You should then see the drive under windows IF your workgroup is WORKGROUP. If your workgroup is a different name you have to change the Touch workgroup which is a bit more complicated. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Wake On LAN
I've got a problem with WOL too: When I put my touch (connected to SBS) into standby (playing stopped), the SBS goes to sleep after 5min, just as I configured it to do. Very soon after that, the SBS wakes up again, then goes asleep after another 5 minutes, wakes up again, and so on. This is annoying because the SBS is in my bedroom and forces me to pull the plug out of the touch. I have a radio too and that is working as expected - the SBS goes into standby 5 minutes after I put the radio into standby (or turn it off) and wakes up as soon as I start the radio. -- marlo marlo's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=37542 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69138 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] HDD for touch
Just got my Touch yesterday and set it up using a 500GB CN Memory USB drive. It scanned and even PLAYED music which I didn't figure to be on the drive at all. It had been deleted long ago. Only after formatting the drive and recopying my current music to it, it was gone. The touch obiously doesen't care for virtual order. It scans what is physically available. It was kind of spooky listening to music and seeing cover art, which I wasn't even aware of owning. Also a question to the experts. I was told by a wholesaler that only a very few select big box stores were getting the Touch but it would be after the big gun Online Retailers supply chain was full. [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch availablity
How many have purchased a Touch from someplace other than Logitech? The usual online vendors seem to be back ordered for quite a while now or say "coming soon". Some of the other vendors that sell Squeezebox products have no mention of the Touch at all. It seems the only place to get one is directly from Logitech or from some internet vendors I've never heard of. Is Logitech planning on selling them exclusively, or did they only make a few thousand of them and that's it? The entire roll out of this product seems very strange to me. The reviews of the Touch sound promising, but I'm considering canceling my order with Crutchfield and waiting this out a little longer. Or, pony up and spend the extra $50 (thanks to a Crutchfield coupon) to purchase one from Logitech instead. I can imagine some sort of burn in for speakers when they are new since they have some moving parts. I can imagine letting your equipment warm to the operating temperature might make some difference. Maybe 5 minutes. I can also imagine letting electronics run for a few days when you get them might held you uncover any defects in manufacturing quicker since things typically fail in the first few days. -- pounce pounce's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12645 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77727 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and "burn in"
Just to add my two ha'penny's worth I used to design precision electronic test equipment. We used to burn it in at elevated temperatures and at higher voltages than normal supply voltages. This had nothing to do with accuracy of the the device, and everything to do with accelerating infant mortality. If the device survived the burn in, then it was probably going to out last the guarantee period. I think that much of the nonsense written about burn-in with hifi gear comes from certain speaker designs where the compliance of the suspension changed during the first few weeks of usage and the speakers sounded better for it. Somehow, with the usual lack of rigor in the hifi press, this got transferred to electronic equipment, and I have even seen an article on burning-in speaker cables.. -- Andy8421 Andy8421's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=16846 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77727 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

The Touch is a small and relatively simple electronic wise, consumer product. There is no such thing as 'Burn In" in a device of this type, period! And I don't believe there are any Black Gate capacitors in the Touch that supposedly sound better with age. More importantly, the term 'Burn In' comes from the old days when it was part of a requirement (mainly in gov and mil contracts) to make sure that a component did not die in the first few hours of a product being turned on thus causing a device to be sent out that would go DOA a few hours after being turned on by the purchaser. It has and had nothing to do with how something sounds. Something like ninety-two percent of most electronic component failures occur in the first 72 hours. So companies (and some still do) used to do what they called a Burn-In to protect the company name from field failures that would be found from leaving equipment powered up a few days. It was also used in the days when many things had to be adjusted and aligned at operating temperature. Now mechanical devices like speakers with dynamic drivers can need some break-in to reach their proper sound, but again this is break-in not burn-in. My Touch has sounded the same since the day I turned it on, GREAT! -- iPhone *iPhone* Media Room: Transporter, VTL TL-6.5 Signature Pre-Amp, Ayre MX-R Mono's, VeraStarr 6.4SE 6-channel Amp, Vandersteen Speakers: Quatro Mains, VCC-5 Reference Center, four VSM-1 Signatures, Video: Runco RS 900 CineWide AutoScope 2.35:1 Living Room: Duet, ADCOM GTP-870HD, Cinepro 3K6SE III Gold, Vandersteen Model 3A Signature, Two 2Wq subs, VCC-2, Two VSM-1 Kitchen: Squeezebox BOOM Bedroom: Second Boom Bathroom: Squeezebox Radio Ford Thunderbird: Duet, Mac Mini Ford Expedition: SB Touch, USB drive iPhone's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13622 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77727 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Of course it will take longer to check the dates on 50,000 files than it will on 10,000 files, but its much faster than a full scan. If it finds and new or updated audio files it will scan just those files. Unfortunately I think some people are having a situation where the initial scan fails for some reason leaving a corrupted database on the disk. Thus at the next attachment it can't do the quick scan and has to start over again. Yes the Touch I have is identical to the ones you can buy. The only difference is the labels on the remote control. The 24/96 files I'm using are some recordings I made myself and some upsampled 44.1 files. I don't see any particular differnce between these two groups. Currently I don't have any commercial 24/96 files. For those having problems with wireless connection to an external server have you tried streaming PCM instead of flac? I get no dropouts either way. My Touch had a IP address (192.168.1.5) assigned to it by DHCP already so I did the method you described in your first post and chose a new static IP address (192.168.1.144). Then I reconnected to my wireless network. After that I checked the diagnostics screen on my Touch and those two IP addresses where blinking back and forth. I thought maybe the static IP I chose would show up after I rebooted my Touch but only the old DHCP assigned IP showed up. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and "burn in"
Phil - some people believe cables "burn-in" :) Maybe if you apply upwards of 10kV and several 100s of amps you might see a "change" to a cable. So trying to straighten someone out of the thought that burn-in of a digital device like the Touch is a myth is a long road if they think their copper changes the way it sounds by apply a few volts to it. Heck is far as they are concerned what happens inside the Touch is nothing short of a freakin miracle. I think the burn-in myth probably started with speakers where burn-in actually does have some merit since you are talking about a device that has an elastic component that does change a good bit depending on the make as it is used. But pretty much everything else is either pretty static or "formed" within seconds of first use. -- m1abrams m1abrams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=850 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77727 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to check the progress of a scan of the USB drive?
I gave the internal server with a USB drive a second try. My first effort ran for 14 or 15 hours without giving progress info or ever seeming to conclude. While it played music, it was not a satisfactory effort. The external USB drive had about 46,000 songs in a variety of formats - Flac, MP3 and M4A. It is a duplicate of the music on the drive in my server. So, I just played music the old fashioned way (from the main server) for the past 10 days or so. Last night I brought home my off-premises backup drive (another duplicate of the music) to update it with the new material I've added recently. Afterward, I decided to give it a go using the Touch server. Everything seemed to be going well - I got a progress screen that gave a percentage and song count. It seemed like it was going to take about 4 1/2 hours to complete (which roughly matched the 5X multiple for how much longer the Touch server takes to scan compared to a separate server I've seen bandied about.) I went to bed last night at 80% complete and expected to see a nicely running machine this morning. Instead, I woke up to a frozen Touch (needed to hit the reboot button on the back) and an EXT3 drive that looks like it now needs to be fsck'd. There was no power outage or other problem reported by my UPS on the main computer last night. I routinely do a complete database wipe and rescan on the main Squeezeboxserver as I add music and artwork or move things around and have never had an issue. So I don't think there is anything goofy about the music folder. That's two scan failures on two different drives so far for the built-in Touch server. I've had one success with a 2GB flash drive but so far I'm not particularly impressed with the built-in server. Kind of a pity that after a four month release delay to fix these problems, people still seem to having issues. -- mlsstl mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=77230 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
