New underground venue in Windsor...
I am looking for any feedback, questions or comments regarding a new underground house venue in Windsor. This is a weekly event which will be held every Thusday at a venue with a capacity of 1000-1500 people. The focus is on dedicating a weekly Thursday night to deep, underground music. I'm one of the residentsjust moved down to Windsor for school, however I'm coming from Toronto where I've been involved in many large-scale parties such as this. Every other week should see an international guest DJ, while at the same time, booking local talent as well. I work with Garage416 in Toronto whre our recent guests have been Tony Humphries, DJ Spen, Franky Feliciano, K.O.T and a good handful of others. This is the talent we'd like to bring to Windsor & Detroit as well as other underground acts & DJ's. Again, we need help in Detroit where much of the promotion will be concetrated across the river. Your feedback is greatly appreciated! Peace - Andrew Folkes PS check out garagehousemusic.com when you get a chance <: _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. HA My local techno outlet, yeah right, wouldent that be nice. No, I am afraid there are no local techno outlets in these parts, I suppose I could catch a train to Birmingham, but thats awful pricey (10.50 for a return) just to pick up a CD single. There is a local record shop, but they wouldent know what techno is if it smacked them upside the head, and the only CD's they carry are Gatecrasher, Cream, or Sundissential anthems compilation discs, or maybe the latest "Global Underground" mix from Oakenfold or Judge Jules or something like that. I know its bad to buy from one of these chain stores, but on the other hand, at least I would be buying it. I've had a copy of the tune, and a couple of the remixes in fact, for ages, I downloaded them from Napster (for a fan of underground music who lives in the country, Napster is like a best friend). So I was thinking as its UR and all, I should actually support them and buy the music. And I still will, I'm just gonna wait until I can find a copy with the video on it. But perhaps I'll hold off until next time I am in the city (whenever that might be...) and go to a proper record shop. Aaron
Fingers, Jack Trax, It
Hey Everybody, Recently picked up Mr Fingers Classics comp. on Black market. Liner notes say that Mr fingers works released on Jack trax in particular the rareish Amnesia LP were released without Larry's consent (and to think I have quite a few Jack trax releases!) Does anyone know if the 313 stuff released on Jack Trax in particular Model 500, Derrick and Blake were stolen in a similar fashion? Liner notes also talk of another Fingers comp. called "It" also released (I think around 1990)on Black market. Can anyone provide a track listing for this release? Re: [[313] Planet Mu night]
What does any of this have to do with 313?? "David Hampson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Just a few words about this night - I wrote more last night but I got hit by a virus and lost everything I was working on last night! If anyone has e-mailed me in the last 24 hours can you re-send! Anyhow, if anyone was expecting anything as big as Warp's do they would have been disappointed - the venue - up a rather scummy back street in East London - would be lucky to get 200 people in, though they had borrowed the same school disco lights as Warp did, and not splitting them between two rooms was reasonably impressive... First thing that happened when I got there was I got my money back! Having came a fair distance to the gig was a little annoying until the guy on the door told me there was no changes to the bill or anything, just that we were being given our money back (in exchange for e-mail addresses). So all of you who bitched about £8 for some crappy acts no one else has heard of lost out! Inside: school disco lights, no visuals. At the front Mike Paradinas and the guy that plays roadies in every movie ever with roadies - at least it looked like him - were peddling records from behind the turntables whilst on stage some long-haired hippy guy was playing guitar hunched over a console, though how he could see anything through that long hippy hair is anyone's guess. Anyhow, Mr Capitol K kind of seemed like he was hiding behind everything, hair included, and I guess it goes back to the Warp night and the need for some visuals since watching some guy hiding behind computers is not visually stimulating. At one point K slipped into straight indie rock which seemed kind of weird for the night but I guess as a hippy he has to do his own thang (or is it thing...). Straight up next was an unshaven guy who hid behind a laptop and played some nice tunes - at least I think he played some nice tunes - he could well have been typing up the Planet Mu tour accounts, which will probably explain why 4 tunes in Jega stood up, walked out the backdoor and never returned - obviously realising he was not going to get paid! Next up on the decks Mike Paradinas who seemed rather uncomfortable in the spotlight. He opened with a rather mad banging techno style tune on a white label album with "Caustic Window Remix LP" written on it - anyone heard anything about this yet!!?!! A lot of what he was playing was on his DAT player and it was the same style of drum and bass meets gabba that Aphex and Chris Cunningham played, but this time instead of A-Ha it was MC Hammer being mashed up with a track based around "Don't Touch This!" - I was once asked by a gullible friend if I wanted to see MC Hammer live to which I replied "I'd prefer to see him dead". After a while his discomfort got to him and he begged a pair of eager young scamps to take over - Hellfish and Producer who look like a white Maseo and Keith from the Prodigy without all that camp punk rock make up. These guys certainly won't be caught masturbating the tonearm - the menu is dock-off beats and plenty of 'em! Their style somehow manages to transcend banging techno but with more beats, hip hop with a lot more beats and drum and bass without the beats taken out, and what they lack in subtlety that more than make up for in intensity. What set them apart from the others was that they obviously were into the music and revelled in it, unlike Capitol K hiding behind his hippy hair, Jega behind his accounts and Mike P wishing he had something to hide behind! Once again it was disappointing how many people had came to front - only half a dozen people were dancing, though it may be that they were intimidated by some punk rock dude who looked like his butt plug had overheated but maybe he was just enjoying the music! It was a nice small midweek night out, and its hard to feel short-changed by a free gig! I almost wish I brought my MD along! sounds like two top recommenations on this record for me...! where do you mailorder records like this from in the US? Direct from Soma in Glasgow? As for Jack Me Off, I think its on the Soma 50 compilation though I don't have the record sleeves to hand. Re: [313] Funk D void in Detroit Tonight (Positive Education)
wow, don't even get me started on 'Positive Education' ... i'd be interested to find how well played it is around the states, for me this is one of my all time favourite records ... though the 'progressive house' version on the flipside is a bit iffy. there's a newer version out with Derrick Carter, Plastikman, Luke Slater remixes on vinyl and CD that's much better... of course i'm wondering when Slam are going to release another album, and when they're going to stop by in California! speaking of slam mixes, for those who haven't checked, theres a rather decent Slam mix tucked away on the Somarecords.com website, just pretend to fill in the online form and you get a free 25 minute mp3. Shorter Gene Farris mix there also. --Original Message-- From: "Paul Hudson" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: October 23, 2000 8:08:56 AM GMT Subject: Re: [313] Funk D void in Detroit Tonight > > I hear he's done a mix of e-dancer's 'banjo'... anyone heard this & can > provide comments? new mixtape i got!
hey all here is a little review of a new tape that i got from good ol' Fred. its good stuff. the first side is DJ Rush. it is actually quite a bit different from his "Relentless" tape. that one was banging acid techno. this is more of the chicago jacking style. starts off with a nice disco track that makes you think he is doing a house set and then BAM! is onto the chicago sound. a great mix with tons of songs that i havn't heard before. there isn't one disappointment on his side except for the 8 second streach of him just spinning a record backwards. it just overpowers the song that was playing and i really can't figure out why he was doing it. On the second side is DJ Rees Urban. don't know who this guy is, but i want to know after hearing his mix. it is a high energy mix and everything is clean. not as fast as jeff mills or claude young, but fast. i am hoping someone has some info on him. maybe it is another one of DJ Rush's many aliases?? the european booking numbers are the same for both rush and rees urban. But in chicago they put alot of dual mixes on tapes, so who know? who can provide me with info??? all in all a great mix tape. thanks for the tape Fred. all my e-mail addys got lost and it has been hard for me to get all my mail in from the list, so feel free to e-mail me in private. later jeff

Jaguar shopping
After going shopping (in the UK) for a copy of the CD single version of Jaguar (I was after that video) I can see why its not any higher in the charts, in fact its miraculous anyone knows anything about it at all. I went to MVC first, and was quickly dissapointed, I asked if they had it, and apparently they only stock the top 40 singles. So then I went to Virgin, thinking it should be easy to find there. I looked in the new releases section, and it was nowhere to be seen (but wasnt it released last week or something?). It wasnt in the chart section either. So I asked at the counter, and the staff guy went rummaging through the CD Singles section, and eventually produced one copy of it, apparantly the only one in the shop. And it didn't have the video on it, it had the original mix, the Jeff Mills mix, and a third one that I didn't recognize. Whether this is a good thing or bad thing, I dont really care to comment on. I would still like to have a look at that video though, I guess I'll just have to order it or something. Aaron

FWD: Re: [313] is rolando too good for ben sims because of D records?
actually it seems jaguar blew up after the huge magazine press UR got for standing its ground against Sony/BMG ... in the UK this got a LOT of press even in more mainstream magazines and even ended up getting reviewed in a few newspapers ... UR released the CD version on 430 with the express purpose of getting the 'real' jaguar out to as meany ears as possible, to kill the rip off.. the underground community seemed to be galvanised and united more than I have seen it in a while, and there was certainly a very big buzz going around. rather ironic that it took a lame trance rip-off that very few people have ever heard to bring UR into public focus! i for one like jaguar as much as I did when I first heard it, no more because of the hype, and no less because it is now popular. i'd hate to see people start to diss UR because they are no longer 'underground' enough ... if this is the only reason ppl liked them in the first place then they need to re-evaluate their priorities. I was spacing off about something like this at work the other day. Does anyone else think Jaguar would never have been as big as it is without all of Derrick May's publicity for Innovator in the year preceding its release - as though Innovator prepared a lot of people's ears for the early Detroit sound? I think a lot of people thought they were *supposed* to like Innovator from the moment they heard it, I mean how many people that are into techno music can say they don't like Strings of Life? Innovator made a lot of unlikely top ten lists a while after it was released, and it strikes me as odd that Jaguar is one of the first "stringy" (in the sense of older synth String of Life strings) songs I can remember hearing after Innovator was released. I remember when I first heard Derrick May records, I liked Strings of Life but I had a lot more trouble getting into his other tracks, probably because the Strings weren't so prominent, and the older sound was pretty foreign to my ears at that point. I'm really tired, not sure if that made sense... Don't get me wrong. I love Innovator and Jaguar, but the popularity of Jaguar is somewhat surprising to me. __ FREE Personalized Email at Mail.com Sign up at http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup

Conversely, is anyone else surprised Every Dog Has It's Day didn't get the same kind of lasting response or DJ play? Or rather, since I think it was a limited pressing, that it hasn't achieved more of a cult status? Or is it too soon for that? I would definitely put Every Dog Has It's Day in the same catgory. I saw Umek and Valentino (along with Recloose and Common Factor) on the weekend... Umek to me was fairly average. Another dj that flogs the four decks and mills sound, nothing i havent heard before. Valentino is just a glorified rave dj recloose and common factor on the other hand..
