Re: [313] Radio Helsinki & I-F
Hi, I sure hope I-F will rock the Finland parties as he did back in Geneva last Saturday; you'll witness one of the greatest sets ever... Warmed up perfectly by Miss Kitten who did a devine set, the cats of Geneva experienced the most eclectic disco-electro-garage set ever: I-F did a five hour set including three encores without any downfalls. At 8:00 am, the people still refused to stop dancing and return home... But they where right; what can you possibly find at home that's better then I-F enjoying the music? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Anyway, have a great time there in Finland, I really hope I-F will give you what you deserve. Re: [313] mills vs .ca
I honestly find difficult imagine him asking 100k for a gig as well as asking 15k for a melbourne club. (I've been in australia and Rolando played in Sydney in a 600 people venue) OK, 100K was crazy speculation, but the figures that I was quoting was Australian dollars, on US, so depending on the conversion rate at the time, his asking price could appproach AU$15K. Also keep in mind that the promoters who brought him to Sydney in April are in a position to give Mills this kind of money anyhow. I'll just shut from now on out. d. _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. >I honestly find difficult imagine him asking 100k for a gig as well >as asking 15k for a melbourne club. (I've been in australia and >Rolando played in Sydney in a 600 people venue) Sydney has a very small techno scene relative to Melbourne, say. And it's winter here. So that underground gig, which was actually very well attended in the circumstances, is not typical. In Melbourne it was a bigger venue. Mills played 6000 here in Melbourne in April. What's more, he very kindly did phone interviews with a few select writers in advance, which would have taken up a day of his time. So I think such professionalism and courtesy should be rewarded. But honestly can we leave all this talk of booking to Mills, his agent/manager and the promoters. It's not really our business, unless this is a forum for promoters. The figures on this list were grossly exaggerated, I have no doubt. In fact the figures seem to be growing each time the speculation arises. It's kinda crazy. Heard any good records lately anyone? What is the new Alton Miller like??
Jeff Mills/Metropolis
Here's what NME say about the Jeff Mills Metropolis soundtrack - though I've always found using FSOL's "Accelorator" album has been a great score for it in the past! Does anyone have any idea which cut of the film Mills' score is for? BABY DIDDY JEFF MILLS, the legendary second wave Detroit techno DJ and former UNDERGROUND RESISTANCE member, has produced an updated soundtrack for the film 'METROPOLIS'. Following the controversial Queen soundtracked re-release in the '80s, Mills has produced a techno soundtrack to the classic 1926 Fritz Lang film. The original film, a startling Modernist parable, has a singular resonance with both Mills' and the original techno producers' futurist outlooks. As Mills explains, "It is our intention to re-introduce and educate the theories and ideology of Fritz Lang's 1926 masterpiece to the cyber youth of today. It seems fitting that this movie, the movie that shaped the young minds in the '20s, with its timeless message of solidarity and the romanticising of its Utopian dream world be reiterated and reintegrated at the beginning of our new century." This is the Mills' first album since the 'From The 21st', Japan-only album from the beginning of 1999. The album will be released through the stalwart Berlin-based techno label Tresor on CD only. A double vinyl version will be released through Mills' own Axis label. "Through the advances made in technology," Mills concludes, "and the acute sense of futurism felt by the youth of today, we hope to capture the minds and expand the imaginations of the ones that will soon form and forge our new world."

> > > >http://djsets.hyperreal.org/listen.cgi?listen_to=1998!DJMD.rm That is a great mix, thanks for posting that URL. HEaring that track "CCCP - Americans/Soviets" really takes me back, we used to play that as an opener at our High School dances in Kalamazoo! (back when there was still a cold war, ha). ALso Jamie Jupitor "computer power" never fails to move me. Does anyone else remember this Paul Hardcastle track called "Itz Weird" (has sample repeated "something's terribly wrong..." in a low voice...) from about the same era as the rest of these tracks. Not to be confused with Hardcastle's "Rainforest" or "Soundchaser". 98 WJLB used to play that track in their "after school mixes" (midafternoon half-hour mini-mixes) cheers -- Matt MacQueen <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> http://www.reverbmag.com archived radio shows --> http://macqueen.com/radio

I believe Dally in the Alley is this weekend in the Cass Corridor. Check it out, its awesome-its a great chance to get a sense of Detroit's community. Cloud 9 on Friday nights is a bit exciting too. *nerdy speaking* Theres an exhibit at the Detroit Instute of Arts called "Sultans" if you're into that history/Arabian nights/crazy rulers kinda thang. Also for the first time ever some of Michigan's galleries and museums are joining together to support video art installations. The museum here in A2 is featuring a ny artist. Id check local listings, like a Metrotimes, for that. And lets not forget Cirque de Soleil in 3D at the Henry Ford Museum. nerd out. diana From: Jim Grindle <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "'313@hyperreal.org'" <313@hyperreal.org> Subject: [313] what's happening in Detroit through Sunday? Re: track id?
Greetings, "If the wow-wow sound is like a 303 acidline and the whale song is a bassline that comes in about halfway through the track I would think that this was Acid Eiffel by Choice (Laurent Garnier) on Fragile. This track does have a two melodic bass parts that sound like whalesongs, as well as a lot of string pads. If the track in question had some acid line to it then this is my guess." It def. was not a 303 bass line, I'm guessing the "wow-wow" sounds were probably made by a Juno. But after hearing Acid Eiffel again, i'm gonna hunt it down. I'm trying to locate a copy of Killer Whale, but I don't see it on the UR catalog anywhere. I may have located a copy of the Warp Track as well..hopefully one of these will pan out. thanks again all jim

There is some type of dj collective that provides health insurance to its members. A friend of mine is a member. for my knowledge. some friends of mine get some info on booking him. We live in a little city in Switzerland so he ask for the venue's capacity. So I do belive booking him is big venue = big pay affair. something around 5k-10k should be a right figure. I honestly find difficult imagine him asking 100k for a gig as well as asking 15k for a melbourne club. I have been thinking about this too. Unfortunately the same thing happens to many artists - and I would think many Black musicians, as many would know. I was also thinking of Curtis Mayfield who was injured on stage. I think what makes this issue especially salient is the fact that in America there is no free public health care. I am very, very shocked at your health system and the fact that people (the mainstream) seem more concerned with the sleeping habits of their presidents than the fact that there is no health care access. In Australia, we have this, even though unfortunately American New Right values are seeping in. Here there is a two tiered system with public healthcare and private healthcare (private insurance required). There are often long delays for elective surgery with the former but at least if someone was in Shake's position they would be guaranteed some free care - maybe not physio but the basics, like access to specialists. I honestly don't know how you can address the problem specific to DJs/producers long-term but I imagine that you could set up some kind of collective to address it, pool resources for these kind of encounters. Like a superannuation fund. >sometime ago, an email was forwarded to us about shake, and about a >benefit being given in his honor. the text of this email got me to >thinking about politics, economics, and djs. > >instead of simply talking about the way things ARE--djs, though paid in >some instances are woefully undercovered as far as insurance goes--i'm >interested in talking about the way things could be, and how to get there. > >so here goeshow can dj's prevent "shake-like events" from happening in >the future? > >peace >lks > > > > >- >To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >
