You can see this by booting from a floppy and trying to access to the hard disk. The only way you can solve this is to have someone who knows the system password to help you. Hey, Cody, I'm not sure that I am reading your post correctly, so please help me out and forgive if I am way off Are you trying to run Linux without installing to your hard drive, or to recover data off your hard drive, or what? I'm confused with your purpose, that's all. :-) Recover data Since I am not sure what you want to do, you could take this for what it's worth. Knoppix is designed to run off the CD-ROM drive. If this portable beastie is blessed with a CD-ROM drive, you could run that and never really have to use your hard drive for it. There are some caveats...and they would be big ones for you: Knoppix, at least a modern copy, is going to need lots of RAM. That's where all your important directories and files that need to loaded are put (like /home, for instance). It essentially divides up and uses your RAM memory as if it was your hard drive. Once you turn of your computer, all is lost (though you could opt to save configs to the hard drive so that you wouldn't have to re-config each time you boot-up...your choice, there.) If I read your post correctly, your laptop only has 48 MB of RAM. Did I? That's not enough for this. If I understood that your P1 refers to a Pentium Classic, a P233 MHz is going to be the bottom end and still be able to run KDE or Gnome. At least this is what I experienced on a test PC running a P233 with 128 MB RAM, using Knoppix 3.2. If ram is limited, you may want to take a look at http://www.linx-bbc.org and their verstion 2.1. It can run on a lot less ram and has all the essential tools you would need. Barry Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

I have not seen any of these adapters in the store but they seem to be all over ebay for $5 to $10. That should allow you to plug your laptop hard drive into a desktop and make the data recovery as simple as drag and drop in windoze or ML. Note if your laptop HDD is in a carrier you may have to remove it from the carrier to make the adapter work but thats just a extra 4 or six screws. I dont know if this is the answer that you were looking for but this method has worked for me in the past. [newbie] Laptop Question
Ok, scenario: I have a laptop with Windoze 95 on it. It's partition is "Pri DOS". I cannot read this from a boot disk and can not log into Windoze (PC/DACS disabled my login after windoze fudged up after installing a PC CARD (network)). I tried removing the hard drive and installing it on my computer, but the cable is a different size. It's 48 MB with a P1. My question is: how do i get onto the drive, send my files over the network, and format without installing a full version of Linux. Remember: I don't want anything to be written to the drive, so i need a version that can either run across a network or from a disk. One kink: I use only CD-R's. I never use CDRW's. Mostly b/c other CDRoms won't read them an my desktop doesn't have a burner, but my g/f's does. So I just use CDR's which the desktop reads fine. Femme, Might not be a burner problem. An old Toshiba laptop of mine refused to read CDs I had burnt (ML 8.0 download). I had used CD-RWs, which had worked fine on my newer computers. I then tried using plain CD-Rs and the Tosh was fine. I had an Omnibook once, a P166. The way I remember it, you could only have one drive at a time in the swappable bay. But if you wanted, you could have the CD-ROM drive in the bay and the floppy drive just sitting beside the Omnibook on the desk, and the floppy drive plugged into the parallel port on the back. The BIOS on that one was not capable of booting from CD-ROM. I installed SuSE using the arrangement just described - booting from the floppy, which was plugged into the parallel port, and having the CD-ROM drive in the bay. SuSE 7.1 installed on it fine that way. I never got the sound working, though. *** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.3 Professional KDE 2.2.1 KMail 1.3.1 This is a Microsoft-free computer Bryan S. Re: [newbie] Laptop question
iirc one can copy the contents of all the cds into one single directory stucture with cds 2 and 3 going under .../Mandrake/RPMS2 and /RPMS3 respectively, however the partition with the install files on it is then unavailable for installing onto and it might be nice to maximise the space available during the install by creating a partition just large enough for one cd - iso or contents, the hd.img can handle either, as i mentioned after install one can then install from the other cd's before i forget, didn't there use to be a 'dosstart' boot method or somesuch where one could start the install from a dos prompt? perhaps if the laptop can be in dos with the cd drive recognised you could try this, i think there was/is a directory on cd1 with .bat file to launch under dos, anyway, once you have a partition with the iso or cd contents on you will need to know how to describe it to the install i.e. /dev/hda1 etc. the install will ask for the partition the file(s) are on and then for the directory they are in, if you feed the correct details then all should be plain sailing, if you don't get 'loading second stage' then the install is probably not able to find the install files, if you do and then it fails then either the file(s) are corrupt or there maybe some hardware problem/incompatiblity - obviously of you copy the cd onto a partition using windows it will be a fat16/32 - i'm not aware of that being a problem but i can't swear that the boot floppy kernel will recognise the full range of file systems - perhaps someone else could comment? you say you have tried this before and it didn't work, did you do anything different to what i have described? bascule On Thursday 11 July 2002 2:37 am, you wrote: > On Wed, 2002-07-10 at 19:27, bascule wrote: > > how big is the hard disk, if there is space and win is installed and you > > have the utilities to do it you could make room for a partition to copy > > one iso to and do a hard disk install using the hd.img on floppy, you > > could then > The HDD is only 4gb as far as I know. [newbie] Laptop question
I have come into ownership of an older HP Omnibook, a PII 233 iirc, and its got a removeable CD-Rom & Floppy drive. Can't have both attached at once. I had planned to stick mandrake on it, however I ran into a small snag. If I can't boot the CD itself, and can't have both floppy & CD-Rom attached at the same time, I can't boot from floppy then install. Nor may I just install off the CD. So..what to do? I looked at the linux for laptops site. No luck there. The one page devoted to this stuff was fairly useless. I went to HP's site for info on the BIOS & stuff, and got little else but BIOS info. So any suggestions? Ideas? Help? Thx, Femme Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] Laptop question...
I have a Dell Inspiron 7500 with Mandrake 8.0 installed on it. Whenever I close the lid, though, it suspends the computer. Is there any way for me to change this so that it doesn’t do that? (or better, just turns the screen off) Cheers, Jesse
