I can understand how somebody could not like it. It is such a primitive take on New Order, and if you cannot judge something outside of its historical perspective I can understand how you would not like it. It isnt modern or slick, it is the sound of some guy just getting his shit together in a studio. Then again, that is exactly why I love that track, because it is so raw and it reeks of that era. ;) That jam that has soul! It is probably my 3rd favorite KS track next to Goodlife and Feel The Mood. Take care, Mike Taylor NP Triangle of Love > > __ > Do You Yahoo!? > Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! (313) My gratitude and apology - Velvet Lounge last night!
Greetings cats! 1st - I must say that I was complete overwhelmed by the ultra warm reception I received on my return to Velvet last night. I have love for each one of you, and I want you to know that I was truly moved by your kind welcome, and thoughtful show of appreciation at the end of the night. Y'all was tryin' to make a brother break down and cry last night! :-) I was certainly touched with emotion, and I hope you all accept my genuine gratitude! 2nd - In a brief moment of frustration last night, I responded to "one less appreciative individual" regarding the vibe and education on a DETROIT TECHNO CLASSIC by say saying, "I don't need to shut up `cause this is my house!" Well, I WAS WRONG FOR SAYING THAT FOR SEVERAL REASONS: a) That statement simply is not true. And if there were ever a night on which this was more evident, it was last night! The simple truth of the matter is that it is (and I quote) "OUR HOUSE, AND OUR HOUSE MUSIC. AND YOU SEE, NO ONE MAN OWNS HOUSE, BECAUSE HOUSE IS A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE SPOKEN AND UNDERSTOOD BY ALL." b) As a seasoned professional, I should have handled that situation much better. I had NO RIGHT to lay claim to such an idea as "MY HOUSE" because each one of us share in the VIBE that makes Sundays at Velvet what it is, and that includes everyone from the management, to the security, to the bar staff. So I hope you all will accept my humble apology! By the way, here's the info on the record which I was playing at the time which was the indirect subject of the controversy: KREEM ~ "Triangle Of Love" - METROPLEX RECORDS (a true Detroit classic) peace & respect, TP

He was playing an amazing CR sounding track that's on the Richie Hawtin Mary Anne Hobbs mix - crunchy as hell (I'd kill for a track ID). he came on around 12:30 to an intro from one of the unabombers and i think the room was never fuller than when he played isolee remix just after jaguar he played some CRish track too. cool. but i dont think i spotted one single CC track? no jam the box or dominas remix. nuffin. I had to leave early too as I had a train to catch, but left as he was playing 'No Way Back'. It was nice to hear The Goodmen out again too, right after 'Yeke Yeke' - was that the Hardfloor mix? Lisa M did a cover of this on BMG back in the late 80s and there were also a number of newbeat covers. Perhaps it is one of those. The 4 tracks on Travelog have significantly moved on from the sound of the first two EP's and stand in stark contrast to the Uber-minimalism of the collaborative 'Blir' project. It would perhaps be a tad misleading to describe the pieces here as moving onto a more commercial domain - and yet there is a stunning, accessible warmth in these pieces missing from a lot of similarly aspiring product. Subtle harmonics drift, rubbing against the hypnotic percolating rhythm tracks. We cannot recommend this 12" enough. Pure essential. >> Really great to hear about this, as since we are talking about Gramm we should also mention SND who are certainly as intriguing and skilled. I was a huge fan of their first two 12"s on their own SND label and the CD on Mille Plateaux but the Blir 12" and the Shirt Trax CD were too minimal for me. The Blir 12" sounds like the square root of Studio 1. And if I remember correctly SND's self-released stuff is always very limited (300-ish), so everybody move fast and grab this one. If it really shows them progressing as much as the promo claims it will be a classic. Matt

(313) tp @ velvet lounge, detroit!
first off, if you have not checked out this night, i suggest you go! ...and don't just walk, RUN! i cannot believe that i had not gone to this earlier. and to be honest the only reason i even went tonite was cause i was already out and about. i went to see the kids in the hall. anyway. the velvet is a multi level club in pontiac with tp on the main floor, then jungle and hip hop in separate rooms elsewhere. personally i haven't seen tp spin in months and i must say he is definitely off the hook! he plays great tracks, from new to old, while cutting, scratching and beat juggling like a dmc style dj and still managing to keep a flow to it all. he keeps the vibe tight. as he says "this is my house" and he does control it. tp is a good time party dj and the place was just slamming. words cannot describe the vibe. how can i not give props to someone who just cut the shit out of spastik?! ...and his new record "i wanna f.f.u" is tight. anyway. as i said, if you are in the area i definitely suggest checking it out. -- .:: mikey ::. .:: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] ::.
Re: (313) house music (the real story)
Found this obscure article on Trax on a search engine (sherlock), very entertaining, does a nice job going over the origins of chicago house. http://www.geocities.com/HotSprings/1392/Trax.html Jessie Saunders: "So I'm looking for someone to help me make a record, and it so happened that Vince [Lawrence] had come in the club looking for me to play a record that he had, this way-out avant, garde thing, 'cause at the time I would play Devo and the B52s. He'd talked to me about how his father had this label and where they would press records, so the first person I thought of was Vince. He took me down there and that's where I met Larry Sherman. And that's when the nightmare began! [laughs]" As far as Jesse Saunders book, cant comment cause I haven't read it but he does have a web site for the book. http://www.justsaypro.com/ Peace. stephen.

I noticed that it was co-written by one LaTonya Saunderson (such a pretty name, LaTonya). I assume this is Kevin's sister? Has she done some other musical projects? C >Yep. Yep. I wasn't very impressed. Even if he was the [self acclaimed] "originator" [which is arguable, in my eyes], the fact that he can't get over his ego makes it a pretty frustrating read. It's also hard to get ahold of [the book, I mean..] /peter anyone read jesse saunders book about house music? p

"Don't try to > stop me" is my favourite track. quite similar to "I'm > ready" Yah...that's the best song off the New York Cake LP by Kano. Someone asked for tracklistings so here it is: Kano (self-titled) 1980 side A 1. It's a War 2. Now Baby Now 3. Cosmic Voyager side B 1. Ahjia 2. Super Extra Sexy sign 3. I'm Ready Kano - New York Cake 1981 side one 1. Can't Hold Back (Your Loving) 2. She's a Star 3. Baby Not Tonight side two 1. Party 2. Round and Round 3. Re: (313) Anybody have this 69 track?

Re: (313) What is Italo-Disco? (fwd)
This is an email I saved from last year...pretty informative too for those interested in what italo-disco is all about... minto -- Forwarded message -- Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 10:52:23 +0200 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: In Vitro <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (313) What is Italo-Disco? Chris asked: >I've heard this term when someone was talking about I-f's DJ >sets. ButI have no clue what is meant by it. >Any examples and recommendations? Italo (or Italian) disco was big during the late seventies, early eighties. Fired up by full discobands like Macho and later Peter Jacques Band, it slowly transformed into a more synthesized and *very* melodic musicform. Labels like Il Discotto (with it's many sublabels) and Disco Magic released hundreds of records during the early eighties. Many mediocre, but some brilliant and timeless. In more than one way, Italian Disco was the blueprint for techno. It was the first form of dancemusic made entirely with synthesizers and drumcomputers. Detroit artists like Carl Craig and Juan Atkins aknowledge this fact, and frequently namedrop Italian discoartists as influencial. Artists that made classic records include: Doctor's Cat, Klein MBO, Gazebo, Dan Harrow, My Mine (Hypnotic Tango), Kano, Scotch and many many more. Famous producers are Tony Carasco & Mario Boncaldo, Turatti & Chieregatto and Farina & Crivillente (who later turned into the Stock, Aitken & Waterman of Italo). After '83 the quality of the records went downhill. Melodies got cheesier every month and many producers did the same trick over and over again. A bit like what's happening to dancemusic right now. German label ZYX issued a lot of Italian disco compilations back in the days. You can still find them in second hand shops. But the original Italian records are regular recordcollectors nowadays, with for instance Tenax by Diana Est or a Taste of Love by Dan Harrow changing hand for 100$ or more!
