USB sharing is turned on by:

settings>advanced/USB and SD Storage
Click on Sharing>Enable Sharing.

You should then see the drive under windows IF your workgroup is
WORKGROUP. If your workgroup is a different name you have to change the
Touch workgroup which is a bit more complicated.

Looks like everything is in there. I suspect the main difference is
that I started out using the actual Squeezeplay file, and then SCP'd it
to my Touch. In hindsight, I suppose I should have more-or-less done
the reverse, and brought the files over first, edited, tested, and sent
them back.

Live and learn...

Thanks for hosting - still getting used to this whole patch routine.

I just tried WPA2 and had no difference in performance, CPU utilization
was essentially the save, still no dropouts at all.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Wake On LAN

2010-04-22 Thread marlo

I've got a problem with WOL too:
When I put my touch (connected to SBS) into standby (playing stopped),
the SBS goes to sleep after 5min, just as I configured it to do. Very
soon after that, the SBS wakes up again, then goes asleep after another
5 minutes, wakes up again, and so on. This is annoying because the SBS
is in my bedroom and forces me to pull the plug out of the touch.

I have a radio too and that is working as expected - the SBS goes into
standby 5 minutes after I put the radio into standby (or turn it off)
and wakes up as soon as I start the radio.

It's now available through Patch Installer, I adjusted the patch a bit
and removed the conflicting issues and it can now be used on both 7.5.0
and all 7.5.1 releases so far.

I think it still does the same thing but feel free to check it and if
those conflicting parts really need to be there we can add specific
versions for each firmware version. I suspect the conflict was caused
by that you started developing on an early 7.5.1 version and then
created the patch file based on the latest 7.5.1 version, the result is
that your original patch basically removed some of the changes made by
Logitech recently in 7.5.1.

The updated patch file is found here:
http://erlandapplets.googlecode.com/svn/PatchInstaller/trunk/patches/FatFingerSkin/FatFingerSkin.patch

End users will of course install it through the third party Patch
Installer applet.

Also, the images wasn't stored inside the "images" sub directory in
your zip so I've moved those inside a "images" directory too.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] HDD for touch

2010-04-22 Thread foxx

Just got my Touch yesterday and set it up using a 500GB CN Memory USB
drive.
It scanned and even PLAYED music which I didn't figure to be on the
drive at all. It had been deleted long ago. Only after formatting the
drive and recopying my current music to it, it was gone.
The touch obiously doesen't care for virtual order. It scans what is
physically available. It was kind of spooky listening to music and
seeing cover art, which I wasn't even aware of owning.

Also a question to the experts. I had read earlier that the Touch would
make a USB drive available on the home network. So far I have not been
able to figure out how this works. Any suggestions?

Emphasis on the "slow motion" portion.

I was forutnate to get mine from Crutchfield right before their stock
was depleted. I don't see any indication of when either Crutchfield or
Amazon will be getting stock. Amazon only has availability through some
questionable marketplace stores. When you see an Amazon marketplace
outfit with 2 reviews selling the Touch, you have to wonder. Things
that make you go "hm".

$50 is significant. Depending on your situation, I'd wait.

I was told by a wholesaler that only a very few select big box stores
were getting the Touch but it would be after the big gun Online
Retailers supply chain was full. He was told that yes they could order
them, but they would not be getting any stock anytime soon. He said I
would be better off ordering from Logitech, Amazon, Crutchfield, or
J&R. I don't think Best Buy is going to carry them in the stores but
might sell them as an online order item similar to the Controller.
Which I think is a big mistake as Best Buy could be one of the few big
box stores to carry the Touch and make a killing. Best Buy is to busy
selling Sonos, Sony, and iPod/iPhone dock items though.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch availablity

2010-04-22 Thread johsti

How many have purchased a Touch from someplace other than Logitech?

The usual online vendors seem to be back ordered for quite a while now
or say "coming soon". Some of the other vendors that sell Squeezebox
products have no mention of the Touch at all. It seems the only place
to get one is directly from Logitech or from some internet vendors I've
never heard of. Is Logitech planning on selling them exclusively, or
did they only make a few thousand of them and that's it? The entire
roll out of this product seems very strange to me.

The reviews of the Touch sound promising, but I'm considering canceling
my order with Crutchfield and waiting this out a little longer. Or,
pony up and spend the extra $50 (thanks to a Crutchfield coupon) to
purchase one from Logitech instead. What are everyone's thoughts on
the future availability of this product?

There is many programs that can convert in one go.

similar to those I had with iPeng, and which I've already discussed here

So far what I like about the Touch:

* Being able to choose different radio streams.
* Doubles as a nice looking digital clock.

It does seem to have brought sound quality up a notch even using the
digital coax out, but that may just be the coolness factor affecting my
judgement.

Would only work if you have a squeeseboxserver on a fairly powerfull
machine. not onboard the Touch itself.

It's must be much more efficient to implement on the Touch itself.

It has two channels and volume ok.

Therefore technically there must exist an volume control for each
channel.

So this is possible I think ? an enhancement request in bugzilla maybe
.

The old ip3k players do not have an iota of cpu or ram left, so this
has been "impossible" on them.
Touch should be able to do this.

Nb, I think that the touch has far to little cpu to run any Eq or
anything like that. I'm just saying, this is the next question that
usually pops up.

(boom accomplish this by having an onboard dsp processor, same dsp does
the x-overs etc)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] FatFinger Skin for Touch

2010-04-22 Thread plympton

Just checked. I am using the touch skin full-time, as I like it better.
But this is the Touch skin (WQVGASmall, to be exact), so it doesn't
touch the IR skin at all.

The different skins are completely hard coded for the most part, so
it's a lot of trial-and-error changing values, etc.

PS: Erland tells me this patch might be 7.5.1+ only, as it failed on
his 7.5 machine. Buyer beware, you get what you pay for, etc.

The builtin server starts up whenever you plug in a USB drive (or SD
card) even if you are just using it for pictures. If you are using an
external server its probably a good idea to manually kill the builtin
server.

I can imagine some sort of burn in for speakers when they are new since
they have some moving parts. I can imagine letting your equipment warm
to the operating temperature might make some difference. Maybe 5
minutes. I can also imagine letting electronics run for a few days when
you get them might held you uncover any defects in manufacturing quicker
since things typically fail in the first few days.

I'm afraid that you are imaging it or if your not, I can tell you its
not your capacitors. Once a capacitor is fully charged, especially a
coupling capacitor (which is basically instantaneously), they have a
constant and exactly the same effect on the signal passing through them
until they go bad.

There are no moving parts in fixed capacitors, most charge
instantaneously, there is no such thing as burn-in or break-in with
fixed capacitors because once fully charged they do their job the same
time after time exactly the same, especially the ones in the signal
path.

Again the reason the Touch sounded great right out of the box is
because there is no such thing as burn-in to effect a modern electronic
devices sound!

The screensavers take up significant CPU as I understand it, especially
the analog VU meter one. Perhaps the CPU is getting maxed out.

To avoid the issue, perhaps you could try not using the screensaver and
just leave the "now playing" screen up.

I tried this software back in March, and decided to remove it.
Unfortunately, the version I'd installed (up to date at the time) did
not uninstall well. It left a task around, but the task description
was non-existent, causing launchd to crash / restart constantly. I
discovered this only after about a month when debugging some other
problem. The logs were littered with crash/error messages deposited
every couple of seconds.

The problem has since been resolved, as there is an Uninstaller.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?

2010-04-22 Thread toby10

I think something is wacky with MySB.com today, I've seen all kinds of
strange things.
Including Touch unable to use any MySB.com features like Apps.
Though I did not get any password error message on my Touch.

But it is all working now on Touch. Maybe try in a little bit.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?

2010-04-22 Thread RichardLittlewood

It's still working today, but the mysqueezebox login fails again with an
unknown password error. I'll live without the apps anyway as I'm
frightened of ejecting the USB or I'll have another mammoth scan to
look forward to.

You say 30k files is a lot but, winamp handles it easily enough on a
PC. If each file had 1kBytes of tags, it's still only 30Mbytes, hardly
a lot to hold in internal memory these days.

I think I'll avoid touching it for now and live with the slow GUI until
there's a software update.

btw, do the developers working on this product or the support guys
actually read these forums?

I use sub-genres.

All tags like 24bit/96kHz, HDCD or Audiophile itself will display in
the menu *Audiophile*. Tags like Baroque, Romantic, 20th Century will
appear in *Classical* and Blues, Soul, Funk is for the *Jazz* menu.

There are also cross-references. A file with the tags Baroque and
24bit/96kHz at the same time will appear in both, *Audiophile* and
*Classical*.

It's nice to have those sub-genres to create random mixes, but I would
simplify all my genres if needed in order to make the browsing menu
look like I previously posted (I could live without cross-references
and without *Audiophile*.)

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and "burn in"

2010-04-22 Thread Andy8421

Just to add my two ha'penny's worth

I used to design precision electronic test equipment. We used to burn
it in at elevated temperatures and at higher voltages than normal
supply voltages. This had nothing to do with accuracy of the the
device, and everything to do with accelerating infant mortality. If
the device survived the burn in, then it was probably going to out last
the guarantee period.

I think that much of the nonsense written about burn-in with hifi gear
comes from certain speaker designs where the compliance of the
suspension changed during the first few weeks of usage and the speakers
sounded better for it. Somehow, with the usual lack of rigor in the
hifi press, this got transferred to electronic equipment, and I have
even seen an article on burning-in speaker cables..

Did everybody follow the logic here? It goes like this:

1) Notec couldn't get the Duet to work
2) Therefore Notec concludes the Duet doesn't work, and calls it a POS
3) It then follows that nobody's Duet works
4) Conclusion: People who say their Duets work are lying or deluded

I think that pretty much says everything we need to know about the
aptly-named Notec. Anybody possessing logical and analytical skills
that can achieve such a very special degree of reasoning probably has
difficulty working a toaster. So it really is no surprise that it was
impossible for somebody like that to get a Duet working. People whose

It should now be available through Patch Installer, I had to adjust

applies the patch with the -l flag which ignore differences in white

Hi Erland

I don't use all the functionalities of CustomBrowse regularly

But my browsing structure looks like this thanks to your plugin:

-My Music
-Audiophile
-Album
-Classical
-Composer
-Album
-Jazz
-Artist
-Album
-Pop
-Artist

If there would be a possibility to browse by composer at the top level
together with artist and album, this would already be a huge
improvement as the composer field is populated within classical music
only.

Thanks!

I figured it should be version 5, but was wondering if perhaps it had
been updated yet and whether anyone had a later version.

Beta testers last year were asked to exchange their earlier beta
versions of the Touch and were sent devices showing that they were
hardware version 5. IIRC, this was at about the same time that they
went to production, before sales were held up due to the software
development issues.

The Touch is a small and relatively simple electronic wise, consumer
product. There is no such thing as 'Burn In" in a device of this type,
period! And I don't believe there are any Black Gate capacitors in the
Touch that supposedly sound better with age.

More importantly, the term 'Burn In' comes from the old days when it
was part of a requirement (mainly in gov and mil contracts) to make
sure that a component did not die in the first few hours of a product
being turned on thus causing a device to be sent out that would go DOA
a few hours after being turned on by the purchaser. It has and had
nothing to do with how something sounds. Something like ninety-two
percent of most electronic component failures occur in the first 72
hours. So companies (and some still do) used to do what they called a
Burn-In to protect the company name from field failures that would be
found from leaving equipment powered up a few days. It was also used in
the days when many things had to be adjusted and aligned at operating
temperature.

Now mechanical devices like speakers with dynamic drivers can need some
break-in to reach their proper sound, but again this is break-in not
burn-in.

My Touch has sounded the same since the day I turned it on, GREAT!

What is supposed to happen is that after the initial scan is complete
subsequent drive attachments start a quick scan where it is just
comparing date and time of the files against the database, this is much
faster than a full scan. Of course it will take longer to check the
dates on 50,000 files than it will on 10,000 files, but its much faster
than a full scan. If it finds and new or updated audio files it will
scan just those files.

Unfortunately I think some people are having a situation where the
initial scan fails for some reason leaving a corrupted database on the
disk. Thus at the next attachment it can't do the quick scan and has to
start over again.

I'm running the official firmware that everybody else should be using.
Yes the Touch I have is identical to the ones you can buy. The only
difference is the labels on the remote control.

The 24/96 files I'm using are some recordings I made myself and some
upsampled 44.1 files. I don't see any particular differnce between
these two groups. Currently I don't have any commercial 24/96 files.

For those having problems with wireless connection to an external
server have you tried streaming PCM instead of flac? I get no dropouts
either way.

Yep, you see it. So now right click on the art and select COPY. Then
within the same place (where the art already is), right click and
select PASTE. I know this sounds crazy (hey, why am I pasting art when
it is already there). But it is not really 'there'. It is in the ITUNES
database, but NOT embedded in the song file. Doing what I suggested
will embed it. Then wherever you use this file the art work will show
up (including squeezeboxserver)

That's what I did and I don't have a software DHCP server running on my
laptop. My Touch had a IP address (192.168.1.5) assigned to it by DHCP
already so I did the method you described in your first post and chose
a new static IP address (192.168.1.144). Then I reconnected to my
wireless network. After that I checked the diagnostics screen on my
Touch and those two IP addresses where blinking back and forth. I
thought maybe the static IP I chose would show up after I rebooted my
Touch but only the old DHCP assigned IP showed up. I repeated the same
steps after I turned off DHCP on my router, (turning DHCP back on after
I saw my static IP show up in the diagnostics screen) and now I have a
static IP.

And I also truly believe if it makes one feel better to think that

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and "burn in"

2010-04-22 Thread m1abrams

Phil - some people believe cables "burn-in" :) Maybe if you apply
upwards of 10kV and several 100s of amps you might see a "change" to a
cable. So trying to straighten someone out of the thought that burn-in
of a digital device like the Touch is a myth is a long road if they
think their copper changes the way it sounds by apply a few volts to
it.

Heck is far as they are concerned what happens inside the Touch is
nothing short of a freakin miracle.

I think the burn-in myth probably started with speakers where burn-in
actually does have some merit since you are talking about a device that
has an elastic component that does change a good bit depending on the
make as it is used. But pretty much everything else is either pretty
static or "formed" within seconds of first use.

Having an electronics background from years ago, burn-in to me was
always about running electonics over a long period of time to gain
confidence that none of the components would fail due to infant
mortality. It was about improving performance or making then work
better.

Yes, the brain and how it affects perception is very powerful. In a
completely different area - has you car ever run smoother, faster, etc.
because you washed and waxed it? Because you changed the oil? Mine has
:-). And I'm still not immune. I recently had my car detailed and I
swear my car runs better. Does it really? Of course not, but my brain
perceives it as such.

For support purposes the server logs are always shared by the Touch, so
Samba is always running. The only thing that turning sharing on or off
does is control whether the SD or USB media are shared by Samba.

I actually haven't done it yet. I'm trying to keep a completely stock
unit so I can make comparisons and evaluations that will match what
others will be hearing.

When I get my next Touch I'll be modding this one, for sure the cap is
the first thing to go!

The cap is 10uf.

I did measure the voltage before the cap and it was less than 20mV.

I don't remember where the headphone gets tapped off but I think its
before the cap.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and "burn in"

2010-04-22 Thread Phil Leigh

I don't want to up[set anybody (honestly) but:
1) burn-in testing as described in the links posted earlier is about
stress testing (often to destruction) to determine mortality rates etc,
especially in high voltage, high risk components. The sort of components
found in audio gear are rather different - except for large caps used in
valve HT circuits. The burn-in described here is not about "burning them
in to make them better" it's about "burning them in to see if/when they
fail"

2) The mere fact that (audio) equipment ALWAYS sounds better after
being burned-in really should give you pause for thought. Why would
this be? - after all, we know that actually electrolytic caps begin to
deteriorate as soon as you start using them... What law of the universe
determines that burn-in is always beneficial to audio quality? Have you
EVER heard anyone say "it sounded great at first then it got worse..."
No, thought not. The reason is simple. It is NOT happening in physical
reality.

3) Over a year ago I got my Touch. In preparation for this very
question I made some recordings (24/192) of the analogue and digital
outputs when it was just out of the box, after 1 week, 1 month and
nearly 12 months. AudioDiffMaker finds nothing different in these
recordings.

4) Human audio memory is rubbish. We are (mostly) great at pitch,
rhythm/timing, harmony, melody and timbre. Very poor at everything
else. The brain on the other hand is the most powerful and elegant
thing in creation...

5) I really hope no-one belives that the digital circuits "burn-in". I
just can't recall the last time I felt my new computer improved its
speed and cripness of image, disk read speed etc during its first few
days/weeks of usage... The analogue circuit of the Touch comprise the
DAC chip, two caps and a resistor. These are not the sort of caps that
"burn-in" (form).

None of this matters. What matters is that you like the sound, now that
you are used to it.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?

2010-04-22 Thread mlsstl

I gave the internal server with a USB drive a second try.

My first effort ran for 14 or 15 hours without giving progress info or
ever seeming to conclude. While it played music, it was not a
satisfactory effort.

The external USB drive had about 46,000 songs in a variety of formats -
Flac, MP3 and M4A. It is a duplicate of the music on the drive in my
server.

So, I just played music the old fashioned way (from the main server)
for the past 10 days or so.

Last night I brought home my off-premises backup drive (another
duplicate of the music) to update it with the new material I've added
recently.

Afterward, I decided to give it a go using the Touch server. Everything
seemed to be going well - I got a progress screen that gave a percentage
and song count. It seemed like it was going to take about 4 1/2 hours to
complete (which roughly matched the 5X multiple for how much longer the
Touch server takes to scan compared to a separate server I've seen
bandied about.)

I went to bed last night at 80% complete and expected to see a nicely
running machine this morning. Instead, I woke up to a frozen Touch
(needed to hit the reboot button on the back) and an EXT3 drive that
looks like it now needs to be fsck'd. There was no power outage or
other problem reported by my UPS on the main computer last night.

I routinely do a complete database wipe and rescan on the main
Squeezeboxserver as I add music and artwork or move things around and
have never had an issue. So I don't think there is anything goofy about
the music folder.

That's two scan failures on two different drives so far for the
built-in Touch server. I've had one success with a 2GB flash drive but
so far I'm not particularly impressed with the built-in server.

Kind of a pity that after a four month release delay to fix these
problems, people still seem to having issues.
