Re: [newbie] Hp Deskjet 722C
I had the same question just the other week and as I understand it the 722c is a winprinter. Kind of like a winmodem. It used windows resources to operate and there for does not work on linux. I have bee told that someone is backwards engineering the windows driver and porting it to linux however I have not been able to find it. I was luck and had an older HP 694c that works fine. A little slower and not as good quality as the 722c but it works with linux. Brett W. Actually it will print only in B&W for now, but will work soon in color... go to www.freshmeat.net and search there. The problem is that DeskJet 700+, and some others use their own propeierty protocol (This sux) and not the usual protocol like DeskJet 69x etc... I am having trouble setting up my Hewlett Packard DeskJet 722C printer on Mandrake 7.0. I go into DrakConf, Printer Configuration, Local, and then it sees it on lp0, but from there I do not know what to do. I have tried all of the different deskjet printers that are listed but none of them work. Where do I get the right driver to make this thing work, and how do I install the driver. And, further, go to http://www.httptech.com/ppa/ The driver works for files output by ghostscript and makes the files to be sent to the printer. It uses what HP calls "Performance Printing Architecture", a system that puts more of the calculation for printing on the CPU and allows the printer to have les hardware. HP developed drivers for Windows, and left it at that. They ALSO decided that they would keep the protocols secret. What is displayed on this web page is what someone could intuit from looking at the files sent to the printer, and it works for the 720 (710), 820, and 1000 series in B&W if you also use the ghostscript filter and you have the printer direct connected to the linux machine. This case is different, since NT knows how to handle the printer and also what to do with incoming files bound for the printer Civileme Civileme wrote: http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor is where you will find additional links for the HP722C. Re: [[newbie] HP Deskjet 722C]
Yep, bought an Apollo Customer Support said there's a Linux Driver but they can't tell you what it is because they don't support Linux. 500C should work fine. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to try it. The internal mechanism and the external feed tray were mounted in such a way that paper would not feed. (One to the extreme right and the other to the left so that paper could not even be shoved in. Since it was all plastic, there was little chance of correcting it. I didn't bother paying the shipping to send it back, just gritted my teeth and took the loss of $78 plus $42 freight as the thing went where it belonged To the junkyard. RE: [[newbie] HP Deskjet 722C]
Just a quick FYI to all who have the 722C printer... It doesn't work under DOS just by itself. In other works, you can't just dup ASCII to it and have it print. It need a driver of some sort even to do something as simple as that. I've tried printing from EDIT at just a DOS 6.22 prompt with no success. And I made sure it was set to LPT1. If I'm mistaken someone please correct me for mine and everyone else's info. Re: [newbie] HP Deskjet 722C
Select Postscript printer. Linux has only a very basic driver for the 722 (no color) which is sort-of a WINPrinter. Just use the postscript driver and let windows use its driver for the major work. On the windows machine, make sure you have shared out the printer both through the "Network Neighborhood" settings and by right-clicking the printer icon and setting it to shared. Finally, make sure you have a good copy of printtool from the Mandrake Update site, and the latest Samba. Many things, including the print script for samba and the filter routines, are broken in previous versions (including RedHat 6.0, where it began). I see the lights on the hub blinking, and I can ping 192.168.1.3 so I know they are communicating. Now I DO have the same printer shared on my NT Server box(KB01NT, 192.168.1.1) I know, NT should at as the print server, but I've gotta be different. I have tried configuring the printer to go through the NT box to no avail, figuring that since the printer is shared, it could somehow be found. I guess what I'm trying to ask is Does anybody know if a driver is available for the HP 722C in case that is the problem, AND/OR can anyone tell from the rambling information above if I am going about this in the right way?
