Thank you Diana!

I am really hanging out for the new singles Big Onion and (my fave title so
far) Dr Bootygrabber.

Incidentally, I asked Andy Van of Madison Avenue (who I've known for years
here in Melbourne) what he made of Sandwiches breaking through (kinda
parallels with his own career) and he said: "For the last 20 years Detroit
has made some of the best underground techno and house and they've made no
money on it, so great, let's see them having lots of money and buying better
studios and mixdowns and all that sort of stuff. That's a good thing!"

Currently she's touring with the Architectura show and that has had a long
tour schedule so I doubt she's currently working on anything, but of course
I could be wrong.
BTW I saw that show and was disappointed with the live music..."found sound"
experiments sound great when you're up late around 3 or 4 am and alone
f*cking around with effects but when you listen to someone else do it it's
daft. The "found sound" guy who is doing the vol 5 of Architectura was utter
poo live...boring boring boring. The architecture slides and video
installments were great though...bought the video and the Panacea CD. Wish
that they used video during the live music parts instead of slides. The
music was stagnant and it didn't help that they used slides instead of video
to show the architecture (which was full of implied movement and life). And
I still don't know why electronic music and architecture seems to go hand in
hand...which was what the whole presentation was supposed to address. Lots
of people left halfway through. I stuck it out but I've gotten more out of
the video I purchased than the entire live presentation.

Sean came to Iowa City to spin last year and dropped me a copy of this.
It is a remarkably smooth and deep exploration of techno. which has some
bumping tracks, but also some pieces that are incredible 4 am chill
material.

Having grown up with techno in Detroit, this record has the traits of a
classic jazzy techno track -- Kevin Saunderson comes to mind more than,
say, Jeff Mills. But Allegory and Metaphor is beyond that a very personal
work. It really does what art is supposed to -- express what is unique
about Sean as an artist, instead of striving merely to conform to
conventions

of the form.

I personally want this record to be a big success, if for no other reason
than to make it possible for Sean to give more of his time to music,
because

with "Allegory and Metaphor" he's only just gotten started.

I was in a local used clothing shop with a friend yesterday afternoon and
they were playing some lovely, almost baroque techno. I asked what it was
and the cashier tells me "the new Sean Deason". After reading so much about
it here I was glad to finally get a "glimpse" of it. Will be buying it,
definitely.

On another note: NYC 313'ers should get over to Kim's Underground as they've
got a pile of
Dan Curtin's "Pregenesis" CD on sale in their used bin (though the CD's are
new)very cheap. It's highly recommended. I've been digging it nonstop.

Not anything of a documentary really, but worth a look is the British "HUMAN
TRAFFIC" - I thought it did a damn fine job actually capturing the upside and
downside, the charms as well as the idiocy of a fully amped clubber/raver's
weekend . I think the catchphrase would be something like "What Trainspotting
is to heroin, Human Traffic is to Ecstacy" How did this film go over in the
UK, I wonder? No proper releases here that I know of, but your local on-the
ball video parlor might have an import VHS.

I think in the US Jive is distributed by BMG, not here in Australia.

The track is whimsical and fun, I see it as not unlike Green Velvet's stuff,
less dark maybe.

I think the overground/underground issue is very complex - that was my
point. It was clearcut in the case of Jaguar but it is not always like that.

RE: [313] belgium next week

2000-08-07 Thread Jan Claeyssens

Well you can start by checking www.amphion.be were
most belgian clubs are present. And if you're looking for clubs with a
chicago/detroit framework of music check FUSE and FOOD or eventually Café
d'Anvers.

I am going off to belgium next week. Anyone got some hot tips on
good
clubs in Antwerp & Brussels
where they're playing stuff like electro, the hague trax, disco,
garage,
detroit/chicago stuff?

Did they play them in '96? Cause I have a Pennington / Rolando live mix that
has some raw tracks I can't identify...

i get the 313-digest, so excuse me if this has come up already. did
derrick
ever show up at guernica in nyc last night? i left sometime after
2am ...
had to get up for work today. i heard a bunch of different stories
about
why he was late ...

hearing dj jes spin for 5 hours (he was there to "open" for mr. may)
was
actually alot of fun. it took him awhile to get the crowd going,
but the
floor was filled from about 11:30 (he filled the floor by dropping a
bunch
of tracks off of his own fresca label) until i left. he dropped c.
craig's
"throw", an old derrick may track, a samuel sessions track, but
mostly TONS
of deep bassy filtered chicago house (old and new). great music,
seamless
mixing. the crowd was there for the music (the detroit techno
parties
always seem to attract the best crowds in nyc).

One that comes to mind is that BBC-one, the final episode in that
"Rock'N'Roll" TV-series documentary (don't remember the name), where May

"Dancing in the Street" was the name of that one. The "chapter" focusing
James Brown/funk/pfunk was also really good for an Aussie white(ish)boy like
me who knew not an awful lot about the history of the music.

One that comes to mind is that BBC-one, the final episode in that
"Rock'N'Roll" TV-series documentary (don't remember the name), where May
talked, Knuckles gave comments, Bambaataa explained some history etc.
Basically going from Hip Hop thru House to Techno, it was a decent (if
short) "documentary".

But one pioneering one was a finnish documentary film called "House that
Jack built" (or something like that;)), concentrating entirely on Techno (or
"TEKNO" as it was the term in those days). It was made in 1991-92, and had
an early interview with LFO in their home studio.
It tried to explain terms such as "hardcore", "bleeb", "rave" and such, and
had some pseudo-philosophical B.S. about the whole "idea" of techno and
machines. And it was rather Europe-centered, no U.S. scene was featured. If
you diss all that it was actually quite nice film, and to defend it I must
say there was at least some nice COMMENTS about Detroit techno ("purest
techno there is"). Too bad the film was all in finnish language!

I have the video - I did an interview with the producer. It's got Moby in
it, say no more. In 25 words or less? It's about rave culture from a US
mainstream perspective. That's all you need to know! There will be a DVD
with extra info on it.
