No, they require it in case they catch you in the act of propagating

I would trust it, after all our lovely government, and half the mass marketers

Roger

You need to login as root to do this.

Use your favourite editor (If you use KDE there's a simple one on your
task bar)
Navigate to the directory /etc/rc.d - there you should see the file
called
rc.local -

Open that file and add the line above to the very end.

You could also do this from a terminal using Midnight Commander - in
many
ways this wee utility makes navigation easier as you can see the
directory
structure as you move about. If you've used Norton Commander from MSDOS
you'l already be most of the way there - But remember that utilities
like
this are inherantly dangerous particularly when you are acting as root.

Cheers

Re: [newbie] Can't browsing to internet

2000-09-17 Thread Greg Stewart

In Kppp, you shoul *only* need to specify "Dynamic IP Address".
remove everything else.

> Tab Gateway : 192.168.0.1

This is *only* for your internal network (your ethernet cards that connect
linux and windows) *not* for an external interface. The gateway address will
be assigned by the DHCP server at your ISP when you get an IP address (This
is why you specify "dynamic"). So, make sure you don't use this in Kppp.

If Kppp pseters you for a DNS address, give it 202.134.0.155. It may be
changed when you dial up, but that's OK.

So, in all, the only information you should have to give Kppp is your
username, password, phone number to dial, select "Dynamic IP", and
*possibly* that DNS IP above. Leave everything else blank.

Try that and let me know what happens.

Brian,

There is no uninstall. You will have to either overwrite the existing
partition with an upgrade or completely reformat the the drive. First of
all, is there any data that you want to save or back up?
Other than removing Mandrake 6.0, do you want to upgrade, and/or
reformat?

If you want to just remove Mandrake 6.0, you should correct your
partition table.
Insert a DOS boot disk in your floppy drive. Reboot your computer. At
the A:\> prompt, type in:

fdisk /MBR

Run fdisk again and reformat your partition.

Hi Mark,

fine for my purposes and I've gotten quite comfortable with it (both 1.0.17

Re: [newbie] Uninstall Mandrake 6.0

2000-09-17 Thread Mark Weaver

What is it that you're trying to do to uninstall Mandrake 6.0? There
really isn't anything to do persay except the format the partitions that
6.0 is already occupying and then do what ever you want to do with that
space. If you intend to install a newer version of Mandrake in that space,
then as I said all you have to do is during the install process just
instruct the installer at the proper time to format that space and that's
all there is to it.

So, I just sent the above a couple of minutes ago, and decided to give the
above directions a whirl myself. I opened Konsole, found my way into the
/etc/rc.d/ directory (yes, this is still a challenge for me, like I said in
another post, I'm as newbie as they come), and then it said rc.local wasn't a
directory, so I go find it through KFM (which is almost like a loss to me; I'm
trying really hard to learn to use the terminal window), and I see its a shell

I've had the same problem, and while I haven't had a chance to try out this
solution yet, here is John Rye's reply to me the other day (thanks again, John!)

Hi, Joan, it might be because 4.73 does not have the 128 encryption? And
4.75 has it as part of the package? Don't know for sure, just guessing.

2000-09-17 Thread pungki

Hi..
Im' trying to make a bootdisk. But when I try mkbootdisk --device/dev/fd0
2.2.15-4mdk, I get an error message :

mount : /dev/fd0 already mounted on /tmp/mkbootdisk busy.

Then I try to umount fd0 (umount -f /dev/fd0), and I get an error message like
this :
umount2 : Device or resource busy
umount : /dev/fd0 : device busy

So, I can't make a bootdisk. I've enable supermount. Should I disable it ? Or
maybe there is another solution for this error ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [newbie] Athlon thunderbird & ka7-100

2000-09-17 Thread dwyatt

As any overclocker will tell you, results vary. I am overclocking a
PIII-500e to 750MHz. I have zero stability problems. It was no extra work
to reach this level of overclocking. I am using a stock Intel HSF. All I
had to do was set my front side bus to 150MHz, and BAM, my 225 dollar (at
the time) CPU was performing faster than a 600 dollar CPU.

In the past I've not been able to reach as high an overclock, but I ALWAYS
avoid any stability problems, by dropping the FSB/multiplier until the
system was stable.

[newbie] Another problem with Zip drive

Hi

This is the my first email in this mailing list. I just tried to configure
my Zip drive (100 MB)

When I typed "modprobe ppa" ( i knew this command from Linux mandrake 7.0
installation guide) at the console prompt I got the following message:
"Note: /etc/conf.modules is more recent than
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/modules.dep
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/scsi/ppa.0:init-module:Device or resource busy
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/scsi/ppa.0:insmod/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/scsi/ppa.
0 failed
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/scsi/ppa.0:insmod ppa failed

Then I failed to mount my zip drive (connected through the parrallel port)

Does anybody know how to fix this module problem ???

Thanks in advance

Re: [newbie] xfree86

2000-09-17 Thread abramo

Go to init3, make sure there is not an X running, use rpm -Uvh foo.i586.mdk.rpm If
the packages won't go you may have to use the --nodeps flag and possibly even it and
the --force flag. It would look like this:

rpm -Uvh --force --nodeps foo.i586.mdk.rpm

I've used the binaries from xfree86 more successfully then the rpms from mandrake
though. Just go here:

ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.0.1/binaries/Linux-ix86-glibc21/

read the Install.txt and be sure to use

sh Xinstall.sh -check

so you know for sure which verison you need.

[newbie] Sound Mixer settings lost a reboot

2000-09-17 Thread mdk-newbie-g

I've recently come back to Mandrake after trying several other distros.
I'm using 7.0 as I prefer the menu design over those in the newer
release. I've found that Sound Mixer (in KDE) settings are reset back to
default when I reboot the machine which is just a tad annoying. When
merely restarting KDE my settings hold, but a full reboot generates the
reset. Has anyone else found this to be the case or know of a
configuration setting I need to tweak? Many thanks

What Phoenix did was a stroke of genius at the time.

They got a group of people to reverse engineer the IBM BIOS, and from
that produce a 'data sheet' of what a BIOS chip should do.

They then got another group of people (who had to sign a document
swearing that they had never had any contact with the IBM chip, and
faced dire consequences if they had!) to read the data sheet, and write
their own BIOS based on that data sheet.

That was how they circumvented the copyright legalities on the IBM BIOS.

There was another such stunt pulled for PGP a few years ago. PGP was so
powerful that the US government classed it as munitions! Philip
Zimmerman (the author of PGP) was in and out of court for years.
Anyway, because of it's munitions classification, export outside of the
USA was illegal.

Now, due to the wording, it transpired that the ban only applied to
electronic copies. They were able to bypass these legal restrictions by
reverse engineering, printing out the source code (several thousand
pages), mailing this to a company in another country and getting them to
re-enter and recompile the code.

All good clean fun...

Ozz.

Re: [newbie] ttyS5 modem problem

2000-09-17 Thread markOpoleO

Ok here what i tryed, i noticed that it only goes up to ttyS0-ttyS3 in
Mandrake 7.1..BUT my modem is on COM 5 in windows..which would be ttyS4
right? I tryed changing it in windows but it still goes back to com 5. I
also tryed doing the instructions with modem that says: #./MAKEDEV ttyS4
,it does not give a error or anything after i do that but does not show up
in Internet setup still. Any other Ideas? I noticed in the /dev folder
there WAS a ttyS4 listed but it said there was no files or something like
that.

BTW, the modem i have is the new PCI Zoom Model#2920

Odd! well then the thing to do is check devices and see if the modem is
listed and what ttys? it is on. Except at the moment I can't remember
where to go. A little help here. What is the best way to check

My guess is that things aren't as strange as you suspect...the password
error you are getting is just that, whatever you think the password isn't what is
set
up on the mail server. The reason you can send mail is that SMTP is a non
authenticated
protocol and hence doesn't require password authentication. (there is an
authenticated
variant but most mail systems use the plain vanilla implementation)

Re: [newbie] Athlon thunderbird & ka7-100

2000-09-17 Thread GAPrichard

Newbies,
I want to clarify a couple of points, given all of the discussions since
my posting: having done modest overclocking (15%) I found it to be more
trouble than it was worth overall (that is, the overclocking wasn't worth the
time and effort spent solving instability problems a year and a half later).
Yes, I liked the free performance. People seem very adament on this topic,
and whether they have any experience seems secondary. Personally, I don't
love or hate any group, overclockers included. I was reporting my direct
experiences in response to a question. And let me add a further point in
response to the equipment destruction messages I saw a while back: after I
reset my CPU back to stock and thus cured my instability problems my system
has remained stable and alive for almost 6 months now [I'm using it to
compose this message].
Yes, as a computer technician I ran into overclocking, but I have not
personally seen any distroyed equipment. I have heard of equipment damage
happening. Likewise I have heard of people overclocking 25% and operating
for years with no problems. I do not know people from either group. My own
experience was completely stable operation with 15% overclocking, increasing
instability after a year and a half *, successfully restoring my system, and
continuing correctly clocked, again stable, with no failures after another
nearly six months [no failures in the two years overall]. * a possibility
that I had never heard of and that hadn't occured to me, hence my original
posting to this group (equipment death I had heard of, but not just decline).
And, yes, I have been in computers long enough to remember S-100 systems,
and I briefly studied them before buying a Z80 based Osborne, the machine
they invented the term lugable to describe. It screamed at 4 MHz. [Since it
was basically not graphic as we now understand the term, it really was a
decently performing suitcase sized machine.] I also remember the
wonderfulness of having to change ROMs and regenerate the CP/M kernel when
making a hardware change. They had you on that one. Much like Apple and
their ROMs -- Apple was able to successfully keep any clones out of existance
because they had the copyright on the basic graphic routines in the ROMS,
upon which the operating system was built [i.e. the ROMs were indespensible
to doing what an Apple did, and nobody successfully developed a workaround].
IBM was trying to do something similar, but Phoenix reverse engineered (first
successful (in court) reverse engineering ever?) the motherboard BIOS chip.
That act began a chain of events that resulted in PCs as we know them. Have
any of you wondered about the "reverse engineering" clause in so much of
Windon't's software? I'm sure others here on newbie could tell more of this
and other things that led to the Free Software Foundation and eventually to
Linux as we know it.

[newbie] Mail Server Problem - Very strange

2000-09-17 Thread Carolina Kohler

Hi,
it's me again, it seems as if I must have a new problem every day.
Today it's something really strange. I have 2 mail (pop3) accounts on the same
mail server - The one I normally use doesn't work, it always says WRONG
PASSWORD, when I try to receive any mail (though it's OK for sending - SMTP -)
and I'm absolutely sure I type it right. The other account works OK (it's from
where I'm sending this message now) both to send and to receive.
Really strange
Any idea?

In Kmail I can't receive mail, I haven't changed the settings at all and now
it says INCORRECT PASSWORD, I've checked it many times and it's ok, so
what's happening???
Does anyone know what it could be?
Ah! the same thing happens in W98/Outlook, so I guess it's not MY problem,
but something to do with the mail server. I supose I'll have to wait until
someone repairs it.

I'm sending this message with another mail account.

I really like Pronto (http://www.muhri.net/pronto). Nice perl client
that supports multiple pop/local accounts, using the GTK widget set. Nice
installer as well - if you already have perl installed, run the
ProntoInstaller.pl script on the download page and it installs the additional
packages it needs.

To all:

Recently I have noticed several threads regarding AOL for Linux. Not
that I would consider using AOL, my opinion of AOL is not a very good
one, but these threads have interested me this morning. I saw this
email stating that all links to files have been removed and it got me
wondering if my internet searching abilities are as good as I
thought. So, I did a little searching and found some very good hits.
And I just downloaded this "gamera" for linux, about 10 megs. you
will find it here on this page:
http://www.techpages.com/linux.htm
Hopefully this will help all of you out. I have no idea about this
software, Im going to look into it shortly. Give it a looksy and
maybe you will find what you have been looking for on your journey.

That is rather surprising. I know linux likes to use as lots of ram when it's
available and the more available, the more it will frequently use. I have one
box with 128m and another that I just bought w/256m. Both frequently show
using much more than 64m, but almost never use any swap. Are your running
xfce? Or some other small wm? I've really gotten to like Blackbox. Very
small footprint and quite fast and functional.

[newbie] Modem and Conection Problems SOLVED

2000-09-17 Thread Carolina Kohler

Hi everybody,

Last week I said I would explain how I solved my modem and conection problems
in case it could help someone, as I've seen there's so many people with this
tipe of problems.
Well, I don't know "exactly" what my problems where, but I guess something to
do with IRQ, ports, modem, etc. settings. First I didn't have Kppp in my
Linux, I didn't even know it existed and I was trying to connect using ppp0 or
something like that. Now I have Kppp and it works fine.
PC:
-My modem is: Zoom VoiceVideoFax Modem 56K - Internal ISA/PnP (NOT a winmodem)
on ttyS1 (COM2 in W98)
-Pentium 133 Mhz
-2 Hard drives of 1,2 Gig. each (one with Linux Mandrake 7.0 and the other W98)
-RAM 24 Mb.
-Mouse: 3 button serial Genius on ttyS0 (COM1 in W98)
-Printer: Epson Stylus Colour 440

First of all, BIOS settings:
Go into BIOS with Del at boot.
Go to Power Management Setup:
- Set MODEM use IRQ: 3
Go to PNP/PCI Configuration:
- IRQ 3 assigned to: PCI/ISA PnP
Go to Integrated Peripherals:
- Onboard Serial Port 1: Auto
- Onboard Serial Port 2: Auto
ESC
F10 and Exit
Reboots automatically.

Now Kppp Configuration:
Go to Conections:
- Add
- Give a name to your conection
- Select the conection you've just created and click Edit
The following is all inside the Edit of the conection you've just created:
Go to mark, ( the first tab on the left, I'm not sure of the english name of
this)
- Enter conection Name
- Phone Number of your ISP
- Authentication: PAP (unless you have to use something else like CHAP, etc.)
Go to IP Address:
- Check IP set by server (unless you have a static IP)
Go to Name Servers:
- Enter the Domain Name of your ISP
- DNS, click on Add and enter the primary DNS of your ISP and then do the same
with the secondary DNS
Go to Gateway:
- Select Default gateway
- check default path to gateway
OK and back to the Kppp main configuration.

Go to Serial Device:
- Modem Device: /dev/ttyS1 (or whatever serial port you have it set to)
- Flow Control: CRTSCTS
- End of Line: CR/LF
- Conection Speed: 115200
- leave the "use file block" selected (I don't know what this is, I just left
it how it was by default )
- Modem timeout: 120 secs.
Go to Modem:
- Wait for busy line: 0 (default)
- Modem Volume: Low (I guess you can set it how you like, but when I had it on
High, when starting the conection it hanged while "setting modem volume", so I
set it on Low and now it's OK)
Go to ppp:
- pppd timeout: 120 (I don't know what this means, but I set it the same as the
modem timeout)
- check the following options: Show clock in title-bar, Disconect when closing
X Server and Minimize window when conection.

And that's about it, at least for me now it works OK. If someone has any
questions you're welcome to ask, I don't promise I can help because I'm very,
very newbie in this, but with all these problems I've had I've learnt quite a
lot, so there's always a good side on everything, even if it looks like a
terrible problem. If everything had worked OK right from the begining I
wouldn't have learnt anything new.

I hope these settings can help someone.
Cheers,
Carol^

I have used KMail and that worked okay, but the font was hard to get
right. I was, in that time, still figuring out Sendmail which I never got
to work (switched to Qmail with help from friends).
I have also tried Balsa and Mahogany, never got them beyond crashes and
core dumps. People I know are nuts about Mutt.

Mutt and Pine are text-based and therefor fast and light, fast and very
versatile.

Since I am against spreading negativity, I will not speak about netscape
mail.

[newbie] Dam - I stuffed it again

2000-09-17 Thread John Rye

I not sure how (or when) I did but I've lost the content
of /etc/sysconfig/network, and I think it's responsible
for these bootup/shutdown errors showing in /var/log/netconf.log:

  Executing some Sysv init scripts
Executing: /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S50inet restart
* /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S50inet: [: =: unary operator expected
* /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S50inet: [: =: unary operator expected
> Stopping INET services: [ OK ]
* /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S50inet: [: =: unary operator expected
> Starting INET services: [ OK ]

In the process of this stuffup I also lost my local host and domain
names.

Am I correct (or even close to the mark) with this assupmtion?
