Giving a wide range of different types of remotes! The only function I can't get to work is "Display" - this seems to be linked to timing signals on the LCD display rather than just a resistor ladder affair. The MD registers the pressing if DISPLAY becase it works when titling, but ignores it when trying to display remaining time etc. unless I use the Sony remote. "End Search" - It's there somewhere but I don't know where. "Record" functions differently in that it goes into Record-Pause when selected via the remote interface rather than straight record, IMHO this is better anyway! Hmm, I don't know... The IR interface is sort of 'standard'. I mean, the remote control code of manufacturers haven't changed a lot. The SLink/A-Control interface found on Sony home-decks is Sony's 'standard' sollution for connecting it to a PC. These 'sollutions' are somehow standard. > I think the best solution for *existing* portable MD would be a cable that > connected the RS232 hotsync on the Palm to the 4-pin remote connector on the > MD. >There is your answer ... MD connected to a Palm Pilot I have a Palm III and various MD equipment. At this point, the *only* common connection is IR, specifically, the Palm with send/receive IR and my JE520 and MDS-PC2 will receive it. The Palm will send/receive RS232 and, with the addition of the CAV-50C RS232/Slink interface, so will the MDS-PC2. But I think it would be better to concentrate on the portables, rather than these home-type decks. I think the best solution for *existing* portable MD would be a cable that connected the RS232 hotsync on the Palm to the 4-pin remote connector on the MD. Two of the 4 pins are control, which is normally implemented by a resistor ladder and pushbuttons, but I've seen PC interfaces that use CMOS analog switches. The other two are data from the MD to the LCD (or the label printer). Looks like an opportunity to use a PIC single-chip microprocessor to make the connection. I'm sure that it would be possible to write a Palm program similar to the PC program Sony supplies with the MDs-PC2. Might make me think of replacing my MZ-EP11 player with a portable recorder! - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

True, large keys are better for this but even though there is 1's of people who touch type, there are many many more who do not. Afraid you are probably in the population minority at the moment. The "hunt and peck" approach would surely be faster then the scroll wheel on the R50 ... I got pretty good with the scroll wheel but for most titling my combo of the 510 and Martins Winremote is just perfect. > 3) It would be standard When have Sony been worried about standards. ? :) > 4) There are PC keyboards that are as small as the Ericsson one. > etc. etc. etc. I'd be happy if you could point me towards one ... MD connected to a Palm Pilot ... image the possibilities. Drag and drop moves, titling, editing, timer record ... Yes a PalmV is expensive, but I get the feeling that the type of person who gets seriously into MD is also likely to want a PDA. Re: MD: Micro keyboard for titling?
At 3/1/00 4:31 AM, Guy Churchill increased the world's knowledge by typing: >I may not have made it perfectly clear, but I was referring to >portable recorders NOT home decks (which I do prefer to see PS/2 port or >some type of PC comms link - USB preferred). Didn't I recently see something about Kenwood experimenting with adding FireWire to a MD deck? I believe their goal was to have it completely replace the current optical digital connections. Imagine the possibilities of putting such an interface on all audio and video equipment. (Many video cameras already have such an interface.) You could connect your computer to your A/V setup letting you do amazing stuff. For example, use the computer to title tracks, dump MP3s DIRECTLY to MD, use MD Data disks to hold and display pictures on computer, TV, or any other viewing device, or have the computer scan video signals for certain topics and have the VCR (or DVD RAM) record the show, or record that show you wanted after the football game *finally* ends, etc. FireWire would also make a great independent standard. No more "I have to buy a Sony to match the rest of my system." Does anyone know if something like this is coming down the pike? Re: MD: Micro keyboard for titling?
> Just add a PS/2 interface to the portable and the problem is solved > They did it for the home-decks, why not for portables? AFAIK the keyboard draws power ... and although it maybe not much, it might make a difference ... also for field recordings I'd rather carry around a mini keyboard (like the Ericsson one I described) then carry a 101 (or even 88) key keyboard in my MD pouch. (Plus it'd double up duties for my mobile phone SMS, if compatible). I may not have made it perfectly clear, but I was referring to portable recorders NOT home decks (which I do prefer to see PS/2 port or some type of PC comms link - USB preferred). Because Ericsson has joined with Psion to develop cross platform communications, perhaps Sony should be looking at joining them for products like this. (Similarly Nokia are working with Palm, Sony could form an alliance with them). Or maybe we should wait for WAP to take off. For those who don't know what WAP is. Nokia describes it as: WAP is the gateway to a new world of mobile data. It provides a universal standard which enables users to easily access Web-based interactive information services and applications from the screens of their mobile phones. These include both consumer and corporate solutions, like e-mail, corporate data, news, sports and information services, entertainment, TV/movies, travel, leisure, culture, medical care, electronic commerce transactions and banking services. This is only the beginning. Nokia & WAP Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) provides a universal open standard for bringing Internet content and advanced Value Added Services to mobile phones and other wireless devices. As such, WAP is at the heart of Total Connectivity usage. So who knows MD and WAP .. the way of the future ?? Plug your mobile into the MD ... dial CDDB WAP ... download the song titles to the MD unit ... presto .. done for probably less then a 30 sec mobile phone call which costs someone between $0.05 and $1.00 (totally dependant on service provider, time of day etc etc). (Yeah, Yeah , I know this has some seriously flaws, but it's only an idea !!) Cheers GC PS; I think the women would find the mini keyboard a lot more sexier then your standard common garden variety 101 keyboard. :) :) hahahaha - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
