Some of us just had better drugs back then.

I can't grok this thread. I know that vinyl has fans, but I just don't
get it. While badly recorded and engineered CDs are far too common,
there is no way I'm going back.

I listen to more music, and enjoy it more (plus or minus the drugs) than
I ever did with records. There is no way that getting up to flip over an
album is coming back after I've had SqueezeCenter feeding my Transporter.

Come to think of it, ever since I ditched vinyl, I have been hit with
constant upgrade bugs and still perpetually dissatisfied with my
system. Despite the fact that my current system cost many times more
than my modest system used during college, which consisted of a
Systemdek IIX turntable with the mighty Naim Nait 2 integrated
amplifier.

Or this a case of first love being the sweetest?

In your comparo did you level match with an SPL meter and do it blind?

If not, the comparo and your conclusions are w/o merit.

A db diff will be mistakenly perceived as a qualitative diff.

A sighted comparo is invalid due to expectation bias.

2008-04-20 Thread Kris

Back now :)

yep, had a reallly good listen to it. Audio quality is stunning, but
I'm a bit disappointed by the user interface and lack of control
options. No ability to save playlists or shuffle/random.

I had the unit also magically switch itself on quite a few times and
start playing, very strange. I also experienced ALOT of issues with it
playing back files - it would play 4-8seconds and stop, skip the track
and try another. These same files playback fine through Foobar2000 or
the Transporter so I'm not sure what was happening but definitely not
acceptable for a $8950 AUD product. I decided against buying the
Akurate DS until such time as the software issues are ironed out and
there are more user features - its really lacking in this department so
far..

Audio Quality is stunning, and blows away the TP in all aspects in my
opinion.

2008-04-20 Thread ModelCitizen

I've just updated to todays 7.1 nightly. My Transporter looks as though
it's working fine but it's silent. I can't try the test tones as the
Transporter is directly wired into a Bryston 4BSST 300W power amp.

Guess I'd better go back to 7.0.1.

Nice thought, or it could also be because the medium is more involving,
you have to do far more things than pressing a button from your couch...
But this is precisely part of the experience of vinyl. However,
ultimately, the sound that comes out of an LP caresses your ears while
you listen, and that is less fatiguing anyhow.

Interesting thought. Maybe you could try simulating by taking a break
every now and then.

I don't know much about vinyl, but I've noticed that after I replaced
my cd-player with SD and instant access to my entire music library, I
prefer to wait a few minutes in between CD's. This is mostly because
the potentially quick change between styles/sound/genre/etc "feels
strange".

Bob, I haven't compared yet. I heard a high-end Mc system in the store
on Focals and it sounded great. The Krell has a different "house"
sound. I originally bought the Krell due to space considerations and
didn't think the sound of the Mc integrateds was all that good. The
Krell made about 20% of my music sound out of this world - I mean just
delightful. The other 80% I had varying degrees of success. Anything
with compression or boosted highs - wow - the Krell let you know it and
not in a good way. I concluded one needs $5k or greater in the source
before the Krell going to sound good over a large range of recordings.
Basically you need a source that's true to good recordings and fixes or
at least smooths over the bad ones. The TP doesn't fit the bill for
that purpose.

After I bought the MF, it made most of my recordings sound good but I
lost that steller 20% and missed it. I don't care about coloration as
long as it sounds sweet and musical hence my choice to move to the Mc.
Further I'm going to try to TP straight into the amp bi-passing a pre.
I think you're going to be feeling the pain with Theil's just as I
do/did with my Aerials. Both are what I would call detailed speakers.
I've heard Theils sound good with tubes and smooth sources but suffered
in the same way as the Krell caused when they've been connected
staright to an accurate source. I think you made the right choice with
Classe' for your current setup.

But, yeah, any digital input to a good DAC would be ok IMO. The DAC is
where the rubber meets the road. It's going to come down to the DAC.
I'm trying to avoid an outboard DAC but the next one I would try would
be a MF Tri-vista dac. Got to have something to massage the highs!

regards, David

Dear Darren, I agree with you that pops and crackles are inconvenient,
but the truth is that vinyl lovers are more than prepared to live with
those seldom annoyances just for the real and incomparable pleasure
vinyl gives 99% of the time. As with digital you have to live 100% of
the time with fake sound floor and digital sounding lows and highs,
among its other problems.

Playing vinyl has become a pleasurable ritual for me, from the
selection of the album, removing it from the sleeve, looking at the
album art, cleaning it, turning on the TT, brushing the stylus, fixing
the record clamp, lowering the arm, LISTENING, repeating steps to
change to the B side, LISTENING, removing the clamp, the record, and
putting it back into the sleeve...

So yes, maybe vinyl is more difficult and inconvenient, but usually it
is from the most difficult things that we get more pleasure out of. Of
course I dont play vinyl all the time, when I have friends in or my
family is in the room, when I want to play music that was not released
on vinyl or when Im exhausted I have the Transporter, which also gives
me great listening pleasure, but I realized that this pleasure last max
2 hours.

You should give it a try, audio shows are the worst place to audition
equipment, go to your dealer and seat quietly in the audition room, and
then Im sure you will begin to understand why digital just hasnt cut
it...yet..

2008-04-20 Thread duke43j

Hi ModelCitizen. Thanks. I would like to try a Transporter, but I don’t
see how I can borrow one for a couple of days. I really don’t want to
buy one and return it just to try it out. The audio store didn’t have
any other DACs that were in my price range. The Mark Levinson was on
consignment for $1500, but it didn’t have the warm tonality that I
prefer. They did say that they would call me if other DACs came in.

Hi Anne. The interesting part about the 128 Kb/sec streaming files was
that they were Rhapsody “downloads”, not channels. I tried to compare
the Rhapsody tracks with same ones I already had on CD or as Flac. To
my disappointment I discovered that the Squeezebox doesn’t really
download 160 Kb/sec WMA files like you would get if you logged on from
your computer and played them through the computer speakers. It streams
them at 128 Kb/sec. Apparently, the “downloaded” Squeezebox files are
just bookmarks to the files on the Rhapsody website. Do you know if
there is a way to get better quality files from Rhapsody using the
Squeezebox?

Option 3 is the only one that makes sense. AFAIK the output of the
Duet/SB3 is 24-bit. You don't need to "upscale" it. I can't see the
point of the 518 these days TBH. In 1995 - sure.
Anyway, why don't you just try it and see.
Your 5200's are already upsampling to 24/192 internally anyway.

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann
JISCO/UPCI - TACT RCS 2.2X with Good Vibrations S/W - MF X-DAC
V3/X-PSU/X-10 buffer (Audiocomm full mods)- Linn 5103 - Linn Aktiv 5.1
system (6x LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend
Supertweeters, Kimber & Chord cables

IMHO, it is not so so obvious, and a small level difference between 2
sources (would) lead to premature conclusions.

In analog unbalanced mode, the Transporter has a fixed output level.
My CD player, for instance, outputs at a slightly higher level.
Turning the volume knob each time at the right positions was found mind
boggling and not reproductable.
If I had to compare sources levels, I'd prefer to check a signal
standard with VOM or 'scope...and (in my case) insert attenuators where
necessary to perfectly match them.
Then I could compare.

I sold my Micro Seiki 2 years ago, along with my record collection, but
yes, I too miss the "warm distortion" from time to time.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] SBR with Meridian

2008-04-20 Thread bov

I now have a Duet SBR connected via digital to my Meridian DSP5200
speakers - which accept 24 bit input. I also have a Meridian 518 which
I have been using to upscale the 16 bit audio from my old Roku to 24
bit. But now that the SBR outputs 24 bit I wondered if anyone had any
recommendations for what to set? All my music is WMA Lossless.

I have read the forums and set the SBR to output at fixed volume and
all the gain stuff is turned off. I have set the Bitrate limiting to no
limit and the LAME quality level to highest.

So which option should I go for?

1. Should I keep the 518 in the loop and let it assume the SBR is
outputting 16 bit so that it takes those first 16 bits and upconverts
with signal shaping to 24 bit?

2. Should I set it all to 24 bits

3. Should I take the 518 out and connect from SBR to DSP5200's direct?

I'm currently leaning towards the first option?

Any other settings or tweaks I should make?

Let me understand correctly. You mean that digital needs an alternative
speaker placement than analogue?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] 2 weeks without LP's!

2008-04-20 Thread morris_minor

Oh yes! I need my vinyl fix! Just the physical act of carefully removing
an LP from its sleeve and placing it on the turntable is pleasurable.
Could never say that for a CD (which is why I've taken to my Squeezebox
so easily - and will be installing a Duet later today :o).

And the sound - I agree, it is less fatiguing. Even with, perversely,
FLACs of vinyl . . .

It all comes down to, IMO, psychology and the way our brains interpret
signals from our senses. Which is why audiophilia is such a can of
worms!
