Re: [313] napster article in NY times.

2000-05-31 Thread tristan watkins
I just posted this to the technocrat message board
regarding this article. Curious to know your
thoughts... I know this is a contentious issue, and
may have been discussed on 313 while I was off-list.
If so, please disregard. The article definitely offers
an interesting perspective from an established
musician.

What about vinyl? Vinyl is as strong, if not stronger
than ever in the dance music community, almost
entirely unaffected by mp3 due to limited pressings
and the need (or at least the preference if you're a
stickler) for vinyl to DJ well.

Vinyl should grow in popularity, if anything due to
increased opportunity to listen before purchasing.

But... I still think artists should have the
opportunity to decide if they want their music freely
distributed on the internet. This is why I've started
encoding my music in only low quality Real Audio until
it (hopefully) gets released. At that point, I may as
well encode in mp3, because anyone else could do it
anyway. My point is, I fail to see how Napster helps
unreleased artists make a living from their work,
although it clearly opens the door to new audiences,
taking some of the leg work out of promotion. I would
be interested to know how many, if any artists have
been offered record (ie vinyl pressing) deals for
underground dance music, exclusively based on Napster,
or mp3 site hype. My bet is that there would be very
few.

Having just wrote this, I realize there are a gifted
few that can match a vinyl DJ with CDs, but there are
very few, and most respectable DJs won't use CDs
unless they can't find the tracks they're looking for
unless availbe on vinyl. I'm writing this little
disclaimer because I was quite impressed by Carl Meier
(sp?), and I found out @ DEMF that he spun on nothing
but CDs when he played in Iowa City. A very nice job
indeed. For the record, I started out spinning CDs,
and now almost never touch my Denons.

DEMF afterblindinglight

2000-05-31 Thread Otto Koppius
(because afterglow just doesn't do it justice)

Have you ever gotten shivers down your spine, just from reading a
webpage or email? I just did, reading all the reports and articles on
the truly landmark event that was DEMF.

Even though I could only make it for Saturday (had to fly back to the
Netherlands on Sunday), DEMF was everything I hoped for yet dared not
expect. The image that says it all really is standing on top of the
stairs at the main stage around 11pm during Stacey Pullen's set, looking
down and seeing thousands and thousands of people going ballistic to a
Detroit DJ, in Detroit. They say that prophets are never revered on
their home turf. Well, you can scratch that one now.

As someone (HP?) said to me later that night:
"Dammit man, we pulled it off!".

And even though neither of us were directly involved with the
organization of the festival, he was right. Yes, everyone from Carl
Craig and Pop Culture Media down to all the volunteers deserve huge,
huge respect for having the guts to organize such a festival and making
it work, but it also couldn't have happened without the people worldwide
that have supported this scene. DEMF was a tribute to all of you.

Because this is not a scene that has been created by big corporate
marketing efforts, this is a scene created and sustained by individuals.
Created by every single person that organizes a party, hosts a
radioshow, makes music, DJs, runs a label, writes for magazines and
websites or buys the records.

This weekend it all came together, showing everyone what all of us all
over the world have created the past 15 years. I don't think that there
is anyone who is involved in the scene in any way and came to DEMF, that
did not feel a little bit proud when seeing so many people of such
diversity having such a great time.

Those that couldn't make it can get some impression from the posts and
articles, the archived webcasts, but really, they have to see it for
themselves next year. There's no other way to fully experience what
happened last weekend. I know I will be there next year. No matter what.

A huge thank you to what I've almost come to think of as 'the 313
family' for making us Dutchies (Hans, Klaas-Jan, Pieter and myself)
again feel so extremely welcome. In random order and sincere apologies
to those I've missed: Steve (next time I'll bring records), John+Annick
from Belgium (more technotourists!), BMG, Carlos, Bill (what was the
third track of your liveset? loved it!), Mike, Nelson, Gerald, Rob
(who's probably sleeping for 48 hours straight right now), Holly, Diana,
Meighen, TP (we *will* get you over to our shores this summer!),
Tristan, Ryan and the rest of the Iowa crew, Tom, Ian&Linda (loved the
bbq! great idea! *grin*), Phred, Emanuel, Mark, John&Karie, Nate, Linda
G, Sean, Dustin, Ed Luna (very pleasant surprise!), Dave, Aaron, Omar,
Ken and Karl (sorry I missed you Iz!), Tamara, MM, Cornelius, Heath
(check out his new EPs on VMax and KMS068, v. v. nice), Adam, Nicola,
Derek 'Energy' Plaslaiko, Keith, Dan Sicko, Dan Bell, Chuck, Jon Layne
(get in touch re: gigs), Brian, Paris the Wig-Fu :) and finally a very
special thanks to Kelli for providing hospitality far above and beyond
the call of duty.

2000-05-31 Thread The Deliverator
'lo all,

I'm suprised that no one has mentioned the 430 west after hours. Seeing Octave
One do a live p.a. was very very nice.
The music there was fabu all night, but for some reason it was only us folk
from kleveland who were dancingoh well.

The rest of the festival was fabulous (but I was only there for 1.5 days.)
Hightlights were def. d wynn, t.p., stacey pullen (rocked the house!,) the 15
minutes of DBX that I actually got to see, meeting hawtin, and grooving with
the 430 west crew. Not to mention all the hard to find (shrinkwrapped!) +8
vinyl the m-nus guys were selling- woo hoo!

Having schedule changes posted would have really helped. I was jamming to what
turned out to be dbx, but no one around seemed to know who it was at the time.
Oh well, I still enjoyed the hell out of myself anyway :-).

I got interviewed by some people doing a documentary, and when asked about what
i thought of the festival, I said something along the lines of "It's about time
the city recognized this worldwide phenomena- it all started here."

the whole thing really made this detroit native a little emotional

Yeah, HTFR has a tendency to salt their prices "a bit" if a record was a
huge anthem back in the days. Like, £100 for that record, ehh...

Is there a golden autograph or sumtin' ;) It's not that RARE is it?

DEMF Thoughts

2000-05-31 Thread John Bush
Before sifting through the 600 (!) messages currently in my Inbox since last
Thursday, I thought I'd type in all my impressions to add to the atmosphere
for everyone, whether you were there and can relate or weren't and want to
know. First off, there are absolutely no doubts in my mind, this was an
*incredible* festival. All those high expectations I carried in with me
were met and surpassed on an almost hourly basis... ;) The music was
excellent and the vibes were simply incredible ('cept for the completely
misguided violent moshing by a couple of Slayer fans during Richie Hawtin's
set). All this positivity and love were such a vivid counterpoint to last
year's Woodstock (various fires, assaults, etc.)

Even more than that though -- the diversity!! I remember hearing Carl
really wanted a broad range of people showing up, and he certainly got it.
Rave kids, indie-rockers, hip-hop headz, daytripping families, middle-aged
couples, old guys all *over* the place -- it was *so* great to see the range
of people getting exposed to pure Detroit techno in the right environment.
I think we *really* showed Detroit what techno's all about. For once, it
wasn't about teens or drugs or illegal venues or shady promoters (the usual
I-Team Special Reports) -- it was *all* about the music and the culture.
Detroiters got to see the music in an almost completely unfiltered setting,
and I hope it inspires everyone that was there (it definitely inspired a few
people I didn't expect to be too moved...)

I don't know what else to say... I saw *so* many great sets: Aril Brikha,
Adult, Ectomorph, Slum Village, the Roots, Mike Clark, Theorem, Fanon
Flowers, Godfather, DJ Assault, Lauren Flax, Shake, and of course,
Saunderson/Rolando/May/Hawtin to end things on the highest note possible.
It was such a sea of humanity by Derrick's set, and just about everyone had
their hands in the air...

Lasting Impressions:

Theo Parrish taking us back to the *original* Loft days with his disco/funk
set at the Planet E afterparty... Easily my Festival highlight, and a great
thing to see since I'd missed Saturday's events.

That crazy old guy dancing and pumping his fists to Theorem (!) on Monday
afternoon...

The middle-aged black couple in front of me yelling and screaming in
recognition when Derrick dropped "No UFO's"...

One breakdancing circle I saw during Shake -- there was a whitebread father
there with his preschool-age daughter right in the circle. Her face was all
lit up at the moves, and everyone was taking special care to see she had a
good time...

And speaking of wide smiles, how about BVL getting his props on the main
stage after Richie's set?... ;)

Does anyone else get the feeling that we're going to see a *lot* more people
at events from now on, plus a big jump in record sales?...

.John.

2000-05-31 Thread Tom Churchill
This should be an easy one - it's an electro track, with the lyrics: 'I turn
you on, my automatic freak, inside your mechanism, every night'. It also has
a string line very reminiscent of Ron Trent's 'Altered States'...

Anyone know the track I mean?

Cheers,

PS: DEMF sounded amazing, I'll be there next year for sure!

Europe? shit taste in music? well which continent was it ignored techno for
over a decade? Europe produces a wealth of shit music...granted, so does
America. But it was the interest of europeans which gave a platform to many
of Detroit's artists during the late eighties and early nineties.

Whatever you think of the work on Warp, Disko B, Hybrid, F-Communications,
Soma, Djax, etc. (need I go on...) don't be stupid enough to think that the
music tastes of hundreds of millions of people can be summed up by what
you've read in magazines (because if you have been here, you've obviously
been going to the wrong places). That is the real mark of a pedestrian music
consumer...

they only booked people that move things forward. to be honest, from what i
understand there was a process to getting booked that EVERYONE had to

it is not that big of a deal. the whole original reply to alans statement
really didn't bother me that much because he was off on a lot of things. it
is really none of my business anyway. that is why i made 1 comment to play
devils advocate. anyway, there are plent of more festivals to go. i hope that
one day Paul Okenfold doesn't play in the future. say, after carl gets sick
of doing the festival and some chump who just happens to be running a hot
club at the time takes over and books a bunch of trance dj's. that would be
real shitty!

Whilst reading each one makes me wish I'd been there even more (like so many
other folks - next year!), it's been a pleasure to experience the festival
through your accounts, so thanks for that. Actually... that kinda sounds all
past tense doesn't it? As if you guys are gonna shut up so soon

Hope to meet some of you guys at a future DEMF!

I was told by a very reliable source earlier this year that Ian Pooley had
left V2 in its massive downsizing operation but apparently it isn't so. He
has a new album, Since Then, due out via V2 in August (this is more or less
the international date) which I'm told is better than the last one. There
will be a vinyl single release, 900 Degrees, soon.

Out of everything he's done, I like his Quiet Daze track on Time: Space
best. It will be interesting to hear the new record.

thoughts after the DEMF [LONG]

2000-05-31 Thread Bill VanLoo
Well, the long-awaited weekend is over, and it's time for decompression.
This is going to be long...

I've been looking forward to this event since last December, when it was
announced in Real Detroit (a weekly city paper here in Detroit) that a
free electronic music festival was going to take place during Memorial
Day weekend. I saved that issue, thinking that it would be a great piece
of memorabilia if I ended up playing by some miracle, and a cool piece
of history regardless.

Well, thanks in large part to Rob Theakston from Planet E, I did end up
playing. I can't thank Rob enough, since it was he who STRONGLY
encouraged me to submit a demo. I think his exact words were something
along the lines of "DO WHATEVER IT TAKES". I locked myself in my home
studio for 3 days recording, tweaking, and recording some more. That was
in February. About 6 weeks ago, I got the call saying that I was in the
festival. I think I almost fainted.

Friday, May 26 was the day before the festival started. I spent a few
hours doing final tweaks to my live set, then ran around doing errands.
I headed to Hart Plaza and worked on helping set things up for about an
hour. I was about to start helping hang black plastic in the Underground
stage area when I saw a familiar Dutchman. I met up with Klaas, Hans,
and Otto, the true techno tourists, was introduced to their friend
Peter, and we all piled into my car and headed to Record Time. Record
Time was great, I met lots more (313) listmembers (Holly, Diana Detroit,
Horsepower, Mike Taylor, Nova, and others I can't quite remember...). We
chilled, shopped, and took geeky record-store pictures.

I remember asking a guy behind the counter who was wearing a Sound
Signature shirt when the new Theo Parrish double pack was coming out.
Then, once I got outside, I found out it was Theo himself. I ran back in
and he found me a copy of the new Sound Signature double-pack on white
label, which I gladly purchased. It's some next-level material - it
should be out in June or July.

After a nice barbecue at Ian Malbon and Linda Swanson's, I caught back
up with the (313) posse at Fishbone's, ate a little, talked a lot, and
finally headed home to pack my gear up and get ready for the next day.

Saturday, May 27 - the first day of the festival. My set was scheduled
for 4:00PM on the Underground stage, so I got there early, loaded gear
in, and waited. I caught Jason Hogans's set at 2:00PM, which was great.
I never knew Jason was an MC as well as a talented producer, but there
he was dropping rhymes. He didn't play much new material, but he
delivered 2 new hip-hop tracks and all 5 tracks off his Planet E relase
plus a little new stuff. It was very well done. I chilled and listened
to Scott Zacharias's set from 3-4, and then it was time for my live set.

I felt great playing - the crowd started off at a decent size, then
every time I looked up it kept getting bigger. Towards the end of the
set, I think the room was almost entirely full! I ended up playing all 8
tracks I'd sequenced, finishing with the track that should be coming out
on THX (http://th.m-nus.com). I should have audio up on chromedecay
(http://www.chromedecay.org) in a few days if all goes well.

After my set, my mind was still pretty much blown. I listened to
Recloose getting busy as I tore my gear down, then went back to the
artist hospitality tent and chilled while Tikiman and the Hardwax crew
played on the main stage. I have to say, there's not much that compares
to the feeling of having played the biggest gig of your life, then
having a cold beer and a sandwich while one of your favorite musical
groups plays 30 feet behind you. It was really just about perfect.

The rest of Saturday night is kind of a blur. I caught part of Stacey
Pullen's set and almost all of Kenny Larkin's live/DJ set. Kenny's new
live material sounded great, but it seemed like the crowd wasn't up for
it so he switched gears and played other people's more uptempo stuff. I
can't wait to hear his new record.

Saturday night was the 7th city party. Suffice it to say that it was
great, a perfect chill vibe, and John Tejada was the sleeper sensation
of the evening. He just kept dropping jewel after jewel, and it all
sounded *so* tight on their sound system.

Sunday, May 28 - day two. I took this as my recovery day, showing up to
the festival about 7:30PM. I timed it so I was in time for Slum Village,
who played a solid set. Their new stuff (especially the long-awaited
Fantastic vol. 2) should be great. Then the Roots stepped up and rocked
it for almost 2 hours. I enjoyed their set; Dice Raw made a surprise
appearance, Scratch (the human turntablist) was off the hook, and Black
Thought ripped it. ?uestlove...well, that man is amazing, flat out. He
rocked a drum solo that made a beat junkie like myself just beg for
more...starting off slow, then building to razor-sharp drum-n-bass
breaks, all live, all on a trap kit. Amazing. Black Thought's "YEW GUYS
WERE A KICK-ASS AUDIENCE

to check out Designer Music Vol.1 yet or a Common Factor White Label, but
this new Agent X is D O P E !!!

Signing off... To everyone's relief I'm sure.

Re: [313] DEMF-Electronic FAMILY REUNION!!!!

2000-05-31 Thread Mxyzptlk
I was THERE and I wish I was there *again* more and more each day. You hate
to keep crapping on about it (especially because you know there are those
who weren't able to come), but it's like...a spiritual thing. There was a
real sense of connection between ALL kinds/ages/races of people. It was an
insanely good thing. I've been a native of the Detroit metro area all of my
life and I've often defended the city from the slagging it gets (and,
admittedly, often deserves), but I have to say that I was ~proud~ to be from
this area and consider myself blessed to be able to have something like this
in a place/time I can access. My work schedule usually puts me out of bed
near 4am, so (especially at my age :-) most of the great music which is in
my area is ironically out of my reach. I cannot thank Carl and all of the
folks who made this thing possible enough. My only regret is that I didn't
meet up with more listpeople while I was there. I see from some of the
pictures that I was looking at a few of you for 3 days without knowing who
you were. Wish there was some kind of 313 "gang sign" :-)

The motor stage

2000-05-31 Thread Nathan John de Yonker
this must be said...

The scenery at the Motor stage was awesome! Not only did the RenCen tower
over it from the front, but if you were up on those stairs looking at it
from the side and above, it looked like BEACH MTV!! haha!

hm... think about how much better mtv would be if d. wynn spun on the
grind (and they let him play what he wanted)

2000-05-31 Thread Phonopsia
Bill,

Is there any chance we will get an archive of your set?

I couldn't tear myself away from Mike Clark forever, although the band
members didn't do nearly as much for me as the drummer who played with Minx.
That was phenomenal on-the-fly chemistry. And watching Minx laughing because
she was having so much fun with the drummer was great. I've never seen DJs
having as much fun as Minx on Friday or Derrick "Broken Seal" Plasaiko on
Sunday (not to mention Derrick in the crowd the whole time :> ). Anyway, I
had to check out Scion and Tikiman, which was quite a treat. I also stopped
by the Motor stage for a taste of Mike Grant and D Wynn along the way. This
was completely overwhelming. By the time I made it over for the beginning of
Theo Parrish's set I was very ready to stay put in one place. I didn't even
know where the undergound stage was at that point. You can't see everything
after all. I think the first hour and a half of his set (before he started
playing a lot of house), was one of the most beautiful things I've ever
heard. I don't think I've ever heard anyone mix non-sequenced music
continuously for that long as seemlessly as he did. It was mind-blowing.
Probably my favorite part of the show, right there with the Roots finale.

Hey, I've got a cousin named MAURIZIO who's looking for a good four
POLE filter that can add some SUBSTANCE to his mixes.

sorry. couldn't resist :]

On the demf tip:
everything rocked. wish i could have seen every stage at once. totally
surprised by the massive turnout- blew away every hart plaza event i've
ever seen. as long-time ann arborite, never realized how many local
acquaintences actually had half a clue about the electronic music scene.
