Re: [newbie] Book question.
i'm a big fan of books. first, i recently discover "the linux cookbook" do a google search, the whole text is available on the internet. it's great. second -- 'linux in a nutshell' from o'reilly. this book is the bomb. if you get no other, this is the one. it has most all the commands in alphebetical order. it also assumes you have an idea of what you are doing. it explains each command and all the opions for it, but assumes you know which command you are looking for. it also has section on KDE, GNOME, package managers, LILO and other things. third -- 'linux command instant reference' from Sybex. it's organized in sections, such as archiveing, text files, audio, etc, so if you know what you are trying to do you can just flip to that section. just my opinons i could be full of it =) adrian Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] applixware
well, I'm not talking from experience here but, my understanding is that open office is the u... i can't think of the word it's StarOffice, at least originally, but the code is open to the public to modify and improve. so -- star office is only modifyed and worked on by Sun, but open office is worked on by anyone who wants to get involved. am i right about that?? i have the files to install the latest open office, but i haven't done it or tried it, simply because i have become attached to applix already and don't feel like having to go thru another conversion. by that i mean that my #1 use for my computer is writing, i am a writer. under windows i used WordPro. when converting to linux finding a word processor was my greatest need. at the time i didn't know about open office. i tried applix, star office 5.2, koffice and abiword. i decided on applix and now all my writing is in that format. if you are still looking for something you should check open office. it may be really good. i think star office is getting better & better, and open office might be even better simply because it is open to anyone to contribute. it's free and you've nothing to loose. adrian Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] applixware
i'm a bit late on this thread =) i've been using Applix for just over a year now. for the most part i love it. a few bugs, but i've figured out the work arounds. one disclaimer tho... one thing i don't care about is MS compatability. i haven't opened a Word file in months, and an X-Hell file doesn't even exist on my computer, so i can't say just how reliable the MS compatability is. if you don't mind spending money -- i paid $50 for it, which is about the limit of what i will pay for software -- i think it's good. of course StarOffice has gotten much better with the 6beta version. tho i haven't used it a whole lot, just played with it to see how it had changed. adrian ps -- there is a review of Applix with screen shots which i wrote on my website: http://204eastsouth.com/linux04.htm Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Failures in 8.1 compared to 7.2
*hahahaha* oh gosh don't even get us started on that one. i had to go back to 7.2 also because 8.1 will not even make it thru the install program on one of my computers. in all fairness i have to confess that it installed just fine on my second computer. every once in a while i try to install it again (i have an extra partition where i'm trying to put it). so far 7 failures. ugh. i think Mandrake is entering the Micro$oft phase of their development. you know, the point where you have to upgrade your hardware everytime you upgrade your software. i love Mandrake, i really do but 8.1 is just a mess. as to your question "what's gone wrong" -- i wish i knew. just stick with 7.2 -- i've decided not to try fixing what isn't broken. probably i will not mess with a new MDK until 9.1 comes out. However, perspective is incredibly important at moments like this. > And it Ain't Mandrake's distro that is the problem nor the compiler that > comes with the distro. i totally agree. there is just one problem with this however. what is that you ask? it's the 15% and 5%. as a tech myself i always blame the user. every time someone ask a question on this list, the people on the list blame the user. the problem with the issue being the user 80% of the time is that 20% of the time its something else. i'd like everyone to try thinking about that. i tried for the 7th time in install 8.1 on my second computer. i used the same CDs which installed perfectly on my first computer the first time. 7th attempt -- and still locked up halfway thru the install and i had to reboot. thank god for 7.2 everyone repeat after me 20% of the time it's NOT the user 20% of the time it's NOT the user 20% of the time it's NOT the user 20% of the time it's NOT the user 20% of the time it's NOT the user Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] CDRW compatability
really? hmmm. i'll have to check on those then. i had a philips but it died. it was an older model and a SCSI, but worked real good, until death that is. and i saw that some other sony model numbers close to the 160 worked (they are on the mdk list) so i was going from that point. i will check out the plextor and yamaha options. thanks Tom, and to others who have replied to me on this topic. adrian In a message dated 9/11/01 7:30:14 PM Mountain Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: > > is anyone out there using either of the following CD RWs with > > Mandrake 7.2? > > > > Philips PCRW1208 > > Sony CRX160E > > > > i'm looking at buying one of those. they are not listed in the > > compatable hardware list at the mandrake site. both are IDE. > > > > thanks > > adrian > > IDE is fine, buy a Plextor or Yamaha, don't buy a Sony, Philips > isn't a good idea either > -- > Tom Brinkman Galveston Bay Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] The myth that is "Mandrake Support".
well, you could use mandrakeexpert.com if the web site worked anyhow. i've been trying to fix a problem for 2 days now and the web site locks up my browser everytime i try to submit my question. i like mandrake & their product -- but sometimes good help *is* impossible to find. of course, i'm not aware of any other OS developer that has "support" either. i've tried IBM and M$ in the past. nothing worth a hill of beans. sign me -- "mine is broken too" Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] GRUB stage 1, freeze
howdy. got a bit of a problem, hope someone can help me out. i'm using 7.2, the install was getting a bit large as i keep experimenting and breaking things, so i decided to reinstall. i formated / and did a fresh install. changed to ReiserFS for / -- i am currently using Reiser for all my other partitions and wanted to get that in line. all is good, reboot. go into windows to make sure it is still ok, that boots fine. boot into linux and go to installing other things. make some messes as i can't get Eterm to install. reboot a few times, all is good. then, i reboot, i get stage 1 then nothing. ok, i'm checking the grub documentation on my other computer. it list error messages, but i'm not getting any, just "stage 1" and freeze. so i try to boot from my boot disk i had just made in the install. well, it doesn't work. me not happy. *sigh* me figures me messed something up, so me does total install all over again, formated / again. this time try to boot after install. same thing. "stage 1" freeze. however, the boot disk i made this time does work, and i made a few more, so i can get to the system. it works fine, i am burning a CD even now. i was using 7.2 and GRUB on this same box before -- only differences: 1. / was ext2 not reiser (but the reiser booted fine at first, could that be the problem?) 2. my ide cdrom, hdc, seems to be dead. i booted from it for the first install, but then it "died" and i had to boot from a floppy and use the scsi cd burner to do my install. i don't know if either of those would have anything to do with the problem, but otherwise my system is exactly the same. help? thanks to all Adrian ps -- yes it is 0453 local time. i have been working on this since 1800. time for bed. Re: Fw: [newbie] Use of Linux
i can't resist this one. to add further to John's response, why are you having to su so much? the only time i have to su is to install programs. i just tried this, i can su & type in a password in 4 seconds. you do this so often that it results in a "fair amount of lost time"? i'm sure i'm not the only one who would be curious to know what you are doing to that computer. Day One: I hate M$. I think I'll try Linux. Day Two: This crap sucks. It isn't Windows. Windows is not Linux, Linux is not Windows.
