[RBW] Re: Pedal Strike - LongLow

2014-05-21 Thread Philip Williamson
I've grounded a pedal on the fixed Quickbeam a couple of times, once
landing me in the street (funky turn across a speed bump), and more than
once a big hop of the rear wheel. I also broke the insides of a fairly rare
Fichtel & Sachs Automatic hub that way, and while I've replaced the broken
driving ring, I haven't really ridden it since. i have lower--profile
VP-001s on the Quickbeam now, and I try to remember "I can coast through
this!" on the geared bike. I did that just today, pressing down hard on the
outside pedal and leaning hard. I think taking the fun where it comes makes
it easier to remember which bike is which.

2014-05-21 Thread IanA
I'll play. I prefer greens and blues generally, as colors go. Turquoise
has always been a fascinating color for me, as is the seam foam of the
Atlantis. I've never been drawn to purple - depending on the shade for me
it ranges from indifferent to unpleasant. But, at the risk of splitting
hairs, I'm inclined to believe the Saluki is lilac which evokes the poetry
of Walt Whitman. So whereas the green bike is by definition faster, the
lilac one is poetic.

Almost ten years later two Saluki's get dragged into a garage to compare
life story's and go home with new riders! My Purple-Luki (#0017, via Amy)
and Bill's Green-Luki (#008, via Steve) are two great looking bikes. Both
size 60cm Saluki's and the only noticeable frame delta is the lower
placement of the low rider braze on's for the Green-Luki. How cool is it

my 'fairway green' bike and it sounds like Bill is looking forward to
building up a striking Moustache Bar'd rig with the Agapanthus Purple...

Bill wanted to poll the list on personal color preferences between the

Regardless it is cool to know a bit about the history behind a used frame

Hey Michael,

The GAP is the Great Allegheny Passage, a rails to trails project 150 miles
long between Cumberland, MD and Pittsburgh, PA.

Bill and I started talking about our common XO-3's and he mentioned the
Green Saluki as a potential solution if I ended up not getting used to the
purple-luki... Another connection made possible by this great community.
Good luck on my part!

Unless its a joke.
I put nothing past those jokesters at both BQ and RBW.

But it does say on the Blug:
" This July round of Sams will be the stock blue color, but also available
in a nice dark wine red metallic"

That would be a very cool color if it is really dark, and really metallic.
My wife's favorite color for bikes.
Maybe now I can convince her to get a RBW bike!
They need to put up some pics soon so I can show the wife!!

I actually did a very similar switch recently, and love it. You will need
a spacer for the cassette, I think it's the 4.5mm one.

I had lots of ghost shifting, always, on both my sam and my hunq. I
started with 9, went to 8 and it was a little better, and now am at 7 and
it's really really good/stable. highly recommend.

2014-05-21 Thread Bill
Wow. Someone traded a to-die-for green and cream Saluki for the same sized
one in lavender. He must have really been smitten with that
lily-of-the-Nile shade of purple to do such a thing. Of course when you're
riding along looking where you're going and not gawking at the frame you
can't even see what color the bike is.

Your Dad and you should do the GAP again from the other direction.
Besides, the Greenaluki is going to want to have its own turn too. Add
family members; make it an annual event. This could be just the beginning
of a great tradition.

There is no such thing as a "7 speed" chain any more; all there is is 8

Sweet frameset, the brazing is so clean. The tires look like a really
tempting alternative to hetres when riding more offroady stuff. The issue
now is a set of tires leads to a new wheel purchase since i am too lazy to

But RBW is outta stock on those $30 8's and so I am pondering 7.

I get some auto-shifts with 10 and 9, so I thought I would go to 8 or 7 for
the wider spacing between cogs (better frictioning), which has been
confirmed that there is wider spacing on another thread about this, as well
as by an RBW employee.

So this thread is mainly asking if a 7 chain and cassette will work with my
derailers, and on the Blue 2013 Sam. I mention Blue and the year in case
the bb and stays are spec'd different from previous models, if anyone knows.

Thank you for this insight - the pedals are wide, so I've now got a
narrower set - I think it will make quite a big difference. I'm never
going fast enough on the straights, so I have no excuse for pedaling
through corners, but hopefully the new pedals will go some way to mitigate
my sloth.

Re: [RBW] 7-speed cassette with XD@ cranks and Deore derailers ok to run on a Blue Sam?

2014-05-21 Thread Evan
FWIW, I, too, have a blue Sam and 9 works for me--in friction mode, with
old Suntour ratcheting thumb shifters. My RD is a Deore LX, model M581,
which works with 9, 8, or 7 speeds. Regarding your chain: I'm pretty sure
you can use an 8-speed chain on your 7-speed cassette with no problems at
all. And some folks claim that 8-speed chains are better-made than 7-speed
chains, although I haven't seen any detailed support of that claim.

[RBW] Owning an AHH and an Atlantis

I was curious if anyone on the boards own both the Atlantis and an AHH?

If so, do you feel like you get sufficient use out of both bikes? What do you

ever feel as if there is too much overlap to justify owning both these models?

Thanks for your insights.

Patrick, I know you want to keep costs of tweaking this bike

So good that I might want to have them on my all-rounder. I've used these

[RBW] 7-speed cassette with XD@ cranks and Deore derailers ok to run on a Blue Sam?

2014-05-21 Thread Michael
I have 9, want to go to 8. But am thinking for better friction shifting go
whole hog and get a 7 speed cassette and chain.

Can I do that on a Sam with XT front derailer and Deore rear?

Does chainline factor in, or is a shimano 7 speed cassette the same width
as an 8 speed? Will the 7 speed chain fit the derailer cages?

[RBW] Re: Soma's Tanaka Decaleurs???

2014-05-21 Thread Evan Baird
The only downside to these that I've found is you really want to strap it
down to keep the bag from bouncing if you ride it on super bumpy
trails/roads. If your bag has a loop for the tombstone that's less of an
issue, but mine doesn't so I put one of the included ostrich straps on when
I ride trails. I haven't had the linkage move on me at all. I wrote a post
about it on the Soma blog.

Re: [RBW] Mirrors and gadgets (was Why Wear a Helmet?)

2014-05-21 Thread Anton Tutter
My deepest sympathies to you and the loss of your friend.

Five years ago, my daughter and I, on my bike, were hit from the rear by a
negligent driver of a motor scooter who tried using the bike lane to pass
cars on the right. We were lucky we sustained nothing more than scratches
when we fell.

Since then I've worn a helmet mirror. I would find it difficult to ride
without one now. My eyes have been trained to focus on the road in front of
me, but catch oncoming traffic in the mirror, with peripheral vision, much
like I use the rearview mirror in a car. I consider the mirror an
indispensable component of my cycling gear.

[RBW] Re: Soma's Tanaka Decaleurs???

2014-05-21 Thread Manuel Acosta
They are good.
A couple months back Evan from Merry Sales had this idea of creating a stem
mounted decaleur
Here's early drawing of it.

https://flic.kr/p/eWRaKs

Since getting the prototype Evan has taken it on some stupid stuff. Early
prototype Evan found out early that the attachment point was to thin.

https://flic.kr/p/kpyKvC

The last prototype is solid and continues to be solid despite the abused
Evan puts it through.

https://www.flickr.com/search/?w=41060758@N07&q=evan

I haven't used this but I would say it's a winner.

Hope this helps.

[RBW] Re: Pedal Strike - LongLow

2014-05-21 Thread Jan Heine
I'd consider getting different pedals. The lean angle allowed by pedals
varies significantly, and if you have some wide pedals with big cages, you
can pick up a lot of clearance...

If you have pedals that allow a decent lean angle and still strike your
pedals, then I'd consider coasting instead. Pedaling around fast corners is
not a good habit. I learned this when racing, on a criterium course in
Portland on wide streets. I broke away and was hoping to stay away until
the finish. In a few corners, my pedals lightly touched the ground during
every lap, until, with one lap to go, I touched a little harder and crashed.

I think it was Greg LeMond who said that if you can pedal through a corner,
it means you weren't going fast enough on the straights.

At slow speeds, you often have to pedal around corners just to stay
upright. In those situations, you aren't leaning much, and toe overlap is
your big problem, not pedal strike.

Re: [RBW] Re: BB length for Atlantis with White VBC cranks?

2014-05-21 Thread Mark Reimer
Great call, Just sent Brian an email about it. He's also running the road
VBC cranks like the Hunq on the Radavist. Very curious how that works.

Last night I bought a super cheap 127.5mm BB just to try it out. Turns out
it does work, despite the White Ind calculations pointing me to a much
longer spindle length. I have about 3-4mm clearance at the chainring bolts,
which would be the first thing to contact the frame. That suggests I could
get away with a shorter spindle, maybe a 125, which still seems very long
to me, but so it goes. I'll update when it's finally resolved!

Re: [RBW] One last time: 559X 32 mm Kojaks versus 559X 32 mm Primo Racers versus others?

2014-05-21 Thread OS125
Patrick,

I recently went to the Soma New Express tire in 700 X 32, and have found it
to be an exceptionally smooth-running tire. Soma lists a 26 x 1.25 version
in stock. The difference in suppleness of ride between this tire and a
Pasela TG is quite obvious to me. The bike feels like a different machine.
The nature of my commute, and my unerring ability to ride straight over
sparkly bits regardless of how much room and warning is given, assures the
flat protection in the new tires would be tested. It has not been found
wanting.

Fantastic, Tony! That's a lot of tunnels. Those wind turbines drive me
nuts, with their visual motion and mostly their infrasound they put out.
You describe it well when you say you can feel the vibration they make.
Green energy is not pollution free.

To reveal my ignorance, I had no idea there was an Eastern Continental
Divide. Makes sense, given the mountain ranges.

What a wonderful gift to get to spend time with your Dad that way! That is
the most beautiful thing about the trip report, and there was a lot of
beauty to be seen.

With abandon,

Re: [RBW] Pedal Strike - LongLow

2014-05-21 Thread Tim Gavin
I ride a similar setup to Jim, a Riv Road converted to 650b, and I scrape a
pedal occasionally. Never catastrophically, just the light scrape when
pedaling around a curve with uneven or up-sloping terrain on the inside.

Like Patrick, I usually try to take care. I didn't ride enough this winter
to start any bad habits, even with studs on my KOM; Iowa was pretty frozen
too.

IYou can always swap on a shorter crank for a bit more clearance. I
swapped my 175 Campy Racing T crank for a 170 Stronglight 99 and like the
change.

Pedals can make a big difference in clearance, too.

Re: [RBW] Pedal Strike - LongLow

2014-05-21 Thread Patrick Moore
I have the opposite problem: I ride fixed so much that even on coasters I
corner very delicately -- in fact, I've lost many of such bike handling
skills I once had for this reason. But I have clipped a fixed gear pedal
once or twice, fortunately not falling.

My advice: be mindful. I do have something to keep in mind on the (coaster)
Ram that I don't have to mind on my other bikes (2 26" roads, Fargo): toe
overlap. It's not a big deal, but I have to keep it in mind.

In fact, one benefit of riding fixed is this sort of "anticipatory
mindfulness" that becomes a habit and -- one hopes -- carries over to other
bikes and other conditions.

One great pleasure of a former fixie, a high-bb Diamond Back mtb shod with
tall 60 mm Big Apples, was that I could lean into corners with little
danger of hitting a pedal.

[RBW] Father-Son GAP Trip

2014-05-21 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Yet another post raving about the GAP... this trail is truly a national
treasure! My Dad and I did the trip from Frostburg, MD to Pittsburgh, PA
over 3 days last Thurs-Sat. Through some really fantastic luck we actually
avoided getting drenched till a random cloudburst near Mckeesport finally
got us on Saturday. The tremendous deluge on Thursday hit Rockwood
literally as we rolled into our guest house accommodations and the storm
passed early the next morning making Friday a chilly but wonderful riding
day. I took alot of pictures along the way and I'm splitting them up into
segments on my blog, I should probably edit a little deeper but for anyone
trying to get a feel for the trail I think more pictures might be helpful
so I'm indulging in a pretty heavy dose of photos! I'll post up here as I
get them up.

Riv Content - The purple-luki handled the trail with every bit of grace you
would expect. We were pretty lightly loaded given that we were B&B or
guest housing it for accommodations. I only needed clothes, personal
electronics, spares, tools, water and snacks. I need to weigh the kit but
my guess is less than 30 lbs. I'll put up some more gear related thoughts
soon once I've had a bit more time to think about it. My cargo carrying
was accomplished with a Carradice longflap in the back over a Nitto R-14
and a Sackville Medium in a Wald 137 up front. That did put most of my
weight carried up hi but as it is my general commuting setup I didn't
notice any handling issues. I'd like to try a lower riding pannier setup
sometime to compare. One piece of gear I wish I'd had - An Axe! :) or a
folding saw anyway, we came across a number of downed trees that we could
mostly get the bikes up and over easily but I just saw on the GAP Facebook
page that a landslide caused a more serious blockage just after we'd gone
by. Mostly I'm bemoaning missing the opportunity to strap a hatchet to the
bike... next time!

I'm already three posts deep in my GAP retrospective on the blog so here
you go;

I'll leave off w/ some more Riv Content... I rode the Purple-Luki all the
way to Pittsburgh but I returned with a Fairway Green-Luki courtesy of Bill
E. The Purple torch has been passed, I enjoyed my time with her very much
and I'm really looking forward to getting the Fairway Green Saluki built
up. In the end the agapanthus purple just wasn't for me but I can't wait
to see what Bill does with her. I've got some stripped down side by side
frame shot's coming soon from our meet up and swap.
