It would not be the first time I see someone with a supposed audiophile setup abuse the loudness setting because of a bass complex. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter Review in Hi-Fi News (UK)
Please people, before making such wildly speculative conclusions about Hifi News reviews or British Hifi magazines in general, just go read the darn review first! The Hifi News reviews are technically sound. Their review process consists of two independent test tracks: one performed by the reviewers by listening and comparing to other similar equipment, and the other by thoroughly measuring the equipment. The measurements are done by Miller Audio Reseach - you can download the measurements for yourself from http://www.milleraudioresearch.com/avtech/. After all that's been done the reviewers try to correlate what they heard through their listening tests with the independently recorded measurement results. It's usually quite amazing how well the listening tests correlate with the measurement results! Here's an excerpt from the Miller Audio measurement results: "Measured via its fixed balanced outputs using both 48kHz an 96kHz/24-bit data, the Transporter emerges as an impressive and slick design that offers an excellent technical performance (low THD and wide S/N), only partially let down by a relatively weak jitter rejection. ...[snip] Measured against this backdrop, the moderate 1000psec jitter is a tad disappointing and, being largely data-induced in nature, looks to be a by-product of the S/PDIF input receiver rather than the DAC itself..." After noting that the Townshend CDP sounded much better than the Transporter the reviewer writes the following: "This outcome might seem surprising in light of the Transporter's mostly exemplary measured performance, but the results of Paul Miller's jitter test may hold the key. While data-induced jitter can make reproduced music sound bland, in Paul's words, the jitter figures recorded here are moderate, rather than debilitating" Then a paragraph later the reviewer writes: "But there is still a puzzle here, in that Stereophile's recent review of the Transporter - published after I'd already begun my assessment - elicited much lower jitter figures, despite using the same measurement hardware, and reached more positive conclusions about its sound quality. This may suggest that our review sample wasn't in the rudest of health but, until we test another, we have to assume that it is representative of the 230V incarnation. However that pans out, the conclusion for now has to be that the Transporter, despite its broad capability, attractive design and fine perfomance on the test bench in most respects, doesn't quite deliver on its promise of high-end sound quality. It simply lacks the resolution to mix it with the best of conventional audio." For those that didn't read the Stereophile review of the Transporter, they can find it here: http://www.stereophile.com/mediaservers/207slim/ The measured jitter results in the Stereophile test was in the region of 250psec - a third of what was measured in the UK version of the Transporter. For comparison purposes, really good DACS and CD players have jitter figures in the region of 20psec. So, in my mind the Hifi News review was objective and very honest - that's something that can't be said of many other Hifi magazines! -- Jaco Jaco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10726 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33276 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Most people aren't scientists, and thus usually don't understand what it is. The main goal of science is do build a model of an observed phenomenon that can be used to predict its behavior under different conditions. Also, when someone bemoans the ignorance of 'science', it is often because they are reading stupidified reports by journalists. I too have a natural scepticism about device and theories of this type. However, I also see that while science has done a good job of explaining the more obvious phenomenon in this world, its success has meant that we have effective reinvented the world we perceive from the coarse building block science affords us. Such reduction to coarseness and rejection of subtlety and the unexplained hinders future scientific progress. The father of classical physics was also an enthusiastic alchemist and that did stop him formulating laws to explain planetary motion or inventing calculus. There is much that is readily observable that science can not explain and no honest scientist would deny that. I beg to differ. There can be no audio quality improvement in adding anything to the audio chain. And there have been many threads on direct connection of a SqueezeBox to an amp. With proper gain matching, there is no safety issue. You may need attenuators, Sean Adams pointed out some high quality and reasonably priced models. Audiophile passive preamps tend to be very pricey for what the do, which is nearly nothing by switching. To be direct. Any truly audible difference among WAV and the lossless formats would have to be an anomaly specific to the audio playback chain. From an audio quality perspective, it should not matter, as you can always transcode if you really think it makes a difference, or even if you just change your mind around which lossless format you want. I suggest that you choose your format based upon other factors, e.g., comfort level with tools, concerns around open vs. proprietary formats, etc. Personally, I would go with FLAC, but I am not an Apple/Itunes/DRM fan and I value the non-proprietary format. -- jeffmeh jeffmeh's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3986 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33641 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I always have the reference sound for the music in my ears, thus as long as it doesn't offend me, and I can hear one or the other detail that I find cool, I am ready. For example, in my home office I have a 7 year old set of Monsoon 700 for my PC - and they sound great, I *enjoy* listening to music through them (and they have the visual cool of being little dipole-radiating planar speakers) even though they were all of $150 at the time. I've got a pair in my small office playing flac files directly through an external, 24-bit sound card. Since I'm playing at mostly low volume in an office setting, I use an equalizer to boost bass and treble response. However, I took them to the beach recently because my beach stereo ($1,000 list Denon CD/DVD system) was in the shop. I used an SB2 to play flac files in a much larger room (700 sq. ft.) at a much higher volume than my office. They handled the task better than the Denon system with higher maximum volume. Although bass response was impressive, I did hook up the Denon sub for a little extra kick. If so, you should be able to get a soundstage that suits your room by adjusting, especially, the 3 kHz region. -- P Floding No, I didn't ABX it. And I won't even if you ask me. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Q: What exactly is break or burn in time?

The misnomer break-in is often used... Actually some of this is real science. A cable is made up of two conductors separated by an insulator, and therefore has capacitance. Dielectric absorption is real, and so is capacitance change with applied voltage. I've seen caps that reduce in value by 50% with just 5v applied across them - the effect is not always small. So, I can believe that at frequencies where the effect of a few pF is significant, applying a DC bias might indeed change the characteristics of the cable. Whether it makes any difference at audio frequencies is highly debatable, though. But what really makes me laugh is the idea that the effect is somehow persistent. It's not; discharge a capacitor to remove the dc bias from it again and it's back to its original state almost immediately. All this would be a lot more plausible too if the dc bias were actually between the conductors that carry the signal. It isn't... -- AndyC_772 AndyC_772's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10472 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=33615 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
