rank right up there with one of the
worst street in monmouth county that had nice old large victorians
chopped up. They made an attempt to bring the two sides of ocean ave
together. theres plenty more growth left in long branch and asbury.

start by enforcing clean and safe streets, housing violations and crime.

Start with education.

[AsburyPark] Downtown Marketing

2007-10-11 Thread rook782
I always wondered why we don't have any major signs telling people
traveling on Main to turn into the downtown district. A lot of
tourists going up and down the coast might not even know this area
exists and just keep on going straight to somewhere else to spend their
money.

Really, for a few well placed signs, think how much traffic would be
diverted into the district and down along the ocean.

You're right Allan, it'll definitely appeal to certain groups because
it's a "safe" location. I doubt it brings many to other points in
Long Branch though. They've kind of created their own little suburb

Pier Village created a destination.

How many times has my daughter hit me up or blown her paycheck at Pier -
Greek to me, Sawa, Nirvanna or Jenna & Molly or michael angleos...for
the "new" kids, Pier V is hot. They are waiting for AP to lure them in,
other then the Pony. Does the downtown bring in the 16-20 year olds?
No - at least what I see. There is no draw for them. So will they be
drawn here 4 years, 7 or 10 years from now - when things may be more
built up??

Take Tinton Falls for example.
They approved building a Home Depot in an area where there are already 2 or 3

Ridiculous. We don't need it, but they let it happen anyhow.
More green space disappears with orange in it's place.
And what happened to American manufacturing. Gone. Terrible.
Recently I watched "The War" on PBS and it really showed how much America has
lost since
then in terms of manufacturing. We taught the world how to built quality
things, and then
gave it away.

Call the police.
My question: How come no ones is directing traffic?
A: We do, after the game.

As I continue to bitch I am told "you should both drive more carefully".

The major chains are on a mission to remove local identity from
the country and they are largely succeeding.

Again, where local governments have ordinances that control grwoth,
design etc.

mortgages.

TAXES. At least you have a few years in other places, like Indiana,
befreo all the people from NJ start bithcing they dont have garbage
pick up or have to take their own recycling or not enough police.

Where will we all wind up?

NJ moves to PA, PA hates NJ people, so they move to Ohio or VA or
Upstate NY. Move to Dallas or Houston, then those people move to
Austin.. or Mexico and the mexicans get so pissed becasue we build
home depots and everything right across the border and move there,
etc...

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: NYC Big Time PR

2007-10-11 Thread Gary Wien
Don't forget that for years malls were the coolest thing, but plenty
of towns are moving back to the downtown approach now. There are
many malls around the country that are closing or becoming different
than they once were (see Seaview Square as a local example).

The idea of things like Pier Village may be destination bound, but it
also could be a fad like the malls were.

And as far as people leaving New Jersey, I wonder if that takes
account for all of the immigrants moving into the state because it
just might balance things out. After a short trip back to Virginia,
I can say that from VA to NJ everything is starting to look the
same. There are chain restaurants, mini-outdoor malls, and
everything wherever you go. New Jersey is not the only place losing
an identity. The major chains are on a mission to remove local
identity from the country and they are largely succeeding.

So, why are these people leaving to? I'd say for lower mortgages.
Outside our borders doesn't really offer more or look different than
Jersey - just may be a little cheaper, that's all.

[AsburyPark] We reap what we sow...

2007-10-11 Thread jerseykev
We Reap What We Sow!! Body: The following was written by Ben Stein and
recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Com.

My confession:

I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not
bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up,
bejeweled trees Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel
discriminated
against. That's what they are: Christmas trees.

It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, "Merry Christmas" to me. I don't
think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact,
I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating
this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger
scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu. If
people want a crche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred
yards away.

I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think
Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who
believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no
idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist
country.
I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my
throat.

Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we
should worship Nick and Jessica and we aren't allowed to worship God as we
understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are
a
lot of us who are wondering where Nick and Jessica came from and where the
America we knew went to.

In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a
little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's
intended to get you thinking.

Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson
asked her "How could God let something like this happen?" (regarding Katrina)
Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response.
She said, "I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for
years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our
government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I
believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His
blessing
and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?"

In light of recent events...terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I
think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body
found
recently) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK.
Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou
shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself.
And we said OK.

Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they
misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might
damage t
heir self-esteem (Dr. Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert
should know what he's talking about. And we said OK.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they
don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers,
their classmates, and themselves.

Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I
think it has a great deal to do with "WE REAP WHAT WE SOW."

Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the
world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but
question
what the Bible says.. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they
spread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord,
people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene
articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is
suppressed in the school and workplace.

Are you laughing?

Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on
your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will
think of you for sending it.

Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than
what God thinks of us.

Pass it on if you think it has merit. If not then just discard it... no one
will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back
and complain about what bad shape the world is in. My Best Regards.
Honestly and respectfully,

Ben Stein

[AsburyPark] antique show

This sounds good

Visitors bring their treasures to annual antiques show

BELMAR — It wasn't necessarily a "Ticket to Ride," but it was a ticket stub
from 1965 when the Beatles performed at Shea Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
Louis Williams of Neptune was one of several people who came to get their goods
appraised at the Antiques by the Atlantic Show at the Taylor Pavilion. The
fourth annual event was sponsored by the Belmar Historical Council.
Armed with more than 35 years' experience as an appraiser and at least five
thick reference books, George Beyers determined if people's "antiques" were
treasures, trash or somewhere in between. Meyers, who lives in Manchester, is a
dealer/appraiser at the Antique Emporium in Point Pleasant Beach.
"We like to see good items. It makes the appraisers feel good and makes the
people who own them feel good," Beyers said. "Some people bring in something
that's worthless — we have to be honest and tell them."

You're far from alone in hating it. Success or not, many people

[AsburyPark] Re: Follow The Leader

2007-10-11 Thread Kevin Brown
I was not shocked or surprised to hear of the high numbers of New
Jersey Residents who have fled the State. I contribute this "Great
Escape" to three very simple things. The highest taxes in the
country, the most corrupt officials in the country and the mass
development using abusive condemnation and eminent domain. When you
tax the people out, rob the people out and throw the people out of
their homes and businesses, what did you expect would happen?

These three problems are controlled by 120 elected officials sent to
Trenton, by the very same people who later wake up and start packing
to move.

Those of us who have not started boxing up our possessions as of yet,
have an opportunity to do something to fix the problem. On November
6 send all 120 incumbents back to private life by voting for some new
Senate & Assembly people who are dedicated to lower spending, smaller
government, less taxes, honest Government and development without the
use of eminent domain for private developer gain.

May God have mercy on New Jersey.

So will they be
drawn here 4 years, 7 or 10 years from now - when things may be more
built up??

City's Virtues to Be Sold in New Global Ad Campaign
By PATRICK McGEEHAN

New York City has historically relied on its own magnetism to draw
visitors from around the country and the world. But now, the home of
Madison Avenue is going to try advertising itself in a big, broad way.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg unveiled the city's first global
advertising campaign yesterday in Times Square. The campaign, which
carries the theme "This is New York City," includes a television ad
that will be the first to promote the city to potential visitors who
live overseas.

It is the latest weapon aimed at hitting the mayor's target of
increasing the number of visitors to 50 million a year by 2015. Last
year, the city drew 43.8 million visitors, more than in any previous
year, according to NYC & Company, the city's tourism promotion agency.

To reach that goal, NYC & Company plans to place billboards in cities
across America and Europe and to broadcast its new commercial in
Britain, Ireland and Spain, on local TV stations in Philadelphia and
Boston, and on the History Channel.

George Fertitta, the chief executive of NYC & Company, said the ad
placements would be worth about $30 million, but would cost the agency
less than $5 million in cash because many of them were arranged
through trades.

The city's contract with Cemusa, a provider of bus shelters and other
structures, gives it hundreds of billboards that it can swap for
advertising space on the streets of several European cities. Much of
the money for the campaign is coming from the city budget.

When he set his tourism target a couple of years ago, Mr. Bloomberg
pledged to increase spending on tourism promotion by $15 million a
year. Historically, NYC & Company received most of its funds from
hotel operators and other companies in the travel and tourism
industries. The agency organized promotions but had never created a
comprehensive campaign on a par with New York State's long-running "I
Love New York" ads.

Mr. Bloomberg said yesterday that it was time to recognize how
important tourism is to the city's economy and to try to increase it
at a time when a weak dollar is making the city more affordable to
foreigners.

"People are shocked to find that what they thought was a very
expensive city isn't all that expensive," Mr. Bloomberg said.

Mr. Bloomberg said the city was competing for tourist dollars against
other destinations, like Las Vegas, that spend far more. The Las Vegas
Convention and Visitors Authority has an annual marketing budget of
$127 million, about $86 million of which goes toward advertising
around the world, according to Vince Alberta, a spokesman for the
authority.

Las Vegas, which uses the slogan "What happens here stays here," also
has a big goal. It hopes to attract 43 million visitors annually by
the end of the decade, Mr. Alberta said.

In contrast to Las Vegas's attractions, what New York has to offer is
more difficult to summarize, city officials said. Daniel Doctoroff,
the deputy mayor for economic development, recounted the difficulty
that the writer E. B. White had in defining the city in his 1949 essay
"Here is New York."

White called it a "concentrate of art and commerce and sport and
religion and entertainment and finance." But Mr. Doctoroff said, "How
do you turn that into a marketing campaign?"

He said the officials decided that in order "to get at New York's
core, you simply have to let New York speak for itself." So the theme
of the ads is simply "This is New York City," and the ads combine
images of the city like the Statue of Liberty, Yankee Stadium and the
Brooklyn Bridge with animated symbols meant to spark a viewer's
imagination.

"This is targeted to the excitement of New York City," Mr. Bloomberg
said. "It's a lot more upbeat than just `I Love New York.'"

Mr. Fertitta of NYC & Company said the ads were intended to "allow
people to see the extraordinary abundance" of the city. "We don't need
to come up with a real slogan that's designed to convince somebody of
something."

The TV ad is set to a remix of Ella Fitzgerald's rendition of "Take
the A Train." The music and the animation were intended to "have you
feel it yourself," said Kevin Roddy, the executive creative director
of BBH, the agency that made the ads. "New York is such an active
city," Mr. Roddy said. "We wanted to do advertising that did something."

I guess it's a matter of taste.
I hate it with a passion.
I gave it a chance, but I still think it's horrible.
And your comment about it being a destination illustrates a point close to my
heart.
In my opinion, living in a culture where a horrible piece of architecture
becomes a
destination saddens me. There's plenty of boardwalk to walk on without an
overwhelming
ugly building to look at.
And Long Branch has plenty of good restaraunts to eat at that existed long
before Pier
Village.
In my opinion, our consumer driven culture presents the wrong values.
I will never view a shopping center as a destination.
But that's just me. I have enough stuff. I don't feel the need to shop when i'm
bored.
I think this says alot about American values. And it bums me out.

So, last night I went to Old Man Rafferty's for the first time.
I loved it.
The decore is dark and elegant, and the staff was really friendly. Not overly
friendly, friendly
with dignity.
Seating was comfortable, and the view of Cookman was cool.
The food was really good. Great menu, interesting selections.
We had fried Calamari as an appetizer, which was just right for 4 people.
My main course was Hanger Steak, and it was a winner. Cooked to perfection.
For dessert, Dulche de Leche cheesecake. This was also excellent.
Thumbs up for me. My 3 friends (my band actually) loved it too.
Afterwards I took them for a walk around the area and they loved it.
Interestingly, they all
began making comparisons to Long Branch and Red Bank. I said nothing.
They all lamented the changes on Broadway in LB, and all three agreed that
while Red Bank
looks nice on the surface, the vibe there is too snooty, the restaraunts too
expensive, and the
lack of parking annoying.
When the conversation turned to Pier Village, I chimed in a bit, and we all
agreed that it's the
worst thing to happen to LB in a long long time.

[AsburyPark] Re: For Jack

2007-10-11 Thread Hinge
Here's one thing to think about.
I wonder if the City is dragging their feet on this because people perceive
there to be a lull
in crime at the moment.
That's the wrong attitude to take.
We still have problems here that need to be strongly combated.
We can't wait for another incident like what happened in Newark to happen here.
Outsiders still fear AP, and the surveillence system will help to quell those
fears, and
change things for the better in the city.
As for a lull in crime...i'm not sure if that's the case.
I think we still have drug dealers riding around on bicycles.
As long as drugs are in this town, so are gangs, and so are the guns.
And the knife wielding bicyclist is something we can not tolerate.
Last night, I saw 2 police cars racing down 1st Ave. at high speed, so
something must've
been going on.
Finally, there is something i've been thinking about lately.
Yes, it's about Library Square Park, so bear with me.
I'm beginning to think that the local drug lords might have enlisted some kids
to do the
vandalizing there. By vandalizing the fountain, they turned out the lights.
Since the
fountain went dark, i've seen an increase in discarded drug bags around the
fountain.
Coincidence? Maybe.
I also think it's terrible that the city is ignoring the lighting in the park.
The central area is completely dark at night.
This needs to change

Facade of Paramount Theatre to be restored by November
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 10/11/07

BY NANCY SHIELDS
STAFF WRITER

ASBURY PARK — Larry Potter and his Landmark Studio crew out of
Pittstown, Hunterdon County, hope to finish up the first phase of
their restoration work on the Paramount Theatre facade by early November.

Madison Marquette, the lead developer of the entertainment portion of
the city's beachfront plan, brought Potter to Asbury Park to first
work on the ornamental ceiling of the 1,500-seat theater in April.

By June, Potter started on the south side of the 1929 building's
facade where his workers are repairing and replacing stone blocks on
the corners and restoring numerous decorative copper and terra cotta
ornamentation including copper sailing ships and lanterns.

"We're trying to get this (south) elevation and arcade in good shape,"
Potter said.

The theater, part of the Convention Hall arena and arcade complex
designed by architects Warren and Wetmore, was placed on the National
Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Potter is taking apart a 12-foot sailing ship with three masts on the
south roof. Another 12-foot ship, which looks like it is slowing
sinking, awaits him on the north side, and two smaller ships are on
the theater's west side.

"The copper is in very good shape," Potter said. "The way we're
pulling it apart is very important on how it goes back together."

Madison Marquette also has begun renovations of the Casino and power
plant at the southern end of the boardwalk and is following a plan to
renovate the boardwalk pavilions.

The work at the Paramount includes reglazing the colorful terra cotta
designs of sea horses and sea monsters, and restoring three types of
lanterns — sconces, barrel lamps and ship lamps.

Send the check, please. We'll even buy some stuff for recreation, with
our names plastered on it.

If I were them, I would of gone back to the old slogan Jewell of the
Jersey Shore.

Then I'd bring in Jewell, the singer, http://www.jeweljk.com/ in the
Paramount. For the summer '08. She can sing.

As soon as Werner hits the lottery, I'll book her.

[AsburyPark] Old Man Rafferty's - My review

2007-10-11 Thread Hinge

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Transparency

2007-10-11 Thread Allan Peterson
What is the job of Jewell? PR or running events? If we hired them for PR,
looking at the website, we hired the wrong company. However, if their role is
only to stage these events, then I guess we are getting what we pay for. I
thing the city needs a PR firm.

I went to Jewell Marketings website. I think I found out why the
idea of a hundred banjo players was marketed for the Apple Festival.
Mr. Jewell teaches banjos. Not only are we paying them for
marketing, were paying for them to have a banjo bash.

One last note, Jewell Marketing is from Fair Haven. Gilmour is a
council member from there or was one. Is that how we pick talent?

sarcasm: "Cool kids have human friends." Always ends the same way,
with me yelling "Off! Now!"

We keep them busy with sports music and CCD. I hate September to
June, because we are on a 7 day per week schedule (no joke). Each
day we have a kid going somewhere. We stop it all for the summer.
No comittments. Just go out and have fun.

As they are growing I know there is going to come a point when they
will be able to hang with their friends more than me (starting to
happen now), so I'm fitting in as much as I can right now. We are
at the point where when we go places as a family, my two older ones
are asking "Can't I just go over so and so's house until you guys
get back?" No. Get in the car.

My daughter is a teenager. I figure once she gets a license, I'm
toast. I make her hang with me now - like it or not.

She's usually pretty good about it once we get where we are going
and I pull the ipod out of her ear.

She's a great kid. So good she suckered us into having the 3 boys.
Thought they'd be as easy as her. As they say, NOT!

Still fun though.

[AsburyPark] Recreation

2007-10-11 Thread denise
You guys are really funny thanks for the laughs. The bottom line is could they
have spent less money the answer is yes. Could they have used the money more
wisely yes but, the money was there and the people were hollering about no
recreation and the water spouts and the pool at the boys and girls club where
not everyone could swim at was not enough. So they got rid of the accident
waiting to happen pool (hole in the ground filled with garbage) and restored it
to a safe water park. So let's take on the next project that the kids can
enjoy and make sure we get more for our money. Anybody remember a pogo stick?

Magic, the title of Springsteen's album will earn Bruce some nice money.

I'll put up $100 towards the cost of YOUR cameras if someone produces
how dollars are allocated to what:

UEZ: amount collected (business breakdown), how spent, where, how much
towards admin.

Grant money: same as above, all sources.

Other donations: same as above

Recreation: same as above. Include amounts contributed bu schools, if any.

others: beach ops which I know does the best they can

Housing: grants, programs, coah,u name it.

Call it the $100 challenge. Anyone can put it up to add to the kitty.

Make it accessible on line and near live and there might be a bonus.

Show the city and state taxpayers the money, AP.

Note: We'll even leave abbott accountability out of the equation.

Good Point, I hope we can get these cost figures. Transparency is
key to good government in New Jersey. Since we had the past
corruption problems, Asbury Park has to double its efforts in its
open access to information. I'm curious, as you know, about the
Mayor's Ball.
