313 sets

2000-04-26 Thread Holly C MacDonald-Korth
Hi guys...

The page with the 313 sets is down for a couple days. Actually, it went down
last thursday and has not (to my knowledge) been up since. Apparently my isp
has installed new routers in my area and i am not getting routed correctly. So,
i am currently at their mercy, though i expect to see it back up by tomorrow.
I'll let you all know when it is working properly again.

Thanks for your patience...

Underground Resistance question

2000-04-26 Thread Jason Birchmeier
I'm writing a biographical piece on the group's music for my independant
study and am curious about the early contributions by Jeff Mills and Robert
Hood.

A) when exactly did Mills stop collaborating with Banks?

It sounds as though he was involved with the X-101 record (UR-013.5) but I'm
guessing he left the group shortly after. I haven't heard many of the
releases following X-101 except for MIA (UR-018) and Message to the Majors
(UR-21) so it's hard for me to guess.

B) was Hood ever that involved?

He obviously was involved with the Gyroscopic record and I've heard rumors
of him participating on the Riot record, but again I really don't have any
idea about how involved he was after that.

I'm going under the assumption that neither Mills nor Hood had anything to
do with UR once they started Axis. It's hard to tell exactly when this was
because so many of the UR records don't list a date.

Any input would is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jason

Yes! Maybe I should have clarified I meant besides Chicago, but I was
feeling overzealous as DBX was pumping out of my monitors at the time. I
didn't feel the need to mention this as an element of DB's output seems to
be a reinterpretation or permutation of some of Chicago's source ideas
(most notably SD's "Losing Control") - and anyway, most of his records were
produced after a lot of Chicago's most memorable "track" output. Another
example is how almost every genre of club music copied at least a part
Basic Channel's style even though Basic Channel was reinterpreting and
mutating dub. To extend this example, I would have put on a BC record,
irrationally posted "who gave a shit about dark 7ths, near-subs and Space
Echo before BC?" and gotten "Uhh... Tubby. Scratch."

I'd say there is no argument about the worldwide RZ1 explosion happening
post-DBX, not post-Poindexter, right? That's not a statement about either
producer - it's a statement about the world noticing, digesting and copying
a style.

Help w/Kelli Hand...

2000-04-26 Thread Peter T. Bense

Odd request here.

Mr. Duke? TP Alan... and anyone else who might have had personal
contact with Kelli Hand... I need some input on her.

I've found very limited information on the web. Nothing even seems to
indicate how old she is -- there isn't a good biography of her anywhere,
either. I have no clue what her musical background is or who it was [aside
from a mention of Jeff Mills helping her start her label] who assisted her
in establishing Acacia. There are some interviews in techno.de from
Frontpage but alas, they are in German --> Babelfish can only do me so much
good, you know?

I am interested in any opinions, perspectives... thoughts on her production
technique... how she is perceived. I need this information for a paper I
am writing for my women's studies class.

So... if anyone has $0.02 to share... or who might be able to help me out
with a biography or something about Ms. Hand, I'd appreciate it muchly.

Regards,

/peter

well, from what i have noticed over the last several years, it appears that
derrick plays in scotland a lot... also, have you heard derrick spoin before? he
is incredible and it is an experience not to be missed... i love him, but his
sets aren't that different from one another, so, if you have heard him before,
then go see carl...

also, i might reccommend seeing carl on the simple fact that you are less likely
to be able to see him again in the near future...

as far as skills go, derrick wins... is carl just spinning? if it's a live set,
definitely go, but his dj sets aren't that phenomenal in my opinion... he's
definitely a selection over technique dj...

peace,
holly

furthermore, wendy refuses to acknowledge the fact that she was once
walter. her official website makes no mention of the fact, and she has
sued publications in the past for saying so.

you might want to find out more about an event that used to take place in san
francisco called "your sister's house" i don't know if it is still going on, but
it was an all female dj night... does anyone on the list from the west coast
know more about this? i think drc and some others were involved in throwing it??

you also could talk about jackie christie... she started as a dj on power 96 in
detroit and is now a pretty big new york club dj (club, not underground... i
can't stand her sets)

i don't know if you want to go into the circuit party slant, but susan moribido
is a huge circuit dj in spite of the fact that she is a woman...

and then there are the divas... jocelyn brown, barabara tucker, dajae, etc i
also love crystal waters... she writes all her own stuff and has quite a long
lasting career...

good luck,

Hi guys. I need a little bit of help here.

I am trying to write a paper for my Women's Studies class about women in
dance music.

I am focusing on K. Hand, but need help from any of you who might be
knowledgeable in this area.

People I've mentioned so far are: Wendy Carlos, Diana Ross, Martha Wash,
First Choice, Donna Summer, Grace Jones, Chaka Kahn. I am also aware of
Andrea Parker, Marusha, Kemistry + Storm, the Punisher, DJ Rap, Saskia,
Sandra Collins, DJ Irene, etc.

I know I am overlooking a lot of people... so... anyone... label manager,
producer, vocalist, performing artist... whatever. Women in electronic
music... or dance music... or electronic dance music.

Any ideas?

Just a quick note, in case you didn't know it:
Even though Wendy Carlos is a very important name in electronic music
history, she as born a man, Walter Carlos, and many years after releasing
works such as Hooked on Bach and The Clockwork Orange soundtrack had a sex
change operation, becoming Wendy Carlos.
If you can find an old copy of Hooked on Bach, you'll see that it's credited
to Walter Carlos, but the newer copies are credited to Wendy...

Question? Does Derrick actually show up or does he only bail on American

Re: (313) 3MB w/Juan Atkins info

2000-04-26 Thread James Bucknell

came out on tresor in 93, titled 'magic', i think. it's a double pack that was
recently re-released. it's a mix of 'the cosmic courier' (which is also included
on the tresor release) done with moritz van oswald (that's maurizio, isn't it?).
yet another mix is found on the flipside of 'jazz is the teacher' on metroplex.

it's a great track. similar in spirit, and quality, to octave one's 'eniac'.

I believe it came out on Tresor quite a few years ago (possibly '95) and was
featured on the
Laurent Garnier 'Laboritoire Mix' album. Don't know if it's still available on
any other
format than the Garnier mix CD.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

If anyone is interested in trading a CD-R copy of "lifelike" [provided by
yours truly] for a copy of "From the 21st"... that'd be pretty nice indeed.

(313) Closer: Musik (Kompakt)

2000-04-26 Thread Tom Robbins
Closer: Musik (Kompakt 016)

If anyone comes across a copy of this (excellent) record, check out A2 track
'2 The Beat 2 The Rock', a mad interpretation of Kevin Saunderson's 'Rock To
The Beat'. Worth a listen without no doubt.

Incidentally, Closer are not to be confused with old Herdest Cummings aka
THE Closer, last seen on, strangely enough, KMS. Gosh, it's just a whirl of
coincidence, innit?
