short review of KDJ 026
KDJ 026 Andres 'untitled' (2x12") Non-descript label (unlike previous Andres or KDJ releases) with no song titles, in plain white sleeve. Overall, a very satisfying release... with improved production and song writing, following on from the three previous 12"s on KDJ. SIDE A 1. Sweet cut-up, with a house rhythm... featuring pitched-up male vocals that sound like a cross between falsetto Smokey Robinson and a chipmunk. :) 2. Another 4-on-the-floor cut-up, with nice flute samples and female vocal samples. SIDE B 1. A cut-up of 'Friday Night' by Debbie Welch and Norma Jean Bell (out on Pandamonium last year). Hip Hop tempo, with hard hitting kicks. 2. Smooth house track, with nice piano samples, and chord progression similar to '313 Love' (off KDJ 20). SIDE C 1. Stepping away from previous KDJ releases this is an up-tempo breakbeat track ('Reality'-style) with a Latin flavour. Featuring a live-sounding bongo intro. Absolutely killer! 2. Classic KDJ house-style, with a deep piano riff and saxophone samples. SIDE D 1. Another Latin-flavour breakbeat track with Spanish vocal and guitar samples. 2. Latin percussion and guitar samples feature on this uptempo breakbeat track. The pitched-up vocal sample sounds like a cross between Motown and Ofra Haza (of 'Paid in Full' fame). A highly recommended release (probably my fav. double pack for the year), and a good jumping-on point for folks unfamiliar with the KDJ label. You might want to think about playing Sides A & D at -8% though... then again maybe you might not. I'm betting that Andres' sampler doesn't have a 'time stretch' function. :) cheers ~Askew **warning: Do not borrow your partners' credit card/money to buy this record... they will claim it for themselves! RE: How come certain trends on 313 are so easy to follow while others are just ignored, because you have 15-20 "trendy" people on this list that participate in discussion on a regular bases, these people tend to favor certain 313 artist more then they do others. (this comment is not directed at anyone in particular) Not directed at anyone in particular, EXCEPT those 15-20 "trendy" people, right? why I ask this is because I know that there are more people on this list that get packages from Submerge or stumbled on certain pre-released material but it is hardly ever discussed. Lets take Claude Young for example, when's the last time you've seen his name mentioned on on this list? Er, he's coming to Minneapolis...remember? Or did you also choose not to mention anything about his work when his name came up? I think this just speaks volumes for the quality of this list, and job the list administrator is doing maintaining it. Anyone got any deep philosophical theories they want to put forth? Wait! I got an idea!!! How bout we organize a Global Underground Network that will eventually take over the United Nations and overthrow the mainstream music media? stephen. It's not deep and it's not a philosophical theory just the plain truth. Remember: 1) the list administrator does not maintain the list, "313 content is not moderated and never will be" that's from the first page of the 313 site, 2) regarding your smarmy comment "Wait! I got an idea!!! How bout we organize a Global Underground Network that will eventually take over the United Nations and overthrow the mainstream music media" again from the 313 site "Complaining about trash in our streets only makes sense if you have made an effort to pick that trash up." Now, Stephen, ask yourself what you're doing besides complaining about "trendy" people and your implication of their monopoly over the topics? Fred PS actions speak louder than words. Well, how is the new Claude Young record, since you bring it up? I know I really enjoy the Pattern buffer record he put out recently on DJAX... In general, I would say just because certain artists get discussed more often doesn't mean others aren't appreciated as well. I really don't see how the lack of discussion of promo material hurts the list. Pre released material eventually gets released to the public but it doesn't get discussed on the 313-list because its not a 'Shake' record or a 'KDJ' record, or a Limited Edition 'Jeff Mills' record. self promotion -- new track on mp3.com
http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher New track "Solstice Beat" -- conceived originally as a hip hop beat it gradually goes through a complete rhythmic deconstruction. 90 bpm, mixed dubwise live -- you can hear the crackle when I hit the mutes on my mixer. For the trainspotters amongst you -- Every sound in this track was computer generated primarily using the Vaz Modular software synth. A few hand-me-down drum samples from the internet were used, but there were no pre-recorded loops at all. The bit that sounds like a 12 string guitar plucking single notes is made just from massively processed sawtooth waves. The sweeping 'jet' sound comes from a delay with a flanger in the feedback path. The drums came from single hit samples, either hand-assembled in Sound Forge, or triggered in Vaz Modular. The little drum rolls comes from occasionally adding a fast LFO square wave to the sample trigger. I played with randomizing the re-triggering, so that you never hear the same drum pattern twice. Then I cut loops out of about 5 minutes or random mayhem. The bassline that comes in a few minutes in is made from a thick drone sound sampled and replayed using granular synthesis. It's then time stretched in Acid to where the sound breaks up, and then further effects added to smooth it out. It's called Solstice Beat because that's when I started making the track. kent williams -- [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yeah second that -- Sean's been spreading the promos on that for almost a year. Very nice, deep tracks. In mood (not in terms of sounds) it has the same sort of melancholy that Carl Craig's 'Landcruising' has. And reflecting Sean's love for driving and listening to CDs it's great road trip music. Is this out? I have the promo and I'm going to buy the release as well. You should as well -- Trevor needs new shoes!
Disco identificazione...
Once again from the endless treasure island, Deephouse-pages: http://www.biostat.wisc.edu/~rose/house/mixes12.htm -I'm lookin for track IDs in Frankie Knuckles-1980's WBMX mix (mix number 406.): The first starts approx. 23:00, it's a Chicago house track with vocals going "You can't hide, you can't hide from yourself..." backed with heavy 909 percussion. The second track comes in 27:00, it's an 80's disco-tune with smooth (and horny) female vocals. Third track comes right after that, around 32:15. Backed with classic, luscious slap-bass, percussion and smooth synth chords... The last track comes in 37:00 with arpeggiated synth bass-line, and it has a nice female vox kinda like Donna Summer. Some extremely classy Patrick Cowley-like effects in the end, analogue sweeps... Any help appreciated, Thanks! Proffit Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

havent heard stranger tracks in a long time, he manages to make them sound warm and soulful and spooky and surreal at the same time; i also really like the kind of empty feel of it, it reminds me of the last metro area... very-late-night-music. overall his last ep on kdj sounded more elaborated, this one seems more sketchy to me, still love it though. my problem with such tracks, as with those of th parrish, is that the reasons why i love them, namely their distinct feel and atmosfear, make them so difficult for me to mix. theres always going to be a break which you have to stage(?) really well... every once in a while when i do a mix with my friends force tracks, classic, some perlon and playhouse etc i feel like i could do it without hands and brains ;-) one more thing: im desperately looking for that 3chairs double (3ch-I), small blck church (kdj5) and what do you see (kdj8). anyone knows where i could get them or is willing to sell/exchange? among others i could offer 3chairs-II, the godson II (kdj22) and imo a real gem, urban tribe d-2000 (mowax94) armin

Mission 6277-whatta hell?
I checked the Axis site. There was a Mars-icon and behind it was some-thing about "purpose of mission 6277". I think this is just fancy words describing the purpose of AXIS, not a new label called "Mission 6277", right? I ask this because it says in the mission statement: "to release compositions from unknown artists...", so I thought it would be fun to try offer him some tracks, knowing that Axis hasn't released anything from "outsiders" (wink wink!!! ;)... It doesn't matter whether the extortionate price (22 ukp) is due to Axis, the distributor or the retailer. The fact is that someone is taking the piss, and there is no way I'm going to shell out for a record that I know full well should cost an absolute maximum of 15 ukp. It's also kind of up to Mills as the label manager to ensure that his fans can get hold of his records at a reasonable price - he does have a certain amount of power over the distributors he sells to and surely he can object to their pricing? As Sean said, someone somewhere along the chain is taking the piss - personally I doubt it's Mills but then he will be benefitting from it, and if anyone can put it right it's him. Just my $0.02... Thank you for pointing that out. H - I was very off the mark when I thought it may relate to the discussion topic. What's happened is you've paid full exclusive import price for a record that's due for release next week here anyway at normal price ie.£13/14 obviously this has nothing to do with mr mills but more to do with greedy distributors not telling shops of it's imminent release and lazy shop owners not doing their job. we could of got copies ourselves here at the same price but how many people are gonna pay that kinda money in this day and age just to get a record a week early. our advice...take it back for a full refund and buy from innercity next week for a tenner less! paul innercity www.innercity.co.uk - Original Message - From: Tom Lawton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: 313 Detroit Techno Mailing List <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Thursday, July 06, 2000 10:33 PM Subject: [313] Suprised? The recent Luomo releases on Force Tracks and the Farben releases on Klang have given the minimal house sound a push in a deep and interesting direction. Beautiful techno sounds with a shuffling house vibe. Fantastic stuff. Cheers Rol Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Dido Armstrong is a UK singer (and sister of Faithless' Rollo!) and Stan samples her love ballad Thank You. The original version can be found on Dido's (mellow) No Angel LP, as well as on the soundtrack to the Gwyneth Paltrow flick Sliding Doors. The track was produced by Mark The 45 King (Queen Latifah in her hip-hop heyday, Jay-Z's Hard Knock Life). Claude Young was raving about the album when he was here too and saying how he remembers Eminem from his radio days (he also raved about Common's new album, which is ace for different reasons). >yeah! Re: [313] Suprised? I was!
dont be so quick to balme Jeff for the final cost of his records. he has no control over what price a record shop chooses to sell his records for. heres a simplistic breakdown of how records are marked up before they arrive in our hands; the record label pays to have the records pressed (essentially "buying" them from the pressing plant) then they are sold to the distributor at a markup from the pressing cost. the distributors then sells them directly to the shops (marked up again). the shop then puts a price tag on the jacket with yet another markup factored in. so every time a record exchanges hands in its swim upstream it's "value" is increased. but once we, the consumers, get our hands on it and take it out of the shop its' vlaue reverts back to it's original cost (it's now a "used" record :^) I doubt that distributors would stand for such a huge cost difference when purchasing this record from the record company so the huge markup must've happened somewhere else in the chain? sean Tom Lawton wrote: > I just got hold of a copy of Axis 20 today, even forking out the very > ridiculous price of 22ukp for it.
