[nysbirds-l] A.Golden Plover/ Mattituck
Thanks to Keith Cashman, I hightailed it out to the sod fields on Mill La., just n/o Sound Ave and saw the single A.Golden Plover he found earlier today. The bird, still in mostly alternate plumage, was in the e/s field, along with 14 Killdeers, with 2 more Killdeers in the w/s field. While passing the North Fork Preserve, Jamesport on the way out, I observed a lone Turkey Vulture (Lonesome George ?) circling overhead. [nysbirds-l] Excellent Evening Flight of Eastern Kingbirds (Suffolk Co.)
Sue and I went to Heckscher State Park this evening to see if any Nighthawks were migrating through the park. We failed to see any nighthawks, but did witness an impressive movement of Eastern Kingbirds. From the Field 7 parking lot we recorded two hundred and twenty-three birds moving south in groups of fifteen to thirty birds. It should be interesting to see if many are seen on the barrier beach tomorrow. [nysbirds-l] Oceanside
Marine Nature Study Area 25 Aug A pair of COMMON RAVENS flew over head circling as they drifted east. A CLAPPER RAIL chick was seen briefly and a MARSH WREN was chattering in the phragmites to the west of the office. The resident WILLETS are now mostly gone. Seen were a single, silent adult and 2 separate almost fully grown birds of the year.
